- The Story -
Rayeth leaned against the windowsill, staring out at the city streets in silence. It had been nearly two weeks since his escape from Abel, and since the dragon had carried a small group away from the Zealot leader. It had been disastrous. The male scowled as he recalled the events, becoming frustrated again. They'd lost the blind boy. Byron and her primate friend were still around, both of them recovering from a cold that lingered. Alchemy, though. She was in a coma. She hadn't woken since that day. Rayeth's crystal blue eyes flickered across the room. They darted over the blonde girl's pale features and weakened form. If she didn't wake soon, there was no hope for her. The dragon guiltily looked back out to the streets. He watched the drizzling rain for a while, trying to push back his emotion. He shouldn't have flown over the harbor. Rayeth had been trying to get to the other side of the docks as quickly as possible - the only thing he'd thought of was distance from Abel. He'd realized too late that distance meant nothing to the Zealot - the heartstone that held the link to Rayeth's heart could reach as far as he needed it to. Honestly, he'd avoided staying in the doctor's home with Alchemy. Rayeth wasn't sure if Abel could track him through the stone or not, but if he could ... he would find Alchemy and finish the job. Then again, no one had heard from the Zealot in days. Perhaps he'd moved on? No. That was too much to hope for. Blue eyes moved back to Alchemy. His mental voice nudged her mind, as he'd done with Byron many times before. "Wake up, girl." The words were as soft as he could make them, but were closer to a grating of stone that a gentle whisper. Rayeth wasn't good at carefully entering the minds of others. That was why he came here. The dragon came to the doctor's home with the hopes of being able to rouse Alchemy from her sleep state. As of yet, there were no results. Rayeth pushed himself from the window wearily, taking the chair that he'd drawn closer to the bed weeks prior. His unblinking gaze moved over the girl again before stopping on the rise and fall of her chest. He could hardly see it. Closing his eyes, the dragon let out a sigh and reached up to rub his face. He had been hoping against hope that she would survive. At least then he would have saved more than one out of the three he'd carried with him. "Please, girl. Open your eyes." Perhaps it was time to leave. Perhaps ... he wouldn't return. This child was so weak, and showed no signs of waking. He couldn't keep returning here. Rayeth leaned back in his chair thoughtfully, looking uncomfortable. How long could he struggle with the choice to return? |
'Wake up'
Out of the five senses sound came before feeling. Nothing much and at the same time loud enough to drag her out of the darkness she hadn’t even realized had overwhelmed her. It started as a faint buzzing, never changing. It was soothing in a concerning way. A way that pulled her back into the darkness, something deep and instinctual told her that she shouldn’t go. It made it too hard to think and that was wrong. The buzzing grew louder then softer again. There were pauses, breaks in the sound. Words were hidden under the buzz. Blood and death and lucky. There was voice, a man tucked in under that constant sound. The buzzing was fading into recognizable sounds. Not just voice of the man but birds and boots on wood floors. Quicker than sound feeling rushed her body in waves one right after the other. She could feel it start in her legs- a burn that turned into a crushing pressure- and traveled up till it vibrated in her skull. As another wave wrecked through her she became aware of a constant pain that had settled in different parts along her arms and legs. Her back was almost completely numb which stood in contrast to the pain that had taken home in her head. Sound and taste came back to her like twins. The smell of tang and metal in the air matched the taste that danced along her tongue. It was a battle to crack open her eyes and regain control of sight. The glow made her wish she hadn’t even tried. The pain that had rooted inside her skull focused in on the area right behind her eyes.. The pounding continued with a vengeance. In the orange glow that slipped between her cracked lids. Shadows obscured the light though that could simply be vision failing her again. A groan formed in her throat coming out as soft whimper. Now that the pounding was easing up and the waves of pain were settling it became easier to pin point the pain. Namely her throat and her chest. The former had a tightness to her that made every in take of breath ache. It was the fire in her throat that drew most of her attention. " S..See..See'r" was barely rasped out as she moved one pale thin hand along the bed searching for his presence. |
Something changed. As Rayeth watched Alchemy's weak form, she changed. Her breathing pattern shifted, and her eyes began to move behind her eyelids. It was faint, but it was a good sign.
The dragon slowly leaned closer, listening to her heart carefully. Was it possible that his ears deceived him? Alchemy's pulse strengthened. Rayeth was patient as he stared at her, his gaze locked on the girl's face. He was pleased when she struggled to open her eyes. "Alchemy," he reached forward to touch her brow, frowning as he did so. No fever, which was a good sign. She was awake. Alchemy had woken. She wasn't dead. Relief rushed over him, and the male let out a huff of breath he hadn't known he'd been holding. Alchemy's soft whimper made the dragon's brow furrow once again. He reached for Alchemy's hand as she searched for her friend, but said nothing. Rayeth merely let his cold hand take hold of the girl's. Let her wake a bit more, and then she would need to try and eat, or at least drink some water. The blond male continued to stare at her for a moment before speaking. "You're awake. We thought you would never open your eyes again, girl." |
There was something off about the voice. The soothing under tone was missing and when had See'r's voice had that gravelly quality to it? It was male she could tell that but his words weren't registering. The hand felt off as well. Too cold and long to be See'r. Her body still ached and she couldn't grasp onto the memory that would help tell her why she ached all over. He never worked her over this good.
It took some time but her pain filled mind finally wrapped around the words the man was saying.Trying to pull in a breathe to force the pain behind her eyes down. It was still hard to keep her eyes open more then cracks. "What..." there was still that fire burning down her throat. "What happened?" |
Rayeth was patient - forcibly so - as Alchemy slowly began to shift. She was trying so hard to respond. Blue eyes searched the girl's face as she struggled, his features neutral. Poor thing.
