When Leane walked into her room, Joanna and Jenny were already getting the finishing touches on their makeup and hair.
Smiling at the girls, Leane put her purse down on her bed, "The ballroom looks gorgeous, girls. You and Josh did it perfectly." Jenny grinned as the stylists were through with her and ran over to Leane, "I'm glad you like it! We tried our best to do it as you envisioned." When Joanna had finished, she too rushed over to Leane, "What do you think? Do we look alright?" Leane smiled, "Of course you two! You both look like porcelain dolls, you're adorable." Jenny sighed, "Yeah, but I wish I had your curves. Your gown is going to look perfect on you, mine looks awkward." "Nonsense! You look gorgeous!" exclaimed Joanna. Leane nodded in agreement, "You really do." Joanna, noticing that Leane couldn't stop smiling, eyed her, "Okay, spill. What happened at detention that's gotten you so giggly and smiley?" Leane bit her lower lip as she brushed them off and headed over to the hair and makeup artists, who were getting instructions from Paolo and Georjiano, "Why whatever do you mean?" "You know exactly what I mean, Lee, now spill!" said Joanna as she sat beside Leane. "Okay, now I'm definitely seeing it, what happened? Was Matt there?" added Jenny as she sat on the other side of Leane. Leane blushed as she bit her lower lip, still unable to quit smiling, "He was. He.. asked me to be his girlfriend.. and he.. kissed me.. and not just a light peck either.. it was long, tender, and absolutely perfectly amazing.." |
"What?!" Gena asked, noting how her voice had raised several octaves. "I mean-you and Leane Supton? What's happened to you? She's Leane Supton! You used to hate her and now you're all boyfriend and girlfriend." She said, the words tumbling out of her mouth as she walked out of the small closet.
"I don't see what the problem is." Matthew said, rolling his eyes. "I like her so I asked her to be my girlfriend." "But you hate her! You've always hated her!" Gena retorted angrily. "I'm leaving." She added, not waiting for an answer before turning on her heel and stomping up the stairs. "Gena! Wait up!" Jack called up the stairs, following her out of the house. |
As Paolo and Georjiano talked with the stylists about Leane's hair and makeup, Leane told Joanna and Jenny about detention and what happened after.
By the time they were finished talking about it and Leane's hair and makeup was finished, there was less than two hours until the ball. In this time, Leane dressed into her gown while Jenny and Joanna quickly changed into their gowns before meeting their dates in the hallway. Leane took the longest to get ready, Paolo and Georjiano helping her and adjusting things here and there. It was Georjiano who hooked Leane's necklace around her neck, the pearls and sapphire accenting her creamy skin and the lightness of the gown. Taking one last look in the mirror as she put her mask on while Paolo placed a small tiara upon her hair, Leane bit her lower lip, nervous of what Matt would think Paolo and Georjiano quickly shushed her fears as they led her to the staircase. Jenny, and her date Collin, as well as Joanna, and her date Jonathan, had already descended the staircase and had begun mingling with the students who were making their way into the Ballroom. The doors still shut, Leane took a deep breath and tried to clear her nerves. It was 8:20pm, and Leane couldn't have been more nervous to walk into that room. |
Matthew piled into his car with Ben who'd changed quickly after he had. "Well that was dramatic." Ben said as they settled into Matthew's car and pulled out of the driveway.
"I didn't mean for Gena to get upset." Matthew sighed as he drove to Leane's house. "Well she can be a little over dramatic anyways." Ben shrugged as they pulled into Leane's driveway. "You should just worry about you and your lover girl tonight." Ben laughed as they got out of the car and walked into the ballroom. Matthew made his way to the staircase, where Jenny and Joanna had already descended, to wait for Leane's entrance. |
Even as Leane continued to blush, Paolo and Georjiano whispered words of confidence as they opened the door. Stepping through, Leane scanned the room, all eyes were on her. This made Leane even more nervous, especially when she saw Matthew. Standing up straight, Leane lightly picked up her gown's hem and descended the staircase.
|
Matthew watched as the crowd turned to the staircase. Following their gazes, Matthew turned to see Leane at the top of the staircase. She looked beautiful in her dress, the way it flowed around her. Matthew couldn't help but to smile as Leane began to walk down the stairs. Straightening up slightly, Matthew nodded to Leane when she reached the bottom of the stairs.
