Terra felt his eyes go wide. "I.." what the hell. how could he rate a water cat? those.. they HAD no owners. and as a witches familiar. oh gods. "I..a..are..are you going to be my ..my partner?" he asked almost uncertain. maybe it just liked the way he smelled?

The feline cocked its head before moving toward him. It curled around his ankles, rubbing against him before turning to water again as it moved behind him. Pale arms with pastel blue tattoos swirling from the backs of the hands and along the forearms draped over his shoulders. A cheek pressed against his lightly and he saw hair the color of sapphires and onyx fall over the right side of his chest in waves and curls.

"Yes, indeed, I will be your partner, but never your pet," a purring female voice warned him. "You shall call me Vania. What name shall I call you?" All familiars had real names and shared names. Just as witches learned to have. He could give her his real name, and thereby give her power over him, or a false name. As their bond grew, along with trust, then eventually she would see fit to gift him with her name. It was wiser to let a familiar, especially a Water-Cat, to share first. They could be powerful, and devious, creatures.

Terra considered that as he nibbled his bottom lip. what name to give. give her power over him.. and break his teacher's well teachings. or give her a false name until they trusted one another more. he stared straight ahead a moment trying to ignore the feminine figure pressed against him. "Ven. Call me Ven." he murmured quietly. refusing to give her his real name as well.

She gave a chuckle and soon there was a little feline draped over his right shoulder. Her voice was soft but distinct in his mind. Well then, Ven, we are partners now. My specialties are scrying, spying and portal traveling through reflective surfaces, seeing the soul of someone in their eyes, and several other water magics you will see in time. I shall teach them to you as well.

She stretched her fore-paws, claws gingerly raking at his shirt. And the dwarf might be of use. If you meet him again a second time. Second meetings by chance, according to witches, were how one knew for certain when a fate was shared.

Ven stared forward for a moment then sighed. All right, if we meet him after we disembark the boat and separate, then i might be polite. but you have to admit, he was rude. you do not talk to a submissive when its alone. or even when it has a dominant with them. he shouldn't of done that. Non humans where stronger, faster, and longer lived then humans. They tended to make sounds like a feline would. not a cat. but one of the larger breeds. such as lions or tigers. Growls, hisses, snarls, they even purred when content or happy. Submissives where Females or Males. Who could become pregnant.

Dominants where the exact opposite. they tended to be six feet, or taller, and the ones who controlled the shorter, five feet delicate boned, though able to punch a whole through stone houses, or pick up boulder's and throw them as if they where nothing. the fact Ven was traveling alone, was an oddity. one that was sure to draw attention. not that he couldn't handle himself. he was now a witch of the first order. he controled both nature and fire. but then if a submissive was by themselves, they where fair game to any dom who could beat them and mate them. so perhaps, if they met the dwarf again, having him as a companion would be a good thing. not as good as having a family member with him. who was a dominant. but a good thing.

The next time Ven would see the dwarf was late that night. The moon was full and hovering high in the sky and there was no clouds in sight, giving a clear view of the stars. Steingir was on the deck, smoking from a long tobacco pike, puffing rings of smoke into the air as he watched the waves crash against the sides of the ship. He leaned slightly against his hammer as he continued to take drag after drag from his pipe. Eventually, he looked over his shoulder at Ven with a faint smile."Well, here I thought you didn't like me."He said calmly before looking back over the side of the ship to watch the ocean's waves.

Ven snorted as he pointedly moved to the other side of the ship away from the dwarf and leaned against the banister. who said he didn't like the other. simply because he was top side didn't mean shit. it was a small boat. they where bound to run into each other.

"You know, you're never going to make friends like that, lad."Steingir replied, soon going over to the side of the ship Ven was on."You need to be more open. Keeping to yourself will harm any chances you have of expanding your horizons. Trust me, I've probably been around much longer than you have. If you want to learn more about the world, you need to be friendly with the people you meet."

Ven flicked his gaze towards the other, eyebrow coming up. "Considering I am not human, and am breaking rules as is. no I do not need to be friendly. if you knew your non human lore, as well as you should, Dwarf. you would know I am submissive. and submissive's do not talk to strangers." considering he was a boy in female clothing it was hard to miss he was a submissive. but then apparently this dwarf hadn't kept up on things himself.

"A submissive? Bah, too many rules and regulations for your kind."The dwarf replied."Your people don't know how to relax. Nope, it's all about fighting and proving whose worthy of what or whose the alpha of what group. Making a man dress like a woman just because he's a submissive is another thing I don't like about your people."

