PapillonCameo 03-31-2014 12:38 AM

Kane kicked off his shoes. The sand was nice and warm, not too rocky either. Unexpectedly, the lawyer found himself looking over Dean. Measuring, and assessing. Fine lines, defined muscles; it would have been hard to miss why Dean was a model. It looked like something he probably did very well, with his happy demeanor, and bubbling energy. That was obvious with all the wriggling Dean was doing. Kane laughed and settled down beside him on the sand. "Well ... what do you do then?" said Kane with a tilt of his head.

Tachigami 03-31-2014 12:48 AM

Dean grinned under Kane's watchful gaze. He felt like his stormy eyes were touching him, sliding over his body, studying, picking up what many wouldn't. He didn't mind that level of scrutiny. He welcomed it, in fact, and leaned back a bit so Kane could assess more. He pursed his lips, staring at the water nearby. "Hmmm... Well hopefully this doesn't scare you off, but I'm well known in the porn industry." He smiled a bit sheepishly. "No movies or videos, just magazines. I have a few solos, even. I guess they like my form enough to pay me big time to fill a whole book." He laughed, shaking his head. "Didn't think you'd ever see any of my work, I don't exactly wear... many clothes when I'm in front of the lens."

PapillonCameo 03-31-2014 01:20 AM

Kane paled. "Oh good lord .." Quickly, he looked away. His eyes went to the ocean, to the grass, to the trees, to anywhere but Dean. "You're right, I haven't seen any of your work. Damn ... Probably wouldn't ever want to, to be honest." Though he was curious about what exactly ... Shaking his head hard, Kane dismissed the thought quickly. The thought of the havoc t hat could create with work! Well that just sent horrible shivers down his spine. "Why that kind of modeling?"

Tachigami 03-31-2014 01:28 AM

Dean bit his lip, snickering and finally falling back and laughing. Kane had reacted just as Dean expected him to. "Well if you're eeeeever curious, you can always go to any bookstore and go through the curtain in the back of the main room. They got all the good stuff back there. You'll find me near the top shelf, usually second to top." He rolled back over, sitting up and rearranging the knot that tied his shirt to his waist.

"Why that kind? Uhhh... Well I dunno. I tried stuff with clothes but it felt really awkward. Like I had a parachute on all the time. And the poses were just all wrong for the stuff. So I thought, 'Why not try something with fewer articles of clothing?' and lo, I was hooked. I like the thrill of being laid bare in front of cameras, lit up so you can't hide, allowed to experiment with different poses and pairs and styles. I have a reaaaally good contract lined up for tomorrow." He grinned at the thought, remembering to go home and find some of his things. He had to get some opinions on them, of course, but there was plenty of time for that.

PapillonCameo 03-31-2014 01:37 AM

Kane shook his head vehemently. "No way! Do you have any idea how that would go down? People could use that kind of thing to throw away my cases in court. " He had to be restrained. There were rules, unwritten ones, that he had to abide by. He couldn't afford to have any kind of stain on his reputation. "Then I wouldn't be able to help anyone. And that just can't happen."

"And I sure hope that contract of yours doesn't make sure that you get ripped off. I may not deal with that industry, but I've heard of some nasty creeps who do." How could anyone like exposing themselves like that? Though he supposed Dean didn't really have anything to hide, or be uncomfortable about. "I bet you're a nudist. And that's why you like it so much."

Tachigami 03-31-2014 01:46 AM

Dean wrinkled his nose. "Hell, it's your life man. Whatever the hell you do in your downtime's your own business." He waved it off, dropping the subject entirely. He had his own life, but it was on display for anyone that read the news or tabloids or Yahoo's homepage. He wasn't careful, though. He lived his life as he wanted to live it, with or without the cameras. "Anyway, I got a damn good lawyer in my corner. Learned that lesson once, and once was enough. Reading contracts is what I do, I'm meticulous even if you don't know it." He winked his green eyes, looking back at the water.

His lips pursed again, this time in surprise at Kane's sudden and steady accusation. Or was it an accusation? He didn't care. "Naah, not much of a nudist. If I were I'd be in a nudist neighborhood and this sure as hell isn't one. Now, a friend of mine, Andy, he's pretty comfortable with his body, hates clothes. Looks for any reason to go with as few as possible." He giggled. "Not that I mind, he's a landscaper and has a good body. Should be a model too, but he's camera shy." Dean shook his head. How the guy could shy away from a lens was a mystery to him, but it wasn't his place to bring him out.

PapillonCameo 04-01-2014 09:57 PM

"I don't fancy getting pictures taken of me either. Just not my thing, which is probably why I avoid cameras whenever I can." Except there was that persistent flash of a lens in the light. It was probably just his imagination but... Kane supposed being on the safe side and asking wouldn't be a bad idea.

