As the door closed inexplicably behind them, kali looked back at him, an odd sort of smile of her face. "Can you see?" She asked in a bemused tone. For good reason, as now that the door had shut, there was no light at all. Her eyes held a strange glow to them in the darkness however, almost as if she was seeing in a different spectrum.. She turned away before he had answered, moving down the corridor on light feet.
"Just fine." Vharrus replied after a moment of unrest. He was not accustomed to being trapped with another, especially in such a small corridor. It took him a moment to follow her, his nature begging him to give as much distance as possible without alarming her. He kept his footsteps shallow but the echo was still far louder than he liked, it would be impossible for him to disappear here. He paused for a moment a few meters out to listen for Kali's footsteps, despite the distance the between them she sounded miles away. He continued to follow staying clear of the walls and maintaining a decent distance from the mysterious woman ahead. "What book could be so important to hide it with magic?" He thought aloud.
Kali trotted down the corridor, at ease in the pitch black. She had long since put to rest the horror of the drow courts, and now merely used the tools they had taught her. Kit shook her head slightly, not intending to have thought about her past. She smiled at his question though he could not see it, and took a moment before she answered him. "Necromancy is feared throughout yhe mortal realms. Yet, you can find yoyr basic Necromancy books in any reputable book sellers wares. What this holds goes beyond simply restoring the body." A look of hatred crossed her eyes, and her lips curled briefly into a snarl. Glad he could only see her back, kit tramped down those thoughts and got them under the masking smile once more.
Vharrus wasn't surprised by her answer, but the moment of unease that followed it brought him quickly to guard; he lengthened his stride to slowly close the gap between the two. "I am well aware of Necromancy and its reputation." His voice was hushed, an inherent reaction to the topic, but in this corridor he may very well have shouted it; like his every step he heard a clear echo of each word. He wondered for a moment if his unease had heightened his senses or if magic was at play. "Yul'mah, Yul'dur and my current state are the results of such magics, if that wasn't clear to you already." Yul'mah tilted her head at the mention of her name and Vharrus shook his head in answer to a question not asked aloud. "Now that's a story for a book..." He trailed off, a mix of many emotions crossed his face and the bones beneath his skin writhed as if in pain. "Perhaps one day I will write of my people, though I feel that book will be much better guarded than this one." A hint of a laugh escaped him at the thought.
Kit smiled thinly into the darkness, absently trailing her hand along the wall. She couldnt resist pausing as he moved closer, waiting for him to catch up a few steps. They had steadily descended several levels now, and Kit was vaguely irritated by this - if the damn mortal had wanted to put the book in the cellar, why did they have to start on the top floor? "There should have been even a rudimentary trap by now." she muttered in response, listening, but paying more attention to their route. Then again, she also hated questions - to her or from her. She very nearly considered it cheating. Questioning was easy.. giving someone just an opening and having them give out information was much better. Still, to keep him talking.. "Why would you need to guard a simple story?"
"A simple story?" Vharrus couldn't help but laugh, a true laugh unlike any he was used to. "My dear girl, this story is by no means a simple one." His own tone of voice took him by surprise, it was a tone he hadn't spoken in for many years; anyone hearing it might truly believe he was happy. "The fact that the dragons are involved is reason enough to destroy it. Beyond that, it would reveal a large amount of history that the humans are unaware of, the story of this world before their arrival. I took much care in eradicating any trace of my people and the dragons for good reasons, Kali." At this point he had caught up with Kali and slowed his pace to stay beside her. Vharrus motioned for Yul'mah to move ahead of them, an order that the beast obeyed without question. "She can withstand any trap built by human hands, even magic would have a difficult time killing her." Pride was evident in his eyes as he spoke. "There is power in knowledge, Kali, I'm certain you're aware of that."
"Huh. Well, anything those lizards have dealings with should be destroyed. " she grumbled, giving his Yul'mah a dark look as she passed by her. She forgave the lofty words, for after all, she had chosen this form. "Though any tale like that, the humans regard as myth; you have nothing to worry about from them.."
"I can't take the risk that someone might start looking, Kali." Vharrus knew what magic was capable of in the wrong hands. "I must warn you.." In a moment he was only an arm's reach from her, carefully placed in her eyes blind spot. "Do not talk ill of my dragons." He was sure to keep any malice from his voice, unsure of how she would react to a threat. As soon as he finished speaking he allowed himself to fall back a few paces and became guarded. "My control over them is limited."
Kali continued on without batting an eye, her footsteps falling within inches of Yul'mahs tail as it moved along in front of her. Her answer was in a mild tone, much as his was, though there was a frosty edge to the words, clipped and short-spoken. "Limited indeed; no lizard will listen unless it chooses to, especially the children." she stated, the frosty edge disappearing into another grouchy tone. It was obvious she disliked the race as a whole, though there was no ill-will in her voice that implied she wished to harm his companions. ...Although the tail-stepping was deliberate.
