Sansa and Kisu

Quote:

Demons and various things from the underworld began crawling out of the ground and leaping from portals. Humans tried and tried everything they could to get rid of the beasts coming in and tearing apart whole villages and huge towns. They had no idea what made these creatures suddenly attack. There were all kinds of theories, some crazy, some understandable. But, to be honest, none of them mattered. What mattered were the humanoid beasts hurting people.

Finally, one day a knight discovered a mother dragon who was being attacked (Since the demons aren't too picky about what they eat.), and he watched something amazing happen: Her fire reduced the demons to dust. Where nothing else had worked, the creature they had tried to destroy for centuries easily dispatched them. While she was busy fighting, he snuck behind her, grabbing two large heavy eggs, and darted away.

And instead of killing the dragons like they had for centuries, these eggs were laid in a great bonfire. They burnt this huge fire for a month and five days. Finally, two tiny females hatched. Everyone in the city held their breath, weapons at the ready, but the first people the two dragons set their eyes on became that dragon's whole world.

And the dragons became that for these two. They were respected, revered, loved. It took years for the dragons to grow to full strength. During that time, they were moved around and hidden repeatedly, until the humans they had inprinted on clung to their backs, and the dragons flung themselves from a tower, towards the invading demon army.

Green flames burst from the green dragon, and white acid was spit from the white dragon. They destroyed the whole army, just the two of them. It was the first city that had fallen under attack that was saved.

The dragons continued to grow and mature. Eventually, both females left. They stayed away for many, many months. The riders fell into depression, and told everyone they could feel their dragons. They told people, 'My Dragons are safe. They have something they need to do, but they won't tell us what.'

They returned eventually, and their riders ran to greet them, puzzled, but pleased. Almost a full year later, twenty seven dragon eggs were laid between the two females.

Thus began the dragonriders.

Every year, a few select dragons are sent out to select more dragonriders. They pick people they trust. Those people are brought to huge schools. These two schools were erected in honor of the first dragons, and named for them: Ariath and Eveloth. They contained hundreds of dragons and riders, all being trained to protect the people in their country. No matter how small an outpost, at least two dragons manned each one.

The children waited while the eggs hatched. Once they did, the tiny dragons would look around, and select one of the children as their rider. The process was called imprinting, and was common with various other animals as well. The children and dragons grew together, and learned together.

The dragons changed as well. They developed a very limited form of telepathy with their riders, able to state small sentences. The bond grew stronger and stronger in each generation. Riders usually ended up mating with the rider of the dragon's mated dragon. Riders usually died if their dragons died. As did the dragons if their riders did. It became a sacred relationship, though not well understood, by anyone involved. But it was necessary, due to the threats, and so the strange way the riders behaved and adored their dragons were overlooked.
Seventeen years old. Twelve hard years of training all led to this point. Classes in the morning, chores in the afternoon, and riding practice in the evening. And it was all behind him now! He felt like shouting for joy! Oh, there would still be lots of work. Patrols and practice flights, but flying was wonderful! Even when his body ached and he couldn't move, he belonged on Seijun. ~Dramatic!~ The voice inside his head brought the dark haired male back to reality.

Okay, so the years didn't all lead up to this point, but it was a step above where he had been. Today was the first day of internship. He would be one of two students sent to the ruins of New Europe. Thousands of years old, the city had been demolished in one of the first Demon attacks. Now a bunch of scientists were out there, digging around and seeing what they could learn or salvage. Per safety regulations, they had to have two dragonriders. One was sent from Ariath, and one from Eveloth. And each rider had selected an intern. Merrik was the rider Teagan's intern.

They were currently flying over the land, Merrik's silvery blue dragon close to Teagan's huge dark green. Through his glasses and dark hair whipping around his face, the male could see Teagan signalling ahead.

~Ranor says we are close.~ The feminine voice touched his mind once again. And, as always, a rush of warmth enveloped Merrik. His dragon was his world. Completely. Her mere voice still sent shivers down his spine. He may tease her, but without his precious Seijun, the young rider would be lost. He'd seen it happen. It was horrible. He pushed those thoughts from his mind, but more took the empty space. Seijun was reaching maturity, and she was 'flirting' a bit more than he liked.

Riders often ended up with the rider that their dragon chose to mate. And typically, a female rider had a female dragon, and vice versa. The riders had no choice in the matter, though their dragons took it into account, they untimely chose the dragon that they lilked the most. Seijun would choose a male, and, looking at the odds, meant that Merrik would end up with a male. It was something he'd thought he had come to terms with, but, to be honest, now that the time was drawing near, it worried him. He'd seen riders that hated each other end up sharing a bed. It didn't change their feelings. They just got drawn into their dragons feelings, and it happened. He could deal with being in a relationship with a man, though his parents would not be pleased. But, what if it was not only a man, but a man that Merrik didn't even like? ~Overthinking. Like always. Stop.~ The command from his dragon made the male smile.

He was ripped from his thoughts as Teagan began to dive. Merrik followed close, and could see shadows on the ground growing. It looked like Ariath's Riders were already here. Showing off a bit, Seijun and Merrik pummeled downwards, much farther than they should have, before pulling up and landing smoothly. Teagan shot him a glare, and Merrik knew he'd suffer later, but he was still grinning when he dismounted, loosening the saddle. He tugged his gloves off and moved his goggles to his neck before glancing around, a lopsided grin on his face. It was usual for him. He tended to joke around far more than he should, and so he almost always had a permanent smile.

