Neither the noise of Romeo colliding with the floor or the noise of the timer going off awoke him, if that said anything of how exhausted he was.
Romeo set the oven temperature on low. It was right under one hundred degrees when he put dinner back in it it keep it warm without overcooking it. He decided that if Gavin didn't wake up in about half an hour on his own then he would put the stuff in the fridge and save it for later. He went into his media room and started scanning the shelves for something he hadn't read yet. He pulled down a couple books and brought them both back with him. They were like polar opposites. One was a cake decorating book and the other was a science fiction book by Orson Scott Card, he wasn't quite sure what he wanted to read.
He was really more in the mood to watch a movie, but he didn't want to wake Gavin up and it offended his sense on chivalry to even think about leaving him in the living room by himself knowing that he could have another nightmare. He couldn't keep the TV quiet enough without putting subtitles on in the living room and he really didn't like subtitles during movies anyway. They distracted from all the little interesting things that the camera lense catches. He sat down, putting the books on the floor, and crossed his legs while resting his hands gently on his knees. He started meditating to get all the stress out of his system. |
A little while later, Gavin began to stir. It was a little uneasy, but not resembling a nightmare. Slowly, he pushed himself up onto his elbows, glancing tiredly around the room.
Romeo didn't move at all, still stuck inside his meditation, he heard everything though. Breaking his concentration just enough to let a smile quirk to his lips for just a fraction of a second, he opened his mouth to speak.
"Dinner is being kept warm in the oven if you're hungry. There's salad in the fridge too." |
"Right. Like I can easily access it," he said with a weak sigh. He struggled to move from the couch to his wheelchair and rolled himself down the hallway to go to the bathroom.
Romeo laughed and uncurled himself out of his meditation position like a great cat uncurling from a nap. He went into the kitchen and made up plates for both him and Gavin while he was occupied in the bathroom and had Gavin's sitting on a TV tray beside the couch with a glass of wine. He poured himself a glass and drank that without bothering to touch his dinner yet. He walked back to his media room and pulled five DVDs off the shelves to see if Gavin would humor him with watching a movie together with him once he got out. He sat on the floor and started on his dinner.
After several long minutes, Gavin emerged again, looking a bit disgruntled. "I forgot how much I had relied on steel bars back when I was in a wheelchair," he muttered, lifting himself out of the chair with his arms and onto the couch with hidden upper body strength. "At least I have one working leg this time. It helps, a lot."
"I can't tell if that last sentence was sarcastic or not. Outside from that... I've still got an old Lowes card that hasn't seen some love in a very long time. I got it when I first moved into this house and was buying enough building supplies to make those shelves in the media room. I'm sure if they don't have it already in stock I could custom order them." Romeo shrugged. "They know I'm good for the money. And I'm sure they'd direct me some place that DOES carry them if they can't custom order them." He suddenly remembered the salads and disappeared into the kitchen to retrieve them and six kinds of salad dressing.
"It wasn't sarcasm, I was serious. Having one leg to stand on makes it a lot easier than just being some paralyzed cripple. You don't have to worry about the steel bars. I'll be fine in a couple days. I've still got one leg that works," he said with a lopsided grin. "You don't have to alter your house for me."
"I'd still do it if you wanted me to. Even if it wasn't necessary." Romeo smiled back, a mix of amusement and sincerity on his face. "Remember what I said about anything you wanted or needed? All you ever have to do is ask. As long as it is within my power, it will be yours."
"It's fine. I should be able to walk again in about a month, right? Well, I'll be fine for that long. I still have one working leg, and it honestly makes it a lot easier. I'll be fine with it the way that it is."
"A month's not too bad. Hopefully by that time you'll be well enough to invite me in your room occasionally." He winked, letting a small smile touch his face to let Gavin know that he could take as much time as he needed before pouring the asian sesame dressing over his salad and eating it slowly, savoring the flavor of the sauce.