"You look beautiful." He said quietly when she was standing beside him. |
Leane blushed at his comment and began to fidget a bit. "You're rather handsome yourself," she returned quietly as she looked up at him, "Do you really think I look alright? It's not too much?"
|
"No, its not too much." Matthew assured her, taking one of her hands in his own. "You look gorgeous as usual." He smiled as the music began to play out of the speakers. "May I have this dance?" He asked with a wide grin, pulling Leane out to the dance floor with him and pulling her into his arms.
|
Leane blushed as she put one hand on his shoulder as felt his hand slink around her waist, pulling her towards him. As the music played a ballroom waltz, Leane gazed up at Matt as she whispered, "Everyone's staring at us..."
|
"Everyone's staring at you." Matthew corrected. "You look beautiful so its no wonder." He said as he started to dance, careful to not let his hand be placed to low on Leane's back. Stepping a little closer to her, Matthew smiled contentedly as he gazed downwards and into her eyes.
~-~-~ Gena scowled near the punch bowl where Justin hovered awkwardly, offering her a glass of punch. "No thank you." She sighed as she watched Matthew twirl around with Leane on the dance floor. "I need some air." She said quickly, rushing off to the gazebo outside and leaving Justin confused at the punch table. Gena fell down on the stairs of the gazebo as tears streamed from her eyes. "Gena?" She heard Jack's voice ask as he sat beside her. Gena fell into Jack's arms as she continued to sob. |
Joanna and Jenny, along with their dates, were the first couples to join Leane and Matt. For awhile, it was only those three couples dancing, all eyes not able to leave Leane and Matt - most wondering why in the world they seemed so touchy and so close, few thinking they looked cute together.
Leane didn't notice any of this, however, she was completely lost in his eyes. Blushing, Leane tried her best not to trip from her nervousness. Giving his hand a gentle squeeze, Leane couldn't help but smile up at him. "They're staring at us," she stated once more, "and trying to figure out how such an outcast could look so dashingly handsome. Not to mention the fact that we're not acting completely repulsed by the other, it's rather unnerving to them, don't you think?" she added in a whisper with a giggle as they dance. |
Matthew shrugged lightly as he held Leane close to him. "They're probably wondering why someone as beautiful as you is willing to dance with me." He answered. "And I certainly hope you aren't completely repulsed by me. It would make things very awkward, don't you think?" He joked.
~-~-~ "Don't cry." Jack soothed, placing his arms around Gena. "Its alright." "I was so blind!" Gena sobbed into his arms. "Why couldn't I see that he liked me?" She asked as the tears continued to flow down her cheeks. "Do you think it hurt like this for him?" She asked pathetically. "I think it was a little worse for him." Jack admitted, earning a fresh round of tears from Gena. "I was so awful to him." Gena sighed as the tears subsided. |
"That would be awkward," Leane couldn't help but laugh as she leaned in and placed a light kiss on his lips, "So it's a good thing I'm definitely not repulsed. I think once they've figured out we're together, their questions will be answered and they'll understand that I'm honestly attracted to you."
|
"Or they'll think that you've gone crazy for liking me." He laughed as the song came to an end.
~-~-~ "He'll forgive you." Jack assured her. "You've been friends for too long for him not to be able to forgive you." "I hope so. I was so mean to Leane. But honestly, Leane Supton? What does he see in her?" Gena sighed. "We'll find out soon enough. But I think you owe both of them an apology." Jack told her. Gena sighed, rolling her eyes. "I know, I know. But not tonight. Tonight I just want to leave." She admitted sheepishly. "I don't want anymore drama. It'll just make it harder for Matt to forgive me." "I'll take you home but someone needs to tell Justin." Jack laughed. |
Leane smiled as they stopped dancing, yet still remained in his arms, "Maybe I like being crazy."
Joanna and Jenny both exchanged looks as they separated from their partners. As they peered around, the noticed a few jocks getting hostile looks in their eyes already, but Leane didn't notice. As a faster song started playing, Leane blushed as she stammered, "M-may I have this d-dance?" Joanna and Jenny were soon asked by a couple of jocks to dance and they began dancing to the mambo, many other couples joining in and surrounding Leane and Matt, who were practically at the center of the ballroom floor. |
"Of course." Matthew smiled widely. "You can have every dance if you like." He added, grinning.