He glanced at Dean. "Uhm, did you notice someone following us around with a camera? That was just my imagination, right?" He was nervous about that, especially since he had started to unbutton his shirt even more. The heat was near unbearable by then. But if someone nearby was taking pictures, Kane would cover himself up in a second.

Tachigami 04-01-2014 10:15 PM

Dean glanced over his shoulder, watching the cameras wander the outskirts of the park. He'd made sure that, legally, they couldn't come within twenty paces of him. Some broke the rule, but not many. These were staying more than twenty feet away, at least. He looked around to Kane again and made a single swift move, rolling once away from him. "Yep, paparazzi." He said in response, stretching on the sand again. "They try to catch me at any given time. Dunno why since my life's in front of a camera. But they catch me with all my friends, strangers, whatever. Even a pretty lawyer with storm-eyes won't keep them from me." He laughed, but it sounded tired. "One of the prices to pay when you're in the spotlight the way I am but I knew what I was getting into."

He burrowed one foot into the sand while he threw one leg over the other. "Anyway, there's one place they never try to follow me. A friend's house. Probably because once he threatened to rip their heads off if they followed me so far out again." Dean laughed, shaking his head slightly. "Hell, you can go if you feel uncomfortable... Lot of people do after they see that bit of my life." He stifled a sigh, looking at the sky and marveling at how flawlessly blue it was. Almost painful.

PapillonCameo 04-01-2014 10:56 PM

Glancing back over his shoulder, he noticed how far away the camera bearing people stayed. They didn't seem to wander any closer, almost as if they couldn't. Probably a restraining order. Dean certainly seemed smart enough to think of that. What kind of pressure must that be though? Always having cameras following your every move? There was no privacy, not even a semblance of it.

"Well .... Doesn't seem fair to leave now. Besides, I have nothing better to do then hang out with you, and be stalked by complete strangers for no real reason." People really were odd. They needed to know everything about their idols. All of it. And that was just wrong, in Kane's opinion.

Tachigami 04-01-2014 11:05 PM

Dean snickered, putting a hand over his nose. "Ha, stalked by strangers. That's my life, not yours. I mean I don't mind, I'd stop if I did. But I like being in front of the camera. Like a drug you can't stop once you get a taste. You gotta try it again to see if it's the same, then keep at it because you realize it's reaaaally good." He smiled toward Kane. "So you don't mind hanging around a known skin model with a few cameras around? Must be more to you than you thought." He grinned, digging his hand into the sand and letting it sift through his parted fingers. Maybe there was more to Kane than the guy ever thought. Maybe he lived in a self-imposed exile in a little box and didn't even know there was anything more three-dimensional about him. But he had to feel it sometimes. He was human, obviously---though today Dean realized maybe the humans he knew weren't, in fact, humans. He wasn't going to say anything about that, though. He definitely didn't want to be considered any crazier than he was already.

PapillonCameo 04-01-2014 11:32 PM

His lips clamped shut and for a while, Kane refused to say anything. He knew he would just put his foot in his mouth if he did. All he could think of was that word, skin. He could see quite enough of it. Dean certainly wasn't shy. Far from it, considering his profession. "But doesn't it get lonely? You do seem a bit ... alone." Alright, so that seemed to be the only flaw Kane could find in Dean's happy life. It was a big one, the same one he shared.

Tachigami 04-01-2014 11:40 PM

Dean shrugged, his shoulders scraping the sand he was lying on. "Lonely? Pah." He waved his hand and pushed himself up, using his shirt to dust his back free of sand. The stuff got everywhere... "I have really close friends, I have a key to my best friend's house, we get together Friday night, Saturday and spend all of Sunday together. I have..." How many friends did he have? He had a couple agents that were good friends, and that was including Carose. All three he considered grouped up with the others. "Maybe nine or ten really good, close friends, six I'd peg 'best' friends." He smiled. "Maybe another after today." He smiled, but it was a calm, friendly, open smile, not harboring dirty ideas or thoughts.

"Guess I play the brooding stranger pretty well, don't I? Some people are shocked when I say I even have one friend. Guess they expect me to be aloof. Maybe a bit of an ass. You don't think that, do you?" He was genuinely curious, his face open, his bright green eyes scanning Kane for his answer, or any facial contraction that might give away a lie. Even the most schooled people had one tiny, involuntary tell.

PapillonCameo 04-01-2014 11:55 PM

Alright, so he had friends. More friends then Kane did, many more in truth. It made him a bit jealous. The lawyer's fingers twitched in the sand, and he buried his toes under the cool grains. "You didn't seem brooding to me. No, you seem always busy. And distracted." With a thump, Kane let himself fall onto the ground. "So no, I don't really think that. It just seems like .. like there's something else." But ask him what that was, and Kane certainly wouldn't have been able to say. He barely even knew Dean, after all! But it didn't feel like that.

