The rain thundered down, beating the soggy ground into submission. Rivulets of water ran around rocks and grass, merging into a muddy torrent that was once the road. The air appeared silver with the gleam of the rushing rain, making a noise like falling snake scales. Lightning lit up the sky, and was reprimanded by rumbling thunder.

Despite the violence of the weather, the tree stood tall and strong. Its trunk was bent and twisted with age, but solid and unshakable, like a kneeling warrior. Its black branches spread out in the sky like a web, each bearing many fat green leaves. Water splattered against them, and they shook and danced in the cascade. A fat drop, swollen by rivulets it had rolled past and absorbed, hung for a moment on the edge of a broad leaf. The light from a crack of lightning illuminated it, catching a shine on the glassy surface. Finally, it broke away from the leaf, and sped down to earth, gathering speed.

"Ow."

Onua raised her hand to her head, rubbing the spot where the fat drop had hit her. Her long dull turquoise hair was already soaked, falling in snakey tendrils around her slightly reptilian face and shoulders. She had stripped down, removing her light clothing, in order to let her skin breathe in the soaking air. She was very pale, like the belly of a winter fish, but the occasional burst of lightning caused the blue and teal scales on her arms and legs to shimmer. She ran her webbed fingers along the rough bark of the tree, tracing the path of a stray raindrop as it moved slowly towards the ground. Onua loved the rain. She only felt comfortable on land when the air was full of water.

Tum te tum te tum...won't someone come?

Firemare 07-23-2009 07:41 PM

(Holmes!) but no skeleton post for me!

The hooded figure dashed towards the tree, though the hood and cloak offered some protection, it was not nearly enough. Just when it reached the tree there was another flash of lightning and a deafening crack of thunder that caused the figure to jolt sudden, catching it's foot in one of the spreading root and sending it tumbling to the ground. The figure swore once before getting a mouthful of mud. Coughing and sputtering the figure sat back on it's heels and pushed off it's hood, revealing a feminine human with blue eyes and tightly braided blonde hair. She stood and swore again before trying unsuccesfully to brush off some of the mud. Glancing up she caught sight of something, or someone, glowing almost irridescent it the intermittent light and swallowed tightly before flipping her hood back up and cautiously speaking "Greetings to you. Sorry about my entrance, that was certainly not the most graceful thing I've ever done."

Devilfern 07-23-2009 07:47 PM

Onua's reptilian eyes flicked to the newcomer. She hastily pulled on her clothing, noticing the discomforting feeling she always got when cloth touched her skin. She remained, however, silent, her round eyes watching the young woman with a strange intensity. Her mouth was not very well suited to human speech - with an effort she could speak passably, but she missed the hissing tones that she and her brethren used to whisper to each other to, under the still waters of a dark lake or pond.

Firemare 07-23-2009 07:54 PM

The woman spit out the last traces of mud and pulled a pouch from under her cloak, uncapping it and taking a pull. The woman sighed with satisfaction before turning back to her erstwhile company and offering the pouch. "So what journey brings you here at this time of day and in this weather? Since we seem to be stuck here until the lightning at least abates, we may at least make the time pass more lightly."

Devilfern 07-23-2009 08:16 PM

Onua stared at the pouch, but didn't move to take it. "I like to be on land when it rains." She pulled herself up into a more comfortable position. She was having trouble getting accustomed to legs.

Suddenly Onua reached out and touched the fabric of the blonde girl's sleeve. "This is leather?" She asked, withdrawing her webbed hand. She'd had some experience with humans - but not a lot. She was curious.

Firemare 07-23-2009 08:27 PM

The woman nodded and took another pull on the pouch before capping it and returning it to the inside of her cloak. "Yes, and good leather at that, though I'll need to clean it after this." The woman moved to lean against the tree and gave a half salute to her companion. "I'm Lore. I was trying to make it to the next town when I got caught in..." she gestured to where it was still pouring outside vaguely "...this. If I may ask, What are you exactly?"

Devilfern 07-24-2009 04:11 PM

"Lore." Onua repeated, trying to mimick the shape of Lore's mouth when she had said it. She liked it - it was so different from the names she knew that it was interesting. She was suddenly curious about her companion.