Yul'mah clearly took offense to Kali's words, turning her head to look Kali in the eyes as she walked. Vharrus whistled to get her attention before shaking his head. He had no idea what the beast intended, but was sure that it was a bad idea. "Do not judge them by their form, Kali." His tone shifted from mild to what would almost seem sad. "Unlike the majority of summoned beasts these two have no master. To master a dragon, even one pulled back from the grave, would be a great feat indeed. They listen to me of their own free will, and as such they are capable of disobeying me as well." He looked Yul'mah in the eyes pleadingly, and the beast turned her attention back ahead; her head held high. "Fickle as always, 'mah." Vharrus turned his attention back to Kali. "Yul'mah and Yul'dur aren't..." He searched his mind for the right word, but couldn't find it. "Complete." He settled on the most accurate word he could think of. He went quiet for a moment, clearly drowned in memories he would rather ignore.
Kit opened her mouth to retort, her thoughts running along the lines of no lizard being complete in the head, but she didnt get the words out. Instead she stopped moving, focused on something they could not see yet. Her vision currently revealed nothing past the next bend in the corridor, but in the darkness beyond there where sounds of movement, and a faint lightening of the darkness ahead. Kali knew enough of Vhar to know he would see the indication of someone ahead just as she did, so she said nothing of it, merely began proceeding again a touch more slowly, and not trying to step on the tail in front of her.
Vharrus nearly ran into Kali when she stopped. He found himself far too close for a moment, sure that she could feel his breath on her neck. He took a step back and turned his attention toward hers. The light from down the tunnel seemed blinding even though he was sure it was faint, in response he dimmed his sight and sharpened his hearing. Footsteps could be heard clearly, only one set as far as he could tell. He tried to listen more, but as Kali began walking again the sound was drowned out. He rebalanced his senses and followed silently. Yul'mah picked up the pattern, lifting her tail from the ground and stepping lightly, her fleshless wings tucked carefully to her sides and her body low ready to strike.
Kali swept along behind the dragon kit, her eyes narrowed against the influx of light.
When they rounded the final turn, an odd sight waited for them. A tall, lanky man was striding about the room, a mop of haphazard brown hair falling into his eyes. He was engrossed in the book they had come for, thin nose nearly touching the page. A gaurd lay crumpled at his feet, clearly knocked out and very nearly dead. A small ball of light was bouncing repeatedly off of the guards head, bobbing there as if to taunt him had he been awake. The slender man turned to face the approaching pair, and red eyes glittered dangerously for a moment. Then he bounded forward, long strides taking him to them in only a few steps. "Well you certainly took your time! And after I cleared the way for you and everything." This was directed at Kit, and then without waiting for an answer he eyed Vhar. "And whos this long lout?" He demanded of them, brilliant eyes studying Vhar with wary recognition. |
Vharrus's guard allowed him to maintain his composure as the strange man approached. This man was clearly familiar with Kali, and something about the way he looked at Vharrus made his skin crawl. Vharrus looked past him for a moment to the guard on the floor. He was nothing special, a mere human by the looks of it, certainly not a challenge for a demon. Vharrus nearly laughed as he watched the light bouncing off the body's head, he couldn't tell if it was a lighthearted joke or adding insult to injury. He turned his attention back to the stranger just as Yul'mah strafed around to his back teeth bared in a silent growl.
"A greeting I'd only expect from a demon." Vharrus's tone was low, a hint of anger lurking beneath it; he was clearly offended. He forgot their purpose here completely, and focused solely on the man before him unsure of his motives or intent. He forced himself to act relaxed. "My name is Vharrus, apparently." He allowed himself a quick glance at Kali. It hadn't been long since they met, but he had come to be somewhat attached to the name she gave him. "Behind you is Yul'mah. She doesn't seem to like you much." Yul'mah turned to Vharrus and raised her head. "She really doesn't like you." Vharrus ignored her as she tilted her head, he had hoped she'd play along but truthfully she was more curious about the stranger than anything. "So, who is this man?" He kept his eyes trained on the stranger's as he spoke, but was clearly speaking to Kali. |
Aubrey didnt let Kali answer, instead bounding forward and siezing Vhar's hand in an overly enthusiastic greeting. He had lept backwards again before a heartbeat had passed, lanky frame bending into an elegant bow. "Aubrey, lovely to meet another of my Lady's tag-alongs.." Aub turned around, and dropped to the floor, now staring at eye-level with Yul'mah with a quizzical expression. He grinned, revealing sharply pointed canines, though onlt the dragon kit could see them at this point. He held up a hand, a delicate wing cuff cupped in it. "Well I like her." He chirped, offering the bauble to her. It seemed to be made of silver, but there were layers of spells attached to it, clearly meant as a form of protection against other mage spells. Aub didnt wait for her to take it, but laid it down in front of her. He tipped his head in a vague gesture of respect, then bounded to his feet again, spinning to face the others again. "And im not a demon." He said mildly, as if scolding Vhar. "But I thought that your race had been wiped out."
At this point, Kali was looki g exasperated, hands on hips as Aub lept about. For a Lord, he certainly didnt act like one. |
Vharrus held his composure through Aub's oddly familiar greeting. He turned to Kali at the mention of his being another of her 'tag-alongs.' His face was plastered with questions, and he needn't words to express his discontent with being simply another. He forced his attention back to Aub as he offered Yul'mah his little gift. Even his senses could make out the magic contained in the silver piece so he was sure Yul'mah was ecstatic over the gift. He kept his eyes on Aub's as he rose again. "Could have fooled me.." His words were sour, he found a dislike of Aub's company. "Technically we are." He silently refused a more detailed explanation.
