I was a little worried about Tam for Icy's sake, but figured that he would come back eventually, and I went back to the chess game with Emmett, and I didn't notice that Icy was gone until after I had beaten Emmett. "Icy?" I asked, knowing that if she was just upstairs or right outside she would hear me. But no one answered, and I started to get worried. I knew that I needed to go home or mom and dad would get worried, so I told Alice to have Icy call me when she came back, and headed home.
When i came in the door, mom was on the phone. Again, she often was, talking to the police and FBI trying to find Icy. I sighed and made myself macaroni and cheese for dinner, scarfing it down so fast that I was done in under a minute. Then I went up to my room and got on the computer. |
I could not find his scent. I searched until sundown with no avail. He was gone. But how? I ran back to the Cullen's house, probably screaming Tam was gone in my head. Edward was there to open the door for me, so I did not have to stop. I fell onto the couch, heaving with burning eyes. This was crying to a vampire and it hurt. It was like crying hard as a human, but without the tears. Alice was by my side in a flash. "Whats up? You find Tam?" she asked, cradling me. I shook my head, still crying. I tried to tell her what had happened, but could not. Edward told her for me. "Tam's been kidnapped." he said, frowning. "Oh my." Alice said, holding me closer.
We talked about what to do. I wanted to go after Tam again, before the scent became too stale, but Carlise forbade it. "If it was really the Volturi, they would take you too. You have a unique power, Icy, they crave powers like yours." he said sternly. I still wanted to go after my boyfriend. "Why would have wanted him in the first place?" I asked. "It it because he can control music and sound?" I continued my previous question. Carlise and Esme nodded. Renesmee and Alice were on either side of me. Then Alice popped up. "Oh!" she said, digging into her pocket. "Riles told me to tell you to call her when you got home, but I got side-tracked. Call her before it gets too late." Alice said, handing me the cell phone. "Thanks, Alice." I said, taking the phone and dialing home. |
I was woken by the sound of my cell phone ringing. I wasn't actually allowed to have a cell phone, but I had bought myself one anyway, since Mom and Dad would get suspicious if I was talking on the phone all the time. Most people's parents might not get suspicious, but since i'd never been one to stay on the phone for very long, you get the point. I rolled over and pulled it out of my bedside table drawer before Mom or Dad heard it. "Hello?" I said quietly. It was Icy, good, she was back. "Where were you?" I asked, though I was pretty sure I knew the answer, out looking for Tam. "Is Tam alright?"
|
I had to remember that people could not see you when you talke don teh phone, for I shook my head in response to Rileanna's question about Tam. "No. Tam's not alright. We think the Volturi might have kidnapped him because of his power. I'm sorry for not calling earlier, I was just so worried about him! Carlise says I shouldn't go after them, but I just can't sit here!" I raved to my sister. Rileanna had always been kind and queit through my rants and raves and for that I was thankful.
|
I listened quietly and thoughtfully through Icy's rant, then decided that I could not, would not let her go alone. "If you're going after him then i'm coming! Besides, you could use an extra person along. or werewolf technically." I shrugged, and then yawned. I had been up late last night reading and doing homework. Icy heard m yawn and told me to go to sleep. Because I was so tired, I finally agreed after a few minutes of arguing. "G'night, let me know if you're going to go after Tam." I said before hanging up and falling asleep.
I was wandering in the the woods with Icy, searching. Icy was human and so was I, but we had absolutely no idea what we were supposed to be looking for, it was endless searching. I knew that we were searching for a person though, and between the two of us, we found a boy. He was also human. Then he started changing, screaming as he did so. Then Tam was gone. |
In a way, I missed sleeping. It was nice to get a break form reality for a bit. But I had no such luck since Ciaus. Stupid freaking vampire... I grumbled to myself about Ciaus. I was not in a very good mood. I went outside to the backyard of the Cullen's house, as not to spread my bad mood around. Rileanna had said she wanted me to take her with me if I went after Tam. I wanted to run off and find him right now. But of course, I could not.