~-~-~ "Justin." Gena said quietly, returning to her date. Jack was pulling the car around. "I'm so sorry. I'm feeling sick and I think its best if I leave. I hope I can make it up to you." She said, speaking quickly. "Oh." Justin said, taken by surprise. "Of course, I'll get the car." "No, no." Gena said. "I don't want to make you leave. You should stay and have fun." She said with a smile. "Well I hope you feel better." Justin said, wrapping his arms around Gena in an awkward hug. "Thank you, Justin." Gena said. "And I'm sorry." She added before hurrying out the door and getting into Jack's car. |
Leane blushed as they began dancing, "Don't promise me that, Matthew Sommers, I may end up taking you up on that offer."
Josh, Paolo, and Georjiano all stood on the balcony and watched over the Ball, their eyes never leaving Matt and Leane as they danced. Josh couldn't help but laugh as he saw how close they seemed. Paolo and Georjiano both gushed together over how beautiful Leane looked and how handsome Matthew looked in his outfit. The three men watched over the Ball under the pretense of being chaperons but in reality, were just there to watch Leane and Matt and make sure the rest of the students didn't get physical over them two being together. All three men hoped Leane would remember this night forever as one of the best in her life, not as one of the worst. Time would only tell if their wish would come true, or if it would only heighten their fears. |
"I certainly hope you will." Matthew winked as they danced. "Its not as if I want to dance with any of the other girl's here."
~-~-~ "Thank you, Jack." Gena said as they pulled into her driveway. "I'm sorry I made you leave." "Don't worry about it." Jack said. "Balls aren't really my thing anyways. Just get some rest and in the morning you can work on getting Matt and Leane to forgive you." Gena sighed. "Right, but tonight I can mope and eat ice cream." She said with a smile. "You're such a girl." Jack teased. "Just don't do the whole trying to kill yourself from misery, alright?" "I'll try to restrain myself." Gena laughed as she got out of the car and went into her house. |
Leane laughed as they danced, "Ditto, in regards to the boys, I mean. Where'd you learn to ballroom dance anyway? I figured most of the unpopular kids would have no idea and would have to learn from watching us elite. I'm surprised you dance so well," she teased as he spun her around.
|
"My mother used to ballroom dance." He said, ignoring the jab about how 'elite' she was. "She thought it'd be good if I learned. I have to admit I never really thought I would ever use it. Props to my mom I guess." He said.
|
Leane chuckled softly, "Then I must thank your mother if I'm ever able to meet her. It's nice to be able to dance these with you. It's a much better change from having to dance with all of the 'suitable-men' my parents approve of and throw at me during their Galas. Their roaming hands are enough to make you scream in frustration. It's like you said about those at school, they only have one desire only, and it's not to get to know me. And now I'm rambling and sounding like an egotistical snob huh.."
Noticing his look, Leane blushed and looked down as they danced as she stammered, "L-looks like I am.. I-I'll shut up now.." |
"You only sound like an egotistical snob if I sound like an over-protective jerk for wanting to beat up the guys who've tried to put their hands all over you." Matthew laughed then became serious. "And don't try to argue that I do so you must be a snob. You're not." He said with a smile. "If I thought you were a snob I wouldn't be here right now."
|
As Matt spoke, the song came to a close and a jazzy Foxtrot came on. As they began dancing, Leane laughed, "Matt, I don't think you're an over-protective jerk for wanting to beat them up - I find it sweet. Stupid, but sweet just the same. And I'm very glad you're here.. Not just because you said it negates me being a snob, but simply because I like spending time with you.. and I hate to say it, but it kind of makes me happy to know that you kinda-sorta-maybe like spending time with me as well.."
|
"Kinda-sorta-maybe?" Matthew laughed, raising an eyebrow underneath his mask. "We need to work on your vocabulary, or self-esteem. I would use something more along the lines of 'enjoy spending time with you' or 'cherish spending time with you'." He teased.
|
Leane was thankful she was wearing a mask this evening, Matt was making her blush quite a bit tonight. Biting her lower lip nervously as they danced, Leane stammered softly, "I-I didn't think you-you'd feel that stro-strongly so soon.. And it's hard to have a high self-esteem around you! Around everyone else I'm so sure of myself, my actions, and everything I say! But with you? Geez, you make me so confused and make my head spin so much that I just.. I don't know what to think. I must say, it's rather unnerving, but I can't say I mind it too much since it's you who's putting me through it," she admitted softly with another blush.
