Background
In the past, magic was used to solve problems and symbolize power. The world practically revolved around magic. The world began to suffer however. Nature began to wither in places with high concentrations of magic use.

As time went on, science started gaining it's own ground. Technology advanced, and some even applied technology to what they knew about magic to create alchemy. Researchers discovered that the more people used magic, the more the land was drained of it's life source. Up until this point, it was believed most magic came from the heart and soul, and a small amount came from the earth itself. It has been proven most magic is drawn from the land, and very little is drawn from within yourself. The rulers of the land outlawed the use of magic for most, except for the most efficient and specially trained.

Even though very few are allowed to practice magic, it is still looked down upon by many people. They believe if people didn't use magic at all then the land would replenish much faster. There is still a use for magic in society, so at this point in time, magic will continue being used.

Heolstor's Characters
Main Character

〈〈 Raven Ufer 〉〉

Nickname/Alias
You may also know him under the name 'Rave' or 'R'

Age
22 years old, apparently

Sexuality
Heterosexual, although there are rumours going around saying he has a thing for guys too

Personality
Easygoing • Empathic • Blunt • Spontaneous • Wildcard • Unpredictable • Thoughtful • Flirt • Liar
He's so easygoing and does whatever he wants to to the point it can be considered as scary. He walks around seemingly without any strings attached and let life appear as a child's play. Sometimes people even mistake him as a rebellious teen rather than a twenty-two year old grown up. Nothing one him might betray his being to be a magician, but his pride as such always let him reveal his identity and be hated afterward. It isn't Rave when he shut his mouth and let the untruth slip away; in that aspect he's a rather too honest fellow that gets himself involved in many fights before. Not only his pride and honesty however; but especially his sharp sarcastic and blunt tongue that seem to have a talent to pick a fight with others entangled him into trouble.
Nothing about him is steady; never can anyone predict his doings. All done spontaneously without any doubts beforehand and regret afterward, he still counts to be one thoughtful brat despite everything. It might seem to others that he just plays around, meddles into others affair headlessly without being aware of the consequences, but he does know what might come out of it. And he's one stubborn bastard when it comes to his beliefs, although he couldn't care less what others think about him, he does care what others think about some particular sensitive topics. He seem to love making people realise his points. With violence or not; in the end he can even be considered as a gambler from the way he lives which either gets him into prison or let him keep doing what he always does and get away with it. A lying gambler at that.

Background
In the time where Rave's parents lived, those who used magic were still looked up to and respected. The never had to suffer under the discrimination now given to the magicians. Such drastic change broke both of them, swayed them away from the path of using magic and eventually died in a society who believed them to be normal humans. With other words, they betrayed the magic users, a thing Rave won't ever forgive them doing.
In a young age he successfully entered one magic school which still stood despite protests. It was a very famous one, one that taught him everything he needs to survive in the world by using his magic abilities. Even as a little child he was considered as a talented student, eagerly swallowed every teaching day and night as if he was possessed. The teachers were slowly getting worried of his strong desire to get better that they forced him to socialize with others. Somehow, it worked. Despite his social contacts kept him busy and taught him other, important values in life, he was still obsessed learning magic from the core at nights. Until that girl appeared in his life.
Okay, they were rivals. They were the best of the best, and of course they tried to overthrone one another and tried to prove their superiority. Finally, school life became more fun and he enjoyed it more than before. He became more aware of his surroundings and developed various social skills, even showed his empathic side which made him one popular guy. However, he never really neared the girl. It wasn't because he felt little confident, it was rather because he wanted to get better than her before he associated with her. That however, didn't really work until the day they graduated. Not like he was inferior to her, he just didn't feel superior. That was how his school life ended, without ever change a word with the girl. Although he knew that they noticed each other. At least, he hoped so.

◇ ◆ Gail Belltower ◆ ◇
Today was Gail's time to shine. She went to one of the best schools to learn magic, relieved top grades, and was even invited into the most prestigious (and only) guild in the Swiftvale region: Magicgarde.

During school there wasn't much time for socializing... Well, maybe she didn't make time for socializing. She made a few friends, but after having a friend try to get her kicked out in the first year of school, it kind of stays with you. So Gail let herself focus on school, and could make friends and everything after she joined a guild.

Here she was, at Magicgarde. It was early morning, so she'd imagine most people were either already out on a mission, or still sleeping. As she stepped inside, there was a wide array of tables spread out in the main room. Very few people were seated around. Like clockwork, they all turned to Gail, looking her up and down.

For a moment she only gulped down her fear, finally she spoke with as much courage as possible, "Hello... I'm Gail Belltower. I recently graduated from the Academy of Magic." For a moment, it was silent. Then everyone began cheering, yelling out "One of the new recruits is here!"

Her thoughts soon dissipated as an older woman with a very ornate wizards cane walked up to her, and put her wrinkled hands on top of Gail's. "Welcome my child, let me show you around. First, we need to get you unpacked in our local dormitories. Whether you stay here or you stay somewhere else, you'll have to pay rent, so make sure you don't skimp on taking missions!" The woman led her over to what would be her new room, and hopefully her new home.