Ven stared at him ey es wide. what the hell was he saying. Ven WAS a submissive. sure there where a few rules but it was more for human protection then anything else. his mind blanked as to many arguments all but threw themselves forward. "What's wrong with t he way i dress." he snapped back. hey at least he got something out. go him.

"Well, you're advertising that you're a submissive. Sure, I didn't know at first because I'm not around your people often. However, a dom or someone who knows about submissives will recognize you. If you're by yourself, well. You'll be claimed real quick like."The dwarf said matter-of-factly.

Ven counted to ten. counted to ten again and fought the urge to set the dwarf on his ass. instead he turned on his heel and stalked across the boat away fro the irritant. before he threw him overboard. at the same time he 'advertised' that any ways. by scent. non humans, or at least dom's and submissives, had extremely heightened senses. Sight, hearing, taste, smell. even touch. if they focused on on sense they could do things humans wished they could. or used spells to emulate.

Vania yawned, flashing white, sharp little teeth as she laid on his shoulder. When she did not move, it was easy to overlook her. Which was something water-cats were very good at. Well, as uninformed as it might be, his opinion does have some merit. Perhaps you should hide yourself more. A mere mortal male is not going to be as bothered as a submissive non-human. Perhaps something to guard your scent and a little change of clothing? He did have a point in there, somewhere. She was just making better use of it than the dwarf was all. His scent is strong, very much of the earth and masculine, he might mask your own just by being near. Enough time and even short amounts of time apart will be safe.

Vania's wicked little claws stretched and flexed against his shirt again, digging in slightly and prickling at his skin. Not drawing blood, but it was a spine tingling sensation.

We could make use of him. No one else on the ship is as strong scented. That did not mean that the dwarf stunk or any such thing, but it meant his scent was distinctive to her cat's nose.

Ven stared out at the ocean his jaw clenching. he hated it when he was told in no uncertain terms he was wrong. 'but its not PROPER' he wanted to argue. but she'd countered that already. sighing in irritation he turned and stalked back into their quarters. Fine he mentally muttered at her. to remain silent. refusing to make noise that would draw the damned dwarfs attention to him. entering his cabin he slide the skirt that was over his pants off. folding it up and tucking it into his bag. Just because his scents stronger then my own. doesn't mean i'm happy we have to stick by him. he's so.. so.. IRRITATING. and the dwarf was. especially in his disrespect of another species customs.

A purring chuckle filled his mind and he could feel her amusement like a weight in his skull. Little witch, it is rare that we ever do things we like. And as a water-cat, I also make a point to never do anything proper.

Chapter 3: Thief of Spells

(A chapter among MistressLeopard, Start2000Shadow, and TimmyTheNerd.)

The port of Sumarne was only mildly less busy that Nibyna. There were seedier looking taverns and a surprising number of pawnshops lining the docks stacked with crates that made more than a few sounds. Wild animals on a black market. There were good parts of Sumarne, places for tourists or travelers of less devious intents. Vania was the one to guide Ven and his new little friend, a dwarf of unknown origins to them both, to a part of town that, according to her, 'smelled less like death and other unspeakable mortal fluids spilled too freely.'

The urban parts of Sumarne were more slow and quiet, a small town that awaited the attentions of the passing seasons to cause any change in the shops and markets. Spring brought new fresh fruit and young animals, harvest brought hardier things like grain, furs and dried meats to the shops. As it was mid-summer, there were dried fruits aplenty and many dried herbs and fresh pressed flowers as well cultivated to the end of springtime before their cutting. These were actually high demand witchery supplies that were cheap. Apple blooms were worth their weight in gold to the right person, the same for various common herbs that people took for granted to season foods.

Vania glanced sidelong at the dwarf before saying to Ven, See, he's not so horrible to have around. He may chatter a little, but it's only a little. And who knows, perhaps as a pair you shall find decent work. And he can go ahead of you to find traps. Cold reasoning, but it was a cat's logic.

Ven took in Sumarne and blinked. as he took int he urban parts of the place. breathing tentively, having pulled his scarf up over his nose to protect against the less then pleasant scents from the other part of town he gave a relieved sigh. finally. Ugg could that place of stank more? then he thought about that.Don't answer that Vania.. at the other's comments Ven frowned. he wasn't, personally that cold. not really but. the cat DID have a point. the dwarf was used to fighting, he'd be able to handle possible traps better then Ven. who's only fighting had been learning how to 'defend' his honor.
or more his virtue he supposed. Submissives and dom's didn't really care about 'honor' honor got you killed.