"Couldve fooled me," Aub retorted back at him, this time turning the dazzling grin on Vhar. "And of course another. Do you think a Qu-"
Kali cut his off abruptly. "Enough Aubrey. I dont know why you felt the need to come here, but we can discuss that after we are out of this place." She glanced at Vhar, uncertain if hed follow after this 'mission', but that too, was for later. |
"I'm afraid I'll need that answer now, Kali." Vharrus's attention was glued to Aub as he spoke. He hardly even noticed Yul'mah running around the room chasing her new toy like a two year old. "That book is trouble, I'm afraid I can't let him walk out of here with it. It's bad enough that he's already begun reading it." His hand reached instinctively for his dagger, but he let it rest in it's sheath for the moment. He knew it unwise to draw on an opponent without any knowledge of their strengths. "That book most likely contains knowledge not seen since my people perished. It would not be wise to unleash it on this world now." Vharrus shot Yul'mah a look, and she reluctantly picked up her bauble and returned to his side; she carefully placed herself between Vharrus and Kali.
Aubrey blinked at Vharrus, stunned amusement in his gaze. "You think I-" he broke off, chuckling, and tossed the book at Kali. "I assure you itd be safer with me than, ah, Kali here."
Kit eyed Aub with a dangerous glint in her eyes, as she snatched the book from the air. "Grandpa here," aub looked affronted at the jab to his age, "is a vampyre with a mangled idea of decency." |
"Mangled may be an understatement." Vharrus shocked himself even, openly poking at someone he did not know well was unlike him, but Aub's presence was an annoyance. In this case, he decided the truth was best. "I might stand a chance at taking it from her though." He wasn't fond of admitting he was weaker than anyone but he was somewhat aware of the power of vampyres due mostly to the stories of his people. He hadn't, until this moment, considered the possibility that they actually existed however. If the stories held true he may not even be able to take the book from Kali. "Our business here is done. Kali has her book, I have my trophy, and you.." He merely shrugged and look to Kali. "Shall we go?"
Aub gave a light laugh at Vhar's supposing he could remove anything from Kali, but this time said nothing except to indicate the pair of dragon kits. "What are their names?" He inquired, his tone edging a bit more towards polite. While Kit despised the breed as a whole, Aub, for his part, loved them. On top of that, these two were something he hadnt seen before. It was a lot of work to bring back an immortal..
Kit dropped her hands to her sides, and strode past Aub with a faint huff. She didnt appreciate being followed, and wondered what the cause might be. She let that slide for now, and instead enjoyed a moments thought of giving the impudent man a sound beating. |
Vharrus followed Kali as she passed Aub, subconsciously attached to her hip. He kept his eyes forward as he spoke. "The one you gave the object to is Yul'mah, the other is Yul'dur." Yul'dur promptly strode from the dark passage they had just traveled down and took Vharrus's heel opposite Yul'mah. "Tell me, Kali, would we stand a chance if we tried roughing him up a little? I don't like him." His tone was indifferent, a difficult task for him in that moment. He was sure she wouldn't allow it, but he couldn't help but ask. "I've heard stories of your people. I never played with the idea that the stories were real. Suffice it to say that things just got more interesting." Vharrus motioned for Kali to take the lead.
"He has that affect on most people.. I think he enjoys being taken for a fool."
Aubrey trailed them both, planting himself in line with the two dragons. "I heard that, oh moon of my heart," he chimed in from behind them, his voice full of laughter. Kit grimaced, but she answered both Vhars question and taunted Aub in the same statement. "I doubt he could stop the pair of us from doing some damage.. after all, he's so old hi'd probably break a hip trying." She smiled at the image. Aub broke in again, grouching, "id like to see you try it children." Then, a bit thoughtfully, he added, "And shes not of my kind. Kali as you call her, is simply fun to bother. No familial relation." |
"He's a bit childish for a grandpa." Vharrus was not familiar with insulting people, preferring to simply kill those who tempt him, but this time he thought the better of it. Insults would have to do, for now. Yul'mah on the other hand seemed to love her new friend. She fell behind and walked backwards, and even without eyes one could easily tell she was staring at him playfully. "The image of him breaking a hip is certainly appealing. Am I a bad person for hoping he'll fall down a long set of stairs?" Vharrus made it a point to ignore the information Aub had given him. "Tell me, Kali, what is your relation to this old fool?" A sincere curiosity permeated the air around him, his bones responding by attempting once again to break free of their restraints.
Aubrey lapsed into silence, instead turning his attention on the kit in front of him. He didnt have much in the way of showy magic, but he'd dabbled.. tiny balls of light, like the one thatd been bouncing off the gaurds head, appeared around his fingers. He flicked one at Yul'mah, an inviting smile on his face.
Kali sighed. "Unfortunately hes a very old ally of mine.. and despite appearances, his subjects are loyal to him, a useful thing during wartime." |
