"Carol, this is how things are going to be for a while. You would do best to get used to it. Besides, the things your seeing aren't just beginning, this is an ancient war. People are dieing all over your world and mine. It's my hope to end that."
"I refuse to 'get used to it'. And how do you plan to stop it? You're just as twisted as the rest of them. You get your kicks from watching people suffer." She glared at him, her detest for him growing. The idea that his little pet had even suggested she would grow to like him was laughable.
"Only certain people. For example, your suffering isn't doing much for me. The angel's on the other hand... was music to my ears." He led her into the house after Annet, "Are you going to eat with us, or would you prefer to lie down for a while?"
She was starving, but she wasn't going to spend another minute with him and his demented sister. "I want to lay down. Well, no, actually I want to leave, but I suppose that's the next best thing."
((Aw, she's not demented.))
"Alright then, third door to the left down that hall. Do not wander, and do not leave the room until I come and get you." |
Biting back a sarcastic comment, she headed in that direction and slipped into the room. The idea of wandering just to spite him felt awfully tempting at the moment, but she took to amusing herself by examining the contents of the room instead.
The room was nothing fancy, a guest room. A small bed and dresser, a few trinkets.
Jin and Annet had their meal, and about an hour later he dished a plate and headed back o the room he'd sent her to. |
Carol was slumped over on the bed, fast asleep in a rather uncomfortable looking position. Her eyelids fluttered when he entered, but she didn't wake.
Jin set the plate on the nightstand and moved closer, looking her over. She was much prettier when she wasn't busy glaring at him. He pulled blanket from the closet and lightly rested it over her, deciding to let her get some sleep.
At the touch of the blanket, she murmured something and shifted, wrapping the blanket around herself. A small smile danced on her lips from her dream and she gave a soft sigh.
Jin smiled slightly before switching out the lights and closing the door.
"So she's the one you're going to use?" Annet asked, "She's perfect for it. And you like her too don't you." "I don't dislike her..." He said thoughtfully. |
About an hour later, Carol slowly and reluctantly woke. She sat up, yawned, and stretched, looking around in tired confusion. Unsteadily sliding out the bed, she wandered to the door. "We gonna go yet...?" She'd planned the words to come out as a call, so he'd hear it no matter where in the house he was, but it turned into a mumble and she frowned.
Jin appeared pretty quickly next to her, "Did you sleep well?" He asked softly, reaching out and tucking her hair behind her ear. "Annet has something for you, go talk to her and then we'll leave."
((I'm watching a movie, Lost Angel, and so far it's really good. o.o; )) |
"I guess..." She gave him a weird look, a bit disturbed by how gentle he was being. She wasn't sure if she preferred this or his normal attitude. The other one was definitely much less weird. "Um, okay...where is she?"
Jin seemed to shake out of it fairly quickly. "End of the hall, hurry up, it's getting late." He said gruffly as he headed the opposite direction.
She watched him walk away, a very confused look on her face. "That was weird..." She mumbled before turning and heading down the hall. She knocked on the last door she came to, not sure if she really wanted to see Annet or not. The angel scene still echoed in her mind, sending shivers down her spine.
Annet slid the door open, standing shakily on her own two feet, even with two metal supports running up the backs of her legs. She was dressed elegantly as usual, and she offered Carol a friendly smile. "It's so depressing, I've been a demon so long I can't remember how to act around humans anymore. Come in, have a seat, I have something for you." She said, gesturing to a chair before moving to a bookcase.
Carol did as told, looking around and feeling oddly uncultured compared to the room. "What's going on with your brother? He's being weird...Or is he just always like that and I haven't noticed yet?"
"He's... strange." She gave a small smile, "What did he do?" She asked, pulling out a massive book and setting it on a table.
"He was being all...nice." She stretched up, trying to see the cover of the book. "Then he was his usual stupid demon self and walked away. What's that?"
"He's not a total jerk. You just caught a glimpse of what's human in him." He said in a dreamy tone. "When one becomes a demon they slowly lose sight of themselves. It's difficult some people just accept it and become demons, others, like myself and my brother, cling to what humanity we have left. Jin's in the awkward position of holding a high rank however. Having anything to do with your humanity is not a thing to be proud of in the underworld, so he has to hide it well enough to get by without loosing it. It's given him sort of a split personality." She opened the book to reveal it as a fake, encasing a book that was well wrapped. "This is a bible, it used to be my grandmothers. I can't even touch it now, and its nothing terribly special to me. I figured I'd sell it, since it's now the oldest still remaining on the planet of it's kind. I thought it might interest you though. Consider it an apology, I didn't think you'd take the fight with the angel so hard." She pulled the wrapped book from the fake book box and slid it across the table. "It's been well preserved as well."
Surprise etched itself on every inch of Carol's face as she slowly unwrapped it. "Wait...you're giving this to me?" With the care of handling valuable china, she leafed through the pages, her eyes lighting up in wonder. "But..."
Confusion began settling in and she looked back at Annet. "I don't really understand...Why did you keep it?" It seemed the last place one would find a holy book was in a demon's personal library. "And...I don't think I even can...Jin told me I couldn't take my religious artifacts..." |
"I already spoke to him about it. Take a close look, you'll notice his right ear is still red." She said with a grin. "But yeah, I have no need for human money anymore, so it's useless to me."
She smiled. "Thank you..." Wrapping the book back up and standing, she asked, "Is that all...?"
"You still don't trust me... do you?" She said sadly, "But yes, that's all. Jin will be waiting for you."