The morning came. It was a nice, bright day today. I thought about what Tam might look like in the sun. I hoped he was okay. I wished he was okay. I picked up my cell phone and dialed Rileanna's cell. She did not pick up, so I left a message. "Hey, Riles, when you get this, go to the Cullen's house, follow my scent from the back yard and find me. I'm going after Tam." I said, and then snapped the cell shut. |
I had school today. I sighed, I really wasn't in the mood for it. In geography, i got my cell phone confiscated. It rang and the teacher, ofcourse, heard it and wouldn't let me answere it, I knew that it was Icy, and I aslo knew that she wouldn't call me during school hours unless it was an emergency. So I was extremely worked up about it until lunch when I snuck back into the classroom and snatched it off the desk. I had one new message. "Hey, Riles when you get this go to the Cullen's house and follow my scent, i'm going after Tam."
"Miss Zalen, where do you think you're going?!" The principal demanded as he saw me running off. "Tell my parents that I love them." Was my response, I didn't know when, or if, I would be coming back. |
I ran as fast as I could, which was very fast. I wanted to get to the clearing before to much of the scent dispersed. I knew I was probably setting myself up, but I had to now if Tam was okay.
I was standing in the clearing now, trying yet again to sort out the scents. Again, I had no luck. "Riles had better get here soon." I mumbled. I walked around the edge of the clearing, looking for signs of where they left, but found none. I then jumped up into the branches to search. Here I found some clues as to where Tam's kidnappers went. |
As soon as I was out of sight from the principal, I took off my clothes and tied them to my ankle. I knew that the principal would probably call my parents, but right now I didn't really care. Once a wolf I ran as fast as I could through the woods to the Cullen's house. Edward would probably hear my thoughts, but I didn't really care about that either, I had a head start anyway.
I followed Icy's scent until a came upon a clearing. I barked, knowing that if she was close by she would hear. I continued to sniff around, trying to find where Icy's scent had dissapeared, then I realized that it went up. Damn, that meant I would have to phase back to human. I couldn't climb without opposible thumbs. |
I heard Rileanna bark. I mentally noted where I was and ran lightly on the tree branches back to the clearing. "Riles!" I called, jumping down to the ground. I landed about fifteen feet away from her. "I found the path that Tam's kidnappers took. But I want to to use your nose to try to sniff out Tam. I couldn't find it." I said glumly. I stood back from Rileanna, as not to interrupted her tracking. "I'll keep following the trail that they left behind." I said jumping back into the trees and running off.
I came to yet another clearing, and here I saw the signs of a camp. The scents were more fresh, but still I could not tell one from another. I ran back to Rileanna with the news. |
I ended up not phasing, I heard Icy call to me and began to try and sniff out Tam. It was difficult, but I was pretty sure that I had it. When Icy came back with news that sh had found a camp with fresher scents, I phased and followed her to it. "Did you find Tam's scent?" I asked before phasing back and trying to sniff it out again. I was eventually able to figure out which scent was Tam's. I barked to Icy, inclining my head to where I had found Tam's scent.
|
"No, I just can't my nose around all the scents." I said to my sister. She then searched out Tam's scent here. She barked when she found it. I lit up. "Can you tell where they went?" I asked. As Rileanna went about that, I searched the treetops again. As I did, another scent came down to me. It was Seth's scent that the wind had carried to me. I jumped down to the ground and approached my sister. "Seth's coming," I told her. "He's probably a few minutes away." I said again. I knew that Rileanna probably did not ask Seth to come, just for the fact that she and I worked just fine by ourselves.
|
I nodded when Icy asked me if I could tell where they went, and started to head in that direction. I stopped when I was told that Seth was coming, and then I heard his thoughts. Seth! What are you doing? I thought, it would be better if he didn't come, if I died I didn't want him to die too. I'm coming to help you! I sighed. Fine. I thought rolling my eyes and sighing again, oh well maybe he could actually help us. When Seht reached us, I nudged him and then caught him up on what had happened so far. Then inclined my head and barked for them to follow me. We followe Tam's scent for hours, and in a couple spots it faded away and we had to find it again, which was quite confusing. I mean, why would it fade away?
|
I followed Rileanna in the trees, following the physical occasional path of Tam's kidnappers. A couple times, Rileanna lost the scent, which was odd. I guessed that they might have jumped up into the trees for it was those times that there was the most evidence that they were in the trees.