Raven Ufer
It definitely wasn't an understatement by saying Raven was so overjoyed that he even may give those who were in debt with him two another days, where he normally wouldn't have any mercy. Yes, it was even possible that he might have kissed those ill-mannered girls from yesterday he met at that bar who he told annoying the hell out of him. Not to mention that he would have been willing to volunteer helping out a against-alcoholism movement which he hated so much. Simply, he went crazy receiving that one letter saying that he was invited to join up with Magicgarde, the guild he was aiming for since long.

He repeated his winning screams like a crazied dog until a neighbour popped out their head and glared at Raven as if he was a pest. At least he managed to shortly apologize without letting it seem like he wasn't sorry at all. Then he turned to his now former house, there was a little sadness glittering in his eyes, but it disappeared within a blink and let his usual grin form itself upon his face. At the end he managed to find a good buyer to leave his parental home with, therefore he was happy. Wouldn't want someone bad, stupid or simply out of mind to have the house; it was still something he treasured, despite him giving it away. "Yosh, I am off!" Saying that with an almost whisper tone, being rather too aware of his former neighbour's stare, he whirled around enthusiastically and went his way, straight to the guild's house.

It actually wasn't long until he arrived his destination, but Raven was impatient, staring at the clock of his every ten seconds to confirm how long it was until the train reached where he wanted to go off. Soon the doors opened and Raven whizzed outside, squeezed himself to the front through all the crows of people and with a lot of struggles exited the station. Inhaling the fresh air, he didn't waste much time there and with full speed going to where Magicgarde was. Unexpectedly, a little far off from the city life. Raven knew of the reason, seeing how bad magician's were treated in the now society, but it still irritated Raven. Sometimes, people said his pride made him blind; truly Raven knew how explosive he may get when people cursed magician's existence. Yet it didn't matter much to him, knowing that they deserved to get a punishment after such commission of a crime. Too bad most from the government were on the normal citizen's side, so no law may go through for them to receive better treatment.

An amazed whisle left Raven's lips upon sighting the guild house. It was magistically big, and not so very outdated as he thought it would be. Raven honestly had the real thing in front of him and was soon to enter the gates... delighted with the thought of what will happen once everything started, he entered the grand garden up front and approached the door. With no seemingly fear, he opened the door and found himself in a room with several tables neatly placed. There were not a single person there; Raven was confused. Didn't he get the day right?

He opened the backpack he carried with him and rummaged around to find the letter of invitation, as a woman appeared. "You must be Raven Ufer, am I right?" Raven simply nodded, amazed of her presence. He didn't hear her coming like, at all. No noise, no steps, no nothing. As if he was a ghost, hovering on the ground without making any sound. "Then you're the last one. Welcome to Magicgarde. I see that you're staying in our doorms. Let me show you where your room is." With that she turned, and Raven followed her with his interest piqued to the max.

Raven was given all the information about how everything worked and some paperwork as their arrival at his room. Then eventually the woman stated: "I believe you must be tired from your trip, but I have to call you back to the main room in an hour to determine your partner." As Raven attempted to say that he didn't need one and he wanted to do his missions alone, the woman continued. "It is a requirement, you can't decline." And from her voice Raven knew, she won't ever have a change of heart about that one. "Alright, I get it. In an hour right?" The woman nodded and disappeared soon after.

After an hour passed, Raven stepped downstairs where the main room was and now saw others there, sitting on various of tables surround the one in the middle, where an important looking old woman sat. Somehow Raven could grasp he was to sit across her and did so, of course without forgetting to greet the other guild members with a wink. Then he gazed to the old woman's eyes. "Raven, if I am not mistaken?" She didn't need an answer as soon she continued. "You have to be patient for a little bit, your partner will arrive shortly." And Raven waited.

◇ ◆ Gail Belltower ◆ ◇
As Gail unpacked her stuff, she thought about what the woman had told her. "In a couple hours we will be holding our celebration dinner for our new recruits. Not only will there be food and drinks, but you will also be meeting your partner for the next year's worth of missions. After a year has passed, you can do one of many thing: start solo missions, choose a new partner, or keep your current partner. For safety reasons, you are not allowed on any missions on your own for the time being."

Gail wasn't the kind of person to make waves when it came to rules she didn't understand. If it was in place, it was probably in place for a reason. She looked around her quaint room. It had a small bookcase, a table with two seats, a desk on the other end of the room, a simple bed, an enchanted safe, and small closet. She imagined there were nicer rooms in the dorms, but this one will suffice.

She wore her typical green dress to the gathering in the meeting hall. The old woman was near the stairs, and told her to take any open seat. She sat down with a couple other wizards who welcomed her ealier.

The woman took center stage, and tapped her cane on the floor to get everyone's attention. "Everyone, we have four new recruits coming in this year. Two are recent graduates, two are well known wizards that have decided move into the region. First I'd like to introduce the recent graduates, Gail Belltower and Ravan Ufer!"

A spotlight beamed on Gail, and she was compelled to stand up. The crowd cheered, and she looked over to Raven. Gail knew of him, but she never really got to know him during school. They were more rivals than acquaintances, always trying to outdo each other. In the end, they finished school have equally high grades.
