"I'm sure," Primrose responded, grinning a bit. She flicked her tail a bit, already bored, and just watched the rather harsh lights from outside the glass play over her scales.
Allyn spent most of the day just relaxing in the tank, occasionally moving or flicking his tail to awe the crowds. But really being in the tank was boring.
Primrose had never had a more boring day at work. She was almost glad when the doors closed for the day; almost. When the doors were locked to the public, she sighed.
"I hadn't realized how bad it really is in here," she commented. "It's so... bland." |
"It is," Allyn agreed. "Granted, less bland than when we first arrived, but still bland." He shrugged, watching some fish swim by.
"I am so sorry," Primrose said. "If I had realized, I would have tried harder to get you both released."
Allyn shrugged. "I am sure there will be some solution presented," he said, unconcerned. Because he knew this wouldn't last forever.
"I hope so," Primrose said. She sighed. "Ugh, it would be so easy to just get out of the tank and change so we could walk, but we'd never make it out without being caught."
"You can't make it out of the room without being caught," Allyn said with a wry smile. He knew from experience.
"I know," Primrose replied. "I know where all the cameras are. There aren't any real blind spots, not big enough to hide a person."
"Unfortunately." Allyn shrugged. "Perhaps your friend will make a similar agreement?"
"I don't know," Primrose replied. "No offense, but I hope not. One of us being found out is bad enough, I don't want it to happen to her."
"I suppose so." Allyn shrugged. "How long have you been working here?"
"Almost as long as I've been living topside," Primrose replied. "They had just started up the whale exhibit, so I applied to work there. And when they wanted to run a mermaid show, I just glued some rhinestones and streamers onto myself and gave them what they wanted."
Allyn snorted at that. "Innovative," he said with a grin. "Don't think I've ever heard of that before."
"It was an easy way to make some extra money," Primrose said. She grinned a bit. "Some gold studs, yellow rhinestones, and a couple of gold ribbons, and I was good to go."
"I bet." Allyn shook his head. "I imagine it made for quite a show, too."
"Every show sold out," Primrose said, grinning. "Lilac joined me occasionally, sometimes we put on a little dance."
Allyn shook his head, amused. "Well, it certainly sounds like a good way to fit in and still have fun without being discovered."
"Until I was stupid and gave myself away," Primrose replied. She stretched a bit and then rolled over so she was on her back on the sand. Her tail and pectoral fins fluttered a bit in the slight current.
Allyn stretched before he relaxed, still wound around a strand of kelp. Because he was comfortable there.
Primrose curled up amongst the corals, content to stay there for a while. She wasn't as fond of kelp as Allyn seemed to be; she preferred sand and coral.
Lilac, meanwhile, was having a bit of trouble adjusting. She worried about Primrose all night and ended up going to sit outside for a while, dangling her feet off her back porch and into the water. Ah the joys of living almost on the water.
Bryn was much more careful this time as he ventured near the shore. He had spent all day setting the affairs of the kingdom to rights and assuring everyone that he was fine, that Allyn was safe where he was for the moment, and that it was best not to venture too far from the city for the time being. Which, of course, he was doing. He found that he couldn't sleep, so he slipped past his own guards and went for a swim. He surfaced not far from a human dwelling, and he peered around an outcropping of rocks to make sure it was safe. He paused when he saw Lilac, and ventured closer.
"I take it sleep is also eluding you tonight?" he commented once he was within earshot. |
Lilac blinked and looked at him. She hadn't expected to see him again so soon. Or, y'know, ever. But she nodded.
"Yeah. Can't sleep." She smiled a bit, though it was thin. |
"Neither can I," Bryn replied. "Would you like some company?"