"Hey hm, am I the only one who wants to meet up again sometime?" Grey eyes tilted to look at the lawyer's companion. The park was near empty. Kane was grateful for that.

Tachigami 04-02-2014 12:05 AM

Dean fell back with him, turning onto his stomach and bringing his feet up to twist around one another. "Something else?" He tapped his chin, thinking about what Kane meant. "Naah, nothing else. Got normal friends and a not-so-normal job. Guess it balances out to make me normal, even if people go looking at me a little longer than the average duck." He laughed, threading his fingers together and resting his chin atop them.

"Hm, noooo... I'd love to meet you again after this." He smiled as if he were trapped halfway in a dream, but his eyes were stuck to Kane's face. "Could tell me what you're allowed about some of your cases if you wanna." He shrugged. "Call me a parasite but I'm curious. Just my nature." He smiled, watching Kane. Why wouldn't he watch this guy?

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 12:20 AM

"Normal, except for the fact that one of them likes walking around in his birthday suit whenever he can,' said Kane with a laugh. He really didn't mean it in a bad way. In fact, secretly he felt himself admiring the courage it took for both Dean and his friend to live as they did, without caring about society's rules. Sometimes ... he wished he could do just that. But there were rules to follow, and Kane always did so dutifully.

Then he noticed Dean was staring. Flustered, Kane wriggled around so that he was lying on his stomach. "So you can stare some more?" Tilting his head, he stared at the ground."My current case is a pretty difficult one, I guess. Though I think I found a way to give this girl what she wants."

Tachigami 04-02-2014 12:35 AM

Dean laughed with Kane, glad that somehow he seemed a bit more comfortable with the idea. And loving the fact that he could actually laugh with someone so easily. It was easy with his friends, but not on that first day of their acquaintanceship. They skirted around the edges, didn't poke and prod at one another, kept their hobbies and thoughts from trickling out too soon. Dean had changed since then, though, and he was far more open. Not that he cared what many people thought---he had what friends he wanted, but this was different. Kane was interesting, and so... different than the rest of them. More tidy.

He smiled a bit, but shook his head in response. "Partly." He admitted, then watched Kane stare at the ground as he spoke. "That's really good." He nodded and smiled. "God, I love kids... They're sweet, and funny, and innocent and good... I mean, a hell of a lot of work no matter the age. I took care of my niece for years after her mom abandoned her. Hard, but... Really rewarding. She came back after she kicked her drug habit and went through the motions to get her back. She was healthy, at least, and had a good job. Finally had a guy that wouldn't hit her around or waste money. But God I miss that little girl..." His voice had taken on a tone of loss, longing, and Dean caught it too late. He flopped over and sighed. "Sorry, dunno why I told you all that. Hell, even Andy didn't know all that on the first day knowing me..." He laughed bitterly, shaking his head and letting the memory seep away. He didn't like keeping them around.

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 01:12 AM

Well that sent Kane blushing again. And this time he had a much harder time hiding it. "W-why?" What was there so interesting about him? He couldn't understand. No one ever stared at Kane, ever. The suit tended to turn people away. If that didn't push them away then the fact that he wasn't even a high profile lawyer did. There were so many stereotypes about lawyers, it wasn't any wonder at all. What puzzled Kane the most, was the fact that it didn't really seem to bother him.

"Oh," Kane lifted his head and smiled. "If more people like you were around, it would make my job so much easier. As for why you told me, well maybe it's because I listen well." The young man laughed. " Kind of part of my job description."

Tachigami 04-02-2014 01:25 AM

Dean shook his head, smiling, and shrugged a little. He didn't know what, other than the look Kane had, had attracted him to the guy. The looks, obviously, but he wanted to hear his voice. Wanted to see a bit beyond that hard-ass facade. And now that he did he didn't want to go back. Ever. He had to go forward, drill deeper even if he had to bring out the heavy tools.

"Hey, you might be a great listener, but it doesn't mean you always want to listen. I don't get that vibe from you. It's like... you wanna hear what I have to say. But hell, I gave you a lot more than you've given me, how about this---what got you into this?" He waved his hand up and down, gesturing to all of Kane. "What made you want to protect the kids? Not a lot of people care, but you do. That's a damned good quality in someone, especially a guy like you. It's a wonder no one's snatched you up." He lowered his gaze, but kept his eyes on Kane through his lashes.

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 01:46 AM

It was true. Kane bit his lip. Did he really want to open up that much? It seemed fair after Dean had blurte out so much, with so little prompting. Absentmindedly, the lawyer dug his fingers into the sand. Each grain slid slowly away, rolled over each other until ending their little escapade. Staring at the ground wasn't quite living up to the distraction Kane had hoped it would be. A bird squawked into the distance. The thing wasn't much of a distraction either.