"I am an undine," Onua said slowly. "My name is Onua. My people like to stay underwater...mostly they don't like humans." Onua sighed, "I get bored...I wanted to meet some humans." She blinked at Lore. "You are a human. Will you tell me about yourself?"

Firemare 07-24-2009 06:30 PM

Lore chuckled "Boredom, the great universal motivator. I don't have a whole lot to tell. I was born in a military family, mother was a healer, father a fighter. I'm a bit of both. I enlisted as soon as I was able, and have been in the service ever since. I started as a fighter, but I took too many hits. After several months in the hospice I was reassigned to the runners. I deliver messages now. Military, personal, whoever can afford my price." She shrugged. "It keeps me fed and clothed, and I'm good at it. What about you?"

Devilfern 07-25-2009 05:14 PM

Onua watched Lore's face as she spoke, taking in her rapid speech with ears that only partially understood. But she was eager to learn. She tried to settle more comfortably on the root that had become her perch. The cool bark felt good against her skin, but its rough texture was uncomfortable.

"A human came to the pond where I was living...he wanted a sword that had sunk down. I got it for him, but he was too scared of me and ran away. That made me curious." Onua sighed. "I was lonely. Once an undine is old enough to live on its own it has to find it's own home. There aren't many of us, but we're territorial. I realized, though, that there's a lot more to explore on land than there is underwater. So I try to come out, when I can."

Firemare 07-25-2009 11:08 PM

Lore pondered that for a moment. "You aren't all that frightening, surprising maybe, but not frightening. How long can you stay out of water? I mean, you are a spirit after all, so surely not too long."

Devilfern 07-26-2009 12:43 AM

Onua grinned. "As long as I like...provided the weather's like this. And it was a long time ago, the young man. I was a lot younger, and very few people knew about us. Even fewer," Onua stretched her long fingered webbed hands "than do today."

The rain was still pounding out its tattoo on the leaves and rocks. The air was so thick with rain it was impossible to see farther out than a few feet from the tree. Onua's eyes, in any case, were not meant for seeing through air. She was having to blink a lot, which was new to her, and she kept forgetting to do it.

Onua smiled at the rain and turned back to Lore. "Legs, though, legs are fun." She examined hers for a moment. "I usually don't wear them. I've seen people running and dancing - it looks like fun. But I don't know how. Maybe soon I should go out and try." Onua looked pensive.

Firemare 07-26-2009 01:09 AM

Lore flipped back her hood and grinned. "Now there," she said "I can help you. I'm not the greatest dancer, but I can run like the dickens. I'd rather not run in this weather, but I can. If you're willing to come along with me I can teach you to run on my way to the next town. I'm sure there's someone there who can help you to dance." She reached under her cloak again and pulled out the now familiar pouch and drank from it. "What d'ya say, up for a bit of excersize?"

Devilfern 07-26-2009 04:16 PM

Onua's wide mouth stretched farther into a smile. She looked out at the rain, and the sky rumbled a warning to her. How long was the rain going to last? On the one hand, it was bothering Lore. Humans apparently didn't like the rain. On the other hand, it was a great contributing factor to keeping her on land...but perhaps there would still be enough moisture in the air after the rain ceased to fall.

"I'd like that. The rain...we can still travel?"

Firemare 07-26-2009 04:31 PM

Lore shrugged, "For a while. It'll be dark soon, and it's too dangerous to run when you can't see where you're going. I'll have to stop then, but the rain is more of an annoyance then a danger. The lightning could be dangerous however, but it sounds like it's moving off. So yeah, in my professional opinion we can go." Lore flipped her hood back up and stepped outside into the rain, letting it clean the remaining mud off of her. She turned back to Onua and beckoned her out. "Running is simple enough..."

Devilfern 07-26-2009 08:34 PM

Onua followed quickly, careful not to catch her feet or slip in the mud. Once she was out of the protection of the branches, the rain hit her like tiny hammers. Her hair immediately flattened and fell into her eyes. She brushed it calmly away, giving a quick view of the ribbed gills on her throat. They wiggled a little in the water-filled air.

Onua looked down at her legs and then back up at Lore. "I'm ready."

Firemare 07-26-2009 09:18 PM

Lore chuckled. "Well, to run you move faster then a walk and with longer strides. For me it's basically instinct by now, but you might find it more difficult at first. Try to think of it like a searies of leaps almost. Watch." Lore ran a few steps before turning to look back. The rain was intense and made the ground slippery, so they would have to be careful about where they stepped.