Darien was resting on top of Naga, exhausted from the days flight. Aruna had insisted that they push hard the entire way, so that she could beat her mate back to the base. "It's a little game we play, and he usually wins by a few minutes...not this time!" Darien hadn't seen the point in wasting the energy, but Naga had flared his wings, ready to accept the challenge. They had won, and had been waiting for over an hour now. Groaning he sat up to stretch, and that was when he first to spotted the pair in the distance. "About time." He mumbled, Naga rolled his eyes, standing now as well and making Darien tumble off his back. "Why do you have to be like that Naga?" Darien groaned, rubbing his head. 'No fun.' The dragon chuckled in his head. Darien pouted.

The dragon let his head rest on Darien's shoulders as Aruna stepped forward, her dragon soon following. "They must be close, Malna can sense Ranor. She's getting excited." The rider laughed, stroking her dragon. It was easy to see that she was excited too. Darien nodded in their direction and Aruna's eyes lit up. "I won this time! He'll never live it down." Malna also looked quite pleased with herself. Though, when they touched down, Aruna had given Damien a big speech about how 'it wasn't all fun and games up here.'.

Darien didn't even want to be 'up here'. He had wanted to go south with Kari and her dragon - and if he could have convinced Naga to mate with her, he would have been able to - since the law stated you weren't allowed to keep a dragon from its mate. But Naga was stubborn - insisted that Kala wasn't 'the one'. For weeks he had sulked, to the point where even Naga had gotten annoyed with him. He eventually agreed to stop moping about it - but he never agreed to like it. As Teagan touched down the sour look he was giving the intern vanished as Aruna and her dragon ran up to the pair - Darien had to look away at the display of affection, instead he focused on the risqué dive that Eveloth's intern did.

"That was irresponsible of him... What if he hurt his dragon?" Darien said, crossing his arms. He has seen boys at school hurt their dragon and themselves by trying to show off - it always got worse during mating season. 'He won't. She's can fly.' Naga said, sounding impressed. She? And suddenly Naga was nudging him forward towards the dark haired boy and his blue dragon.

Darien wore a bored to match the boys enthused one. "So you're from Eveloth?" He said, unimpressed. It was hard to get Darien excited about things, since he was too serious. Naga liked to tease him about it. 'Be nice.' Naga projected to him, nudging him again. Darien sighed, one hand reaching back to run his hand through his hair, the other he extended to the boy. "I'm Darien, this is Naga. Nice to meet you." Better?" 'It will do.'

While his teacher moved to meet his mate, Merrik had eyed the new pair he'd never seen before. He doubted he would be friends with this boy. He had a rather serious air about him. It was confirmed when he didn't even crack a smile at Merrik's landing. This will be a looong mission, love... He informed Seijun.

His dragon flicked her tail, letting it sting the side of her rider's legs. Always negative. Dragon seem nice. The strange colored dragon stepped forward, bumping noses with Ranor, then Malna, giving them a small keening sound. She turned to face the new dragon, waiting to go to him last, so Malna and Ranor could finish greeting each other uninterrupted, and because she wanted to be able to take her time meeting the new dragon she would be working with. Not to mention it was a male, and every single male had the possibility of being her mate. Leave no stone unturned. She bumped noses with the dragon, ignoring her rider as he began speaking, and instead chatting with the new dragon.

"Oh..." A handshake? Good Gods...Merrik had to hold back a laugh. This guy, Darien or whatever, was probably top in his classes, sitting in the desks up front, flying right next to the instructor. After a moment, Merrik held out his hand, shaking Darien's awkwardly. "I'm Merrik. This is Seijun." Already expecting a comment about Seijun being a female, he rushed ahead. "Yeah, a girl. Guy with a girl dragon. It happens, and I wouldn't change it." He folded his arms over his chest and stepped next to the female. It was one of the reason's Merrik kept to his tiny group of mischievous friends. He hated meeting other dragonriders because they thought he must be weaker than them or something along those lines. Less manly.

His attention on her now, Merrik paused, puzzled. Seijun was always considered friendly by dragon standards. But, he wasn't sure he'd ever seen her rubbing her forehead on another dragon's neck before. The dragon noted his scrutiny. Likes him. Nice. Unsaddle so Seijun can fly to river? Puzzled, Merrik stepped forward, unsaddling her the rest of the way.

The female spread her wings and took a few small steps forward, almost a dance, then glanced back to Naga. She did the tiny dance again, obviously inviting the creamy white dragon to come with her.

"Saddles go in the barn down this path. We'll work out patrol shifts later today. For now, get the saddles taken care of and make sure everything will be ready for your dragons." It was clear Teagan was speaking to them both. Merrik groaned and turned around to start down the path. He didn't notice the look Teagan gave the boy's two dragons, or the look he gave to Aruna. and began trudging down the path, the strange behavior of his dragon pushed from his mind at the long list of items laid in front of him.

"Yeah, Eveloth. Never been to Ariath. I heard it's a lot warmer down there." The male stated, glancing back to make sure Darien was indeed following. "Excited to start your internship?"