Kane sighed. "I was a foster kid for a while, before I got adopted. So yeah, I know some of what those kids are going through. I figured if I helped them, maybe it would go that much easier." There were a lot of cases that ended well, or at least favorable. On the flip side, many others ended disastrously. The thought had Kane swallowing hard and sitting upright. Hands upon his knees, he breathed deeply.

Tachigami 04-02-2014 01:57 AM

Dean felt a bit of pain in his chest. Somewhere between his stomach and chest. He didn't feel it often, sympathy. Or sadness quite this acute. He sat up with Kane, getting just a little closer, and put a hand on his shoulder, rubbing small circles, reassuring, calming, nothing more than that. "Hey." He said gently, his bouncy demeanor sobered, his distracted tendencies focused squarely on this. "Yeah, you can't win 'em all. It's pretty rough. Hard to get past. I guess it's harder with a kid than with an adult. Like you're letting them down. I dunno, it just feels really bad to me. But you gotta bounce back. Gotta step forward."

He'd felt the change in Kane almost immediately. Maybe not as uniquely as Andy would have had he been around, but Dean was no fool, and not entirely wiped of the ability to feel anyone's emotional changes. And Kane's change was... deep. Seated there very, very hard, very deep. Like a stubborn weed.

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 02:16 AM

Kane leaned into the touch without even thinking about it. For once there was someone else there, offering an ear and comfort. For a while he forgot about the paparazzi. All he could remember was the warmth, and the huge difference just having someone there made. He found himself leaning in even more. Shoulder to shoulder, that's what they were. Kane's eyes widened when he realized that. But he just couldn't find it in himself to pull away. It just felt so nice to have some support.

Tachigami 04-02-2014 02:26 AM

Dean smiled a little when Kane seemed to absentmindedly come toward him. He moved slightly, offering a solid support for him. It felt like a tiny, tiny little victory. Just one little one, and he felt cemented. He just wanted to be here for the guy, a strange feeling when it bubbled up for anyone outside his tight group of friends. But he felt it now, and that just wormed its way into him. He rubbed his hand over Kane's shoulders, loving the feel of the lean muscles, the way the spine was slightly but not overly defined. "You don't talk about it much, do you?" He felt Kane just seemed to keep these bad things to himself. Probably didn't even write them down. Did he go home and hit things that could take a punch? Drink until he forgot? God, how many times could he do that until he just lost it? Dean shook his head.

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 02:40 AM

The brunette shivered, and shook his head. "Not really. I don't want to bother my parents with it, and my coworkers have their own problems." They were just as burdened as he with their failures. Kane preferred to work on his cases, nose to the grindstone. At least that way, he could do his best to try and prevent any other unhappy endings. The worst ones was when he helped place a child with someone who just ended up ruining the kids.

He couldn't sleep. Insomnia plagued him. There were the nightmares too. Images of cases past, the police investigations that took place after. And the pictures, the newspaper articles... It was all impossible to set aside. With no one to turn to, he worked. That was his life. Work, nothing else, was his downfall and his comfort.

Tachigami 04-02-2014 02:53 AM

Dean bit his lip, shook his head a bit. "That's no good. Keeping it all put up in you. Got to be hard." He shook his head harder this time. Kane probably had a shitload of problems Dean didn't even want to comprehend for fear of getting an irreversible headache. So instead he turned a little, put his arms around Kane and pulled him into a hug. It was half out of sympathy, half out of desperation not to let Kane see the light sheen of tears that were threatening to spill over. It was hard just to listen to, let alone trying to live every day. He'd never have made it a day in Kane's shoes no doubt. He was glad he'd been so adamant to catch his eye.

"Hey... You can talk to me." He said, turning slightly to speak in Kane's ear. He didn't want to use one of his overdone sentiments and scare him off a little like he had earlier. But that unthought-of 'baby' had almost left his lips before he bit it back. "I've got no stress in my life, I could use a little." He chuckled, but it was short-lived, the sound dying quickly.

PapillonCameo 04-02-2014 03:41 PM

It was wonderful. Strong arms wrapped around him and offered support. It was just what Kane needed. He lifted his arms and echoed Dean's movements. "I failed recently. A pair of abusive parents got their kids back because I wasn't able to fight the case well enough. The kids ended up dead last week. It was my fault!" If only he'd been able to figure out a way to make them safe. That was the only thing he'd needed to do. Apparently, it lay quite out of his reach.

"This isn't the kind of stress you want in your life, even secondhand." He didn't even want it in his life. But it was his life. What a conundrum. Kane tilted his head to pillow his head against the other man's shoulder. Why did it feel so nice? Well, he didn't intend to think about it too much.