We had been following the scent for a long long time when Rileanna and Seth both stopped. "What?" I asked. Seth answered me first. "Jacob found us." he mumbled. |
Stop. I heard Jacob command. Why was he following us?! Well crap, this was a complication. It would take him atleast a day to reach us and we had to wait for him. It was the alpha's command. Seth and I skidded to a halt. When Icy asked us why, I phased and explained to her that Jacob was coming to look after Seth since his sister would turn Jacob into kibble if anyting happened to Seth under his watch. It was stupid, but still true.
"Well, I suppose you could go on ahead Icy, but Seth and I have to stay here until Jacob comes." I made a face, I hoped that she would stay here with us, I was afraid that if she encountered the Volturi alone then she would be kidnapped, just like Tam. |
I thought it over for a minute. "I think I'll go on ahead. I'll be close, just because I can't smell Tam's scent if I move to fast." I said, watching as Rileanna's face went dim. I smiled "If you need me, howl. And if I need help, I'll scream. Really loud." I told her. Then I was off.
It took me about ten minutes to find Tam's scent past where Rileanna and Seth were waiting for Tam. I moved so slowly, it was almost painful. But I had to keep moving slowly if I wanted to stay with the scent. The sun had set quite a while ago. I was still moving at a snail's pace, keeping Tam's scent in my nose. The tracks were getting more dispersed now, and were harder to follow. "Damn freaking vampire." I mumbled, blaming Ciaus for everything. I could not believe it was his venom that flowed through me. I hated that fact to no end. Then the scent overwhelmed my nose again. It was not Tam's scent, but the scent of the many other vampires. I hoped Jacob would show up soon so I could have Rileanna by my side again... |
Seth and I waited for hours, though it seemed more like days to me, before Jacob showed up. He tried to persuade us both to go home, but we both refused, so he insisted on coming with us. So the three of us followed Icy's scent for a while, going at a fairly fast pace. You smell that? Seth asked, and I immediately knew what he was talking about. I was overwhelmed by a stench so strong i almost doubled over. It was more vampires, lots of them. I whined extremely quietly, for i figured that Icy would hear me since I assumed that she was up in a tree somewhere, because that's where her scent led, up a tree. I could phase and climn the tree, but as a human I was moer likely to be caught. If I was a wolf I could fight. But if I was a human and I was caught off gaurd, it would be difficult to phase while being held in a vampires arms.
|
I heard Rileanna whine and quickly ran to find her. The scents now went in thirty five different directions, so I assumed that there was at least thrity five vampires here. I jumped down a few few in front of Rileanna. "They've run off in multiple directions. I still can't tell Tam's scent from the rest." I hung my head. I wanted Tam by my side and safe right now! But of course, I could not.
After hours of searching, I heard something. It was not a animal or a person, but a tune. I recognized that tune! It was the tune from my first dream that Tam was in. "Do you three hear that?" I asked in a hushed voice, not wanting to loose that faint sound. |
Thirty five vampires?!! Damn, that was a lot! Wow, how the hell were we supposeed to fight them off and rescue Tam if there were thirty five of them? Before, I had been prepared to fight, from what I knew, the volturi was only made up of three people, one of which was dead, I'd had absolutely no idea that there were more than that! As I was puzzling over that, I suddenly heard music
The others did too. "Do you three heat that?" Icy asked. I nodded as did Seth and Jacob, and I wondered what it was. I knew that Tam had the ability to control music, so I thought that maybe he was somewhere close by. Why don't we follow the music, see if we can find it's source. I thought, and Jacob and Seth nodded, I nudged Icy and nodded to where the sound of the music was coming from, then started running toward it. |
I understood what Rileanna had wanted to tell me with her nudge and jumped into the trees to folow the three huge wolves. We ran for another hour or so when a gush of wind brought three new scents into my nose from behind us. I did not know for sure, but it smelled like Renesmee, Bella and Edward. I stopped Jacob, for Renesmee was his imprinted. "Jake," I started. The music was still faint. "Nessie's coming with her parents I think...." I said, pointing in that direction. He came to a full stop and sniffed the air. He barked quietly. Rileanna and Seth stopped too, probably hearing Jacob's thoughts.