Devilfern 07-27-2009 04:05 PM

Onua watched Lore carefully, trying to imagine her own legs going through the same motions. Once Lore had turned back again, Onua squared herself up and gave it a try. She was taking Lore's advice to heart, so her run was a bit like...hopping. She paused and made a face. "That didn't feel right." She said.

Rabbit Embassy 07-28-2009 04:40 AM

The two young men dropped their load on a cart with a great crash. A gruff voice rose from within the rotting remains of an old palace. "Careful! It might not look old, but that there casket hasn't been moved in eons. It's old! We'll make quite a bit of coin from tha' old thing," a portly and rather scuzzy man stated. One of the young men lifted the tarp that covered the find, revealing silver vines wrapping themselves ornately along a dark, mahogany wood. No seam or latch could be seen. The thing looked solid, but the old man claimed it was a casket. The youth then pondered on the remains inside, but he was quickly swatted away. "Ready the horses! Ye'll not get yer gold if ye pick at the find." The old man grumbled as he began to chain the casket down.

The two black beasts thundered forward, their legs spattered in mud, their hooves spraying mud with each lound into the road. "Hyah!" The portly man growled as the whip cracked against their flanks. All three were soaked from the rain, and the youths were amazed the old merchant could see where he was going. At that moment, lightning shot down, striking the casket, breaking the restraints and sending it toppling to the muddy road. The three pushed the horses faster, not wanting to stop in the dreadful rain. The thing was probably destroyed anyway...

The silver vining glowed from the electricity it absorbed. The tarp flapped loosely, half of it still caught beneath the weight of loose chains.

Devilfern 07-29-2009 01:27 AM

Onua paused. That lightning had sounded awfully close. She stood with one newly acquired foot hovering in the air. She put it back down again, squishing into the mud, and turned to look at Lore. She said nothing, but there was curiosity in her eyes again.

Onua pulled her sopping hair out of her face. It was so much easier to deal with underwater, where it would just follow her wherever she went like a blue cloud. Now it hung in her face, extraordinarily heavy. She did the best she could anyway, and began to move towards where she had heard the crack of the violent bolt of lightning. The rain still hissed in her eyes like an angry cat, spitting water at her. Onua ignored it and pushed through the falling curtains, pursuing the source of her curiosity.

Firemare 07-29-2009 08:24 PM

Lore gaped at Ouna before pursuing her "What are you doing? You don't go towards the lightning strike! You go away!" The mud slopped around her feet as she pursued before sighing and shrugging and merely following along, watching the skies for any more flickers of light.

(Mind if I join? Holmes, but no skeleton post)

The figure remained perched in the tree, the shadows seeming to cling to his form as he watched the two women as they dashed off into the rain, the scaly one with tenuous success. Adonis Felkit, or Donny as those who knew him well enough called him, shot skyward with a terrific leap, landing without a sound, and running in a crouch towards the two. They were interesting, and he had been unemployed for for some time now, and an unemployed assassin was a bored assassin.
As he drew closer to the pair, a thundering crash announced a bolt of lightning that struck close enough that he could feel the ground shudder. It couldn't have been more than a mile or so off. The rain slicked off of his deep brown cloak, the deep cowl concealing his face in a pool of shadow, and the end of the cloak hanging down to his ankles. Nothing else was visible in the brief flash caused by the lightning aside from the hilt of a short, narrow-bladed sword buckled at his waist. These people are crazy, he thought. But crazy is better than boring.
The shadows swallowed the hunched form of the half-goblin/half-hobbit as he crept forward.

A white streak dashed through the trees, blurring until it came to a stop near crossroads where a large tree stood. The wolf stilled, staring at the tree before deciding to dry off. Trotting over to the tree, it slowly morphed into a small girl with long white hair, wearing a hooded black cloak and a tight purple dress that came to stop right above her knee. The mud oozed through her toes as she hurried under the cover of the branches. Once there, she slid her hood off and leaned against the bark of the tree. Thunder crackled in the distant, but sounded like a lullaby to her. She willed her tired body awake and tried to concentrate. Finally, in the distance she saw two figures. TIlting her head, she tried to figure out what they were doing.
