The Girls Who Traipsed Through Time
Terra never really considered herself to be the adventurous sort, not really. She was more than happy to stay in her comfort zone. But that personal rule did not apply on Halloween, no sir. Which was why she was more than happy to be outside with her friend-slash-housemate, on the roof watching the moon, stars, and straggling trick-or-treaters.
Mirabelle on the other hand wasn't quite so reserved all the time. She liked going out and doing new things most of the time. But even so, sometimes it was nice to just hang out at home on the roof making fun of the passing stragglers and looking up at the moon. It was just past full, so it was still fairly bright outside, for being nighttime in the middle of the city.
"So, got any big plans for the weekend?" she asked with a grin, looking over at Terra. "Anything going on in your world besides work and me bugging the crap out of you to get you out of the house socially?" |
"No plans," Terra replied, leaning back a bit. "A couple books on my reading list finally came out, I was thinking about picking one up. Why?" She looked at her friend warily. "Where are you thinking of dragging me?"
Mira laughed and shook her head. "So suspicious! I wasn't thinking of dragging you anywhere. I was just wondering if you finally had an actual social life." She paused there. "Although I certainly wouldn't be averse to dragging you somewhere if it got you out more often."
"You know me," Terra replied, a bit sheepish. "I'm not usually one for going out. I don't like clubs or anything like that." She shrugged a bit, and then grinned. "But I totally have reason to be suspicious when you ask me that question, Mira."
Mira just laughed. "Yeah, I know. And you don't have to go out to ac club or anything to get out. You could go to that lovely little coffee shop down the street, the one where everyone's friendly and everyone talks to everyone? I bet you'd like that place. And you'd get social interaction other than me."
"I get social interaction other than you!" Terra protested. As an afterthought, though, she added, "At work..."
"That doesn't count," Mira replied primly. "That's work, not just fun relaxing time. You still have to mind yourself there. You need to go out for fun time, my girl."
"I have plenty of fun time," Terra replied. "Reading is fun time. Reading makes the stupid real people go away." She grinned a bit. "You know you agree."
"I do agree. But I also go out and go to places like the coffee shop so I actually see places other than work and the house." Mira shrugged. "I don't like being inside all the time, miss technology-is-my-best-friend."
"No, you're my best friend," Terra corrected teasingly. "Technology is just a really, really close second. And I left the house yesterday, remember? I went shopping."
"Ooooh, shopping," Mira teased. "I'm so impressed." She rolled her eyes and shook her head, looking up at the stars again. "Man, we need to go out on a camping trip again so we can really see the stars."
"Camping?" Terra repeated. She looked a bit wary. "Like, tents and sleeping bags in the wilderness camping?" She shook her head. "No thanks. I'm not good at camping."
Mira rolled her eyes. "Okay, not camping-camping. We could stay in a hotel out somewhere closer to nowhere so we don't have so much light pollution so we can properly see the stars."
"Better," Terra replied. Sighing a bit, she stretched and laid out more on the roof. It was a nice night. A little unseasonable for October, but nice.
Mira smiled a little and looked up at the sky. "At least it's still pretty," she said quietly, and then grinned when she saw a star shooting across the sky. "Make a wish."
Terra blinked and looked up just in time to see the shooting star. A wish half-formed in her head, but didn't form fast enough before the star vanished.
Mira just grinned and settled back against the roof.
"It's almost midnight. Couple more minutes to go. Then it won't be Halloween anymore and people will look at me funny for still having pumpkins." |
Terra snorted and waved a hand.
"Pumpkins are perfectly acceptable until December," she replied. "Let them look at you funny, there's nothing wrong with pumpkins." |
"That's what I keep saying. Been saying it since I was sixteen." Mira grinned lazily. "And most of the decorations are general fall decorations, rather than Halloween-specific."
Terra snickered.
"Exactly," she replied. |
Mira grinned again, settling in there. It was a good night. So far everything was beautiful, and there was only a minute until midnight.
"So, I trust you had a good day?" |
"Yeah," Terra replied. She grinned. "Some of those trick-or-treaters tonight were kind of amusing. Especially that Power Ranger kid all dripping with glowsticks."
Mira snickered. "Oh I know. I swear, the kids get more amusing every year." She grinned. "That's okay, though. We still get to laugh at them."
"Yup," Terra replied. She grinned. "We need some motion-activated decorations next year," she said. "Spiders, scarecrows, something."