About another hour later, Renesmee, Bella and Edward came through the trees. "Jacob!" Renesmee called and ran towards the large werewolf. Bella and Edward came towards us more slowly. I knew I was going to get screamed at now. They had told me not to go out after Tam, but I could not just stay and wait for him to come back in pieces! |
"Jake, Nessie's coming with her parents I think..." Icy said, pointing in the direction from which she seemed to have smelled their scents. Now that I concentrated, I was able to smell them slightly. Why did everyone keep coming after us?! First Seth, then Jacob, now Nessie, Edward and Bella! NO, Jacob thought. Keep Nessie home! He growled, aggravated and worried. Jake, chill. Seth thought, and I rolled my eyes. Why, why did the bloodsucker let her come? Jacob thought again, and I figured that the "bloodsucker" was Edward. Ahem, I'd prefer if you not refer to them as bloodsuckers. I thought, growling at Jacob. Kind of offeneded that he'd used that term.
"Jacob!" Renesmee called, running towards him. |
Edward no doubt had heard my thoughts by now, and I sat, waiting for the yells of disapproval. But I got no such thing. In fact, Edward looked pleased. Now that confused me. "I told you she'd go after him no matter what," Edward told Bella. Bella sigh and gave me a small smile.
I explained what had previously happened, and where we were heading now. Renesmee, Edward and Bella all had heard the soft music too, so we were all on the same track. With everything sorted out, we headed off again. I felt safer now with Bella. She could protect us from whatever mental attacks our enemies had for us. The music slowly got louder and louder, but we were still much to far away to be close. I wanted to quicken my pace, but of course, if I moved to fast, I would loose all sound. This did not happen to any of the other vampires in the Cullen family. I wondered why it happened to me. Maybe, because I have control over ice, an extra power, I lost some of my other more normal vampire abilities. It would make sense. Sort of. |
I wondered why Edward hadn't yelled at Icy yet, "Told you she'd go after him no matter what." He'd said to Bella, which confused me even more. Why wasn't he mad? I knew he could hear my thoughts, but he wasn't interfering right now, which was nice, but honestly I was curious, and I couldn't talk in my wolf form. My thoughts were intereupted then. Riles, forget about it , we have an even more important situation right now. It was Jacob, of course, though I supposed he was right. I looked over at Icy, then I took off towards the direction of the music, and waited for the vampires to catch up. My mind trailed off again, what the hell was I supposed to do about Mom and Dad, when, or if, I did come back, they would be furious. I'd dissapeared before, and knew that they would be even madder this time. I sighed, maybe I would have to pretend to go to some school across the country or something. But I'd have to fake a scholarship first, I knew Mom and Dad couldn't afford something like that anyway.
|
We ran and ran and ran. The music became louder and I was thankful. Hopefully, it was not a trap. Renesmee rode on Jacob's back and Edward and Bella ran in the treetops not to far away form me. I was still confused as to why Edward was not mad. Maybe he had also wanted to got after Tam, and just needed an excuse. And why Bella had not said anything, she was always with Edward on everything.
The horrid scent of the thirty-some vampires once again came into my nose. I stopped, knowing that everyone else would have smelled it too. I hoped that they could not smell us over their own scent, that would make a lot of thing better. The tune continued over and over again, it was a sad, desperate tune and I had to try really hard not to start crying right there. I tried to peer as stealthily as I could through the tree branches to the clearing Tam was held in. There were forty vampires, all just talking and gossiping, hardly ware of our being there. Tam was held by five of them in the middled, with seven vampires lazily guarding those. I was sure that they also could here the tune Tam was sending out, but either I was wrong, or they just ignored it. |
After a while the music started getting louder, I slowed my pace ever so slightly, afraid that whoever was holding Tam hostage couldn't smell us. As we continued to run, the volume of the music icreased, as did the scent of a large group of vampires. I wrinkled my nose, twas a very gross smell. The music was a sad sort of tune, and it made me kind of depressed. Which was odd, because I rarely ever felt like that. Suddenly the scent of vampires was overwhelming, I peered through the trees, gagging. There was Tam, gaured by twelve vampires, though there were about forty total, not including Tam. They were all sitting around, obviously not aware that they were being watched. What do we do? Seth asked, but I wasn't sure who he was asking. I don't know, there's too many of them to attack, I was thinking strategically now, but if we could get them divided... I saw Seth cringe, and I realized it was the idea of me fighting against all these mature vampires. I shot him a look. I can fend for myself perfectly fine thank you very much. I thought, though I wasn't quite as sure of that as I sounded.