"We escaped Abel," he said quietly. Most of us, anyway. Rayeth knew that Alchemy wouldn't be able to take in much information. He wasn't cruel enough to flood her with the details, either. The dragon tried to keep his tone quiet, knowing that the blonde girl was feeling the input of sound and sight for the first time in weeks. "You've been healing." Though not quickly. Rayeth's slit pupils narrowed as he took in the weak form before him once again. She'd been bandaged and cared for well by the doctor, but Alchemy's body hadn't been healing quickly. Apparently she wasn't fighting for life. Now that she was awake, however, the tides might change. "We were beginning to think you would never awaken." How to call for the doctor? Rayeth considered cooling the house, but that would require putting undue stress upon Alchemy's already weak form. No. He'd fetch the doctor when necessary. "Don't push yourself, girl. Wake up, then we can talk." The dragon's cool hand pulled away from Alchemy's, and rested again on her brow. Rayeth stood, and moments later the light in the room was dimmed further. Unsure of what else to say, the tall male sat beside the bed once again, staring at the young Outlaw in silence. When he did speak, it wasn't intended as a conversational piece. "You have her eyes, youngling." Rayeth quietly glanced to the door once again, wondering if now was the time to retrieve the doctor. He nodded to himself, and left quietly. It wasn't long before his intrusive presence warned the doctor that Alchemy had finally woken after two weeks of being trapped in between life and death. ((IDEA randomly. What if Rayeth knew her parents? >___> I don't recall her parents ever really being around ... not sure why. They could easily have helped Rayeth at some point, though!)) |
" Don't fret Abigail It's very common for women in this stage of pregnancy to be so tired." Lyle rested a hand on the bump of the woman's stomach. It was her first and the doctor understood her worry. As far as he could tell her pregnancy was going just fine.
It was a pleasant relief to the young woman upstairs who had yet to awaken. He had done all he could to save Alchemy. Hours of surgery trying to close her wounds while replenishing her blood. The poor thing had lost so much that even if she made it through with out catching an infection he wasn't sure she would make it. She was weak as it was. Still he had kept his worries away from Rayeth. The man had been by every so often to check on her but she condition hadn't changed in all that time. The blond man, who Lyle hadn't got much out of, was up there with her right now. Smiling as the expecting mother said her thanks and left Lyle busied himself cleaning up. He would go and check on his other patient soon enough but he felt it was right to give him some time with the girl. |
Rayeth silently watched as Lyle cleaned up. The doctor was keeping himself busy. Blue eyes followed the male's every movement, and for a moment the dragon went unnoticed ... until he spoke. His deep voice was always startling. You either saw Rayeth and couldn't ignore his intrusive demeanor, or he went completely unseen. Strange how it happened that way, really.
"She's awake." The dragon spoke suddenly, his unblinking gaze on the doctor. It was the first thing Rayeth had said to Lyle in a week. They never truly discussed what had happened that night. With a huff of breath, the dragon looked impatient. "I can smell your relief. You're surprised." Rayeth knew that Lyle hadn't expected Alchemy to live. He knew quite a few things, really. He could scent things that most people would think strange. It was most certainly his dragon nature. "She needs you." Rayeth looked impatient again, his scowl darkening. His meaning was clear: Move, doctor. |
"Oh" Shocked rippled though the doctor at the blonde man's words. He had had others who suffered similar conditions to the girl- of course those all were the cause of accidents and not what ever torture the poor young thing had gone through. Their loved ones would claim every time that the patient had moved, or spoken. More often then not it was a reflex of the nerves before they passed. Some times simple wishful thinking on a relatives part.
Rayeth did not come off as a grieving family member. In fact Lyle still didn't know his relation to the girl. The girl, Alchemy, who had apparently woken up. [B]" Right...Yes.."[/B Setting down the rag he had been using to wipe down the table and replacing it with the medical bag he kept on hand the dark haired doctor turned for the stairs. " Will you get her a glass of water? The pitcher should be in the back room." The top floor of the building was a simple hallway with four rooms on each side. He had placed Alchemy in the back room on the right. Whoever had left the girl who looked barely out of her teens like that then it was best to keep the girl a secret. There was not much security to the building other then the fact that he lived in one of the back room on the bottom floor. Pushing open the door he was the blonde girl struggling to sit up. She really had pulled through. --- The pounding lessened with the fading of the light but the burning still ran down her throat and the ache in her chest was steady. Vision came and went but never really focused. It was a fight to keep her eyes open, on e that she lost. Her muscles protested much movement but focusing on sitting up was helping keep the memory of just why she was in so much pain away. And some instinct was fighting against remembering. The man, who she didn't know but knew she had heard his voice somewhere, had said they escaped Abel. Which would explain why she wasn't dead. Another wave of pain knocked to thoughts from her head and the little process she had made in sitting up was a for not. He chest felt like it was exploding. " Now now dear you shouldn't be moving." A voice, different man, came from what she assumed was the door way. Then soft hand were placed on her forehead and under her shoulder blade. " You need to stay laying down till you get your strength back." To enforce hie words Lyle eased her down. It looked like was was getting close to pulling the stitches in her chest. " I...I..Ah" She went to ask the second person to speak with her where her silver haired friend was. HE had to know she was alive, it was a driving thought. " Your friend Rayeth will be up soon with some water for your throat." |