Might I suggest finding an inn or a tavern to get a meal from. Somewhere that doesn't smell of rat, she said with a slight sniff at the end of her tone. She might have looked like a cat but even she had limits. Birds, cream, fish, these she enjoyed. But rodent? Not in the least. Ven could all but see the sneer as her little cat lips curled.

Vania's ears perked as she sniffled. That one, called The Rex, it smells fresh and like nothing has rotted there ever. That alone would be enough to make her willingly go in. And I smell fresh great clams being sliced up. Tell the dwarf we're eating there.

Ven raised an eye brow as he turned his head so he could meet the water cats eyes. "You are a bossy little thing." but the thought of nothing rotting in the building was enough to get him to inform the dwarf that yes. they where eating there. he shifted his bag so he could have a firm arm around it. refusing to let anything happen tot he books he was memorizing. he'd rather not have some idiot find out the hard way they had magic by reading aloud spells that could do real harm.

once they where in and all three, well two, and a cat, where seated. he set his bag so it was still looped around his shoulders, but the pouch section settled into his lap. then breathed in and gave an almost relieved sigh. just sweet hay, which was what covered the floor to collect the spilled bear and food, then got swept up and thrown into the fire place at the end of the day. while fresh was placed down in the morning. it ensured no bugs, and other rodents would live there.

***In a dock warehouse.***

Sword's head came up slowly, his hood hanging low to guard his face. He was clad in dark gray leather pants that laced up the sides and a matching vest over a long sleeved white shirt. His gloves were black and the hood attached to his vest was white fabric. He sat on the edge of a crate, one heel braced against the ledge. Held loosely in his right hand was a highly polished rose wood staff carved intricately with various runes. He tapped the end of it lightly against the crate in thought.

"Feel that?" he prompted of his associates. "Darling, tell me you felt that?" he prompted of his second in command, turning his head slightly to see his companion whom had spent the last five minutes getting the tension out of his shoulders. Tension that had returned full force. "A witch with some potential entered town. Ready for a little raid?"

Kit raised an eyebrow. her almost feline like eyes glittering. she tended to keep her human form most of the time. "You just want to see if this one has what your looking for.." She purred out leaning forward to give him a nip on an ear lob. before pulling back. Kit stood at five foot even, with a delicate figure. she moved with a felines grace, but considering she was feline. it wasn't to surprising. she was a familiar. and she'd been attracted to sword when he'd come into her territory. so she'd stayed with him.

Sword shifted his staff and glanced it over, raising his free hand to tap a fingertip against one faintly glowing rune, a pale blue light coming from it. "And the witch comes with a water-cat," he muttered. "Lovely, that's all we need, an elemental creature. It couldn't be something more normal? A fire-bird or a fairy or a wisp." He knew water-cats were outright vicious. His own Kit might get hurt for she was no water-cat. Similar, a cousin due to her magical nature but not a water-cat.

"I don't want you facing off with the thing alone," he said sternly. "I cannot lose you." He reached back and gestured for Kit to come to him, wanting her in his lap. "What shall we do with the new witch in town?"

Kit bristled at his order but she moved into his lap readily. sulking slightly. "Well first we should probably part the witch from their books. if we're lucky they haven't finished the normal three sets. meaning the magics not bound tot hem.." she muttered. burrowing her head against his chest even as she fought not to work her claws into his shoulder in retaliation for the order not to tangle with the water cat. She'd been known to be just as vicious when defending her witch. even if he didn't have as man y gifts as some of the witches out there he was still the best fit for her.

"Don't pout, my little darling," he said, stroking fingertips along her spine to make her purr. "I promise, if you are a good girl and we finish this job swiftly, I'll see any duplicate spells or magics I gain on the market and buy you something shinny. My pretty kitty hasn't been fed like a queen and pampered at an inn in far too long." He did love to spoil her. He nuzzled her ear and she could feel his smirk against the shell of it.

Kit shuddered feeling her lips twitch. "We'll have to wait.. send.. someone to distract her or him form being guarded..you know how little warning their teachers are allowed to give them.. " no the rest was the job of the familiar they attracted. Kit tended to remain in her human form, as it pleased her witch. and well he did love pleasing her in return.. she didn't know of any other familiar who was as spoiled as she was. "And don't you go getting yourself hurt. for all you know the little witchling might know some spells that could harm you."
