Kenshin smiled. "I could almost feel it from here. Good night, I love you too." In the morning, Kenshin woke up and yawned, rolling over, then got up and headed downstairs. He cooked himself a quick breakfast, then hopped in his car and headed over. He figured he might as well call Alex, to let her know he was on the way over, so she could make sure the back door was unlocked for him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, hitting the first speed dial.

As Alex's father was rambling on, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. "Hey, Ken," she didn't have time to finish, her father ripped the phone from her hand and threw it at the wall. "I paid for that phone!"

Kenshin smiled as he heard her voice. "Hey, A-" he heard the clatter as it hit the wall, then looked at his phone confused. He put it back to his ear. "Hello, Alex? Alex?" He heard the auto-click of the line closing, signaling a dropped call. Worried, he dialed her back, and when it went straight to voicemail, he tossed his phone over his shoulder onto the back seat and gunned it to her place. He stopped out front, and craned his neck to see into her window upstairs, trying to spot her.

"You can't stop me from--" Alex was cut off by her shock from her father pulling out a pocket knife. "Daddy, wh-what's that for?" she asked as she stepped back. Before she had any time to run, her father, with a sick twisted look on his face, stabbed her in the stomach, hoping to kill the baby. She took her last breath before she passed out on the floor.

Kenshin's eyes widened as he saw her back away from him, then saw her father move forward with a knife. He was out of his car before he had finished turning it off, leaping out and running to the door. He kicked it in with all his might, then ran upstairs, blinded by rage. He kicked open Alex's door, and looked around, spotting her father with the knife, and her bleeding on the ground. Without thinking, he charged him, shoulder first, and shoved him against the window looking out towards the front of the house.

Alex woke up with bandages around her stomach, tubes in her nostrils, and a pump set up to her. She looked over at the heart monitor and watched as the lines shot up into the sky and a burst of pain shot through her. A blood-rushing scream filled the entire building.

Kenshin was in the hall with the police, going over what he had seen, when he heard the scream. He threw open the door and ran to Alex's bed. "It's ok, Alex, you're safe, I'm here." He hugged her as two nurses, a doctor, and a pair of policemen walked in, one of them tipping his hat back while the other burst in ready for some kind of assailant or attacker.

Alex cried into his shoulder and wished for it all to go away. "Kenshin, help me! It hurts so bad!" she whimpered. She brought her arm up to her face and bit her hand so she wouldn't scream again.

The Doctor took her other hand. "Nurse," he started, but she was already bringing over something for him. "It's ok, Alex, the doctors will help, you're going to be ok." He looked over as she handed a needle to the doctor, and he put it into the injector area on the IV in her arm.
"Don't worry, it's a light sedative, ma'am. It won't harm the baby." |
"I don't care anymore...just stop this stupid PAIN!" Alex barked. She looked up at Kenshin and her jaw clenched together. "Help...me..." she whispered.

He squeezed her hand. "It's ok, I'm here. I'll do what I can." As he spoke, the sedative started to take effect, numbing her as it circulated. "How do you feel now, Ma'am?" the Doctor asked, making sure she was still responsive, but at least not in as much pain as before.

Alex nodded, and after the pain started going away, Alex looked up at the doctor and nodded. "Much better, thank you, Sir." she said.

He nodded, looking over the machines. "It's going to hurt for a while, and there's not much we can do. Suffice to say, apart for some pain, both you and your baby will be fine."
Kenshin squeezed her hand again as one of the officers stepped forward. "Ms. Fransisco? I'm Officer Gunner, this is Officer Burns. Can you tell us what happened earlier today?" |
Alex nodded and sighed. "Well, I woke up from my alarm, rolled over, and my dad was standing beside my bed looking really upset, so he started yelling at me for talking to Kenshin, then Kenshin called me and he whipped the phone across my room at the wall. In that instant, I knew the situation was just going to get worse. It so happens that I was right, he took out his pocket knife that he always has with him and I panicked, there wasn't even enough time for me to run, until he did this," she showed them the blood stain on the white bandage wrapped around her stomach. "After that, all I remember is passing out, I'm not even sure how I got here. Kenny, what did happen?" she asked curiously.

Kenshin looked down as Officer Burns wrote her statement on his notepad. Officer Gunners watched Kenshin, who sighed.
"Well, I was calling to let you know I was almost there, and to make sure the back door was unlocked so I could sneak in without your dad knowing. I heard the phone clatter, then get cut off, so I pulled up out front and looked to see if you were in your room. That's when I saw your dad in your room, holding a knife." He sat down on a chair by her bed. "Well, I leapt out of my car, kicked down your front door, which I found out later was unlocked, and ran upstairs. When I got there, your dad was standing over you with the knife, looking both shocked and angry, like he didn't realize what he had done, but blamed you for it anyway. I just sort of blacked out with anger, cause the next thing I knew, I was standing at what had been your window. I apparently hit him with enough force to send him through it, and he fell out the window onto your front lawn. He got lucky, though, and landed in some bushes." Kenshin looked at the doctor, who nodded. "He has a sprained back, and is currently being held under guard while he's being treated, down the hall." He nodded his head in the general direction. "He has refused to speak to anyone, even the police." |
Alex's heart went out to Kenshin and she hugged him tightly. "I'm such a lucky girl," she whispered. She let go and crossed her arms. "Good, he deserved it, he attempted killing my baby!" she hissed.

Officer Burns nodded, but Officer Gunner didn't comment. Kenshin hugged her back. "I'm just glad you were ok." He pulled back. "Anyway, when your mother heard the commotion, she ran upstairs, and found me trying to stop the bleeding, then called 911 and went to check on your father."
Officer Gunner stepped forward. "We've got him on Assualt with a deadly weapon, and Attempted Murder. If convicted, he'd be put away for quite a while." He walked forward and set some papers next to her bed. "You don't need to do it now, but if you can fill out these forms, we'll take him in once the doctors release him." He backed away. "He won't be released any time soon, though, so rest for now and get to them when you can." |
Alex stared at the stack of papers and nodded, looking at Officer Gunner. "I'll do it soon, there's not much else I can do," she admitted. Her eyes shifted to Kenshin who was standing by the bed, she grabbed his hand. "Will you stay with me?" she asked.

Kenshin smiled, nodding, and sat back down in the chair by her bed. "Of course, Alex. I'll stay as long as they let me." He kissed her forehead, then looked at the doctor. "Visiting hours for non-family end at 8 O'clock tonight. They pick up at 11 O'clock in the morning." Kenshin nodded, and looked back at Alex, intending to stay every one of those hours if she wanted him to.

Alex nodded and sighed. "You don't have to stay that long, just as long for me to stay sane." she said with a small laugh, hoping to lighten the mood.

He smiled back at her, and nodded. "Don't worry, Alex, I'll stay for as long as they'll let me. I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be then near you." He took her hand, then looked back at the officers, who both turned to go.
"Well, we'll get out of your hair. Let us know if anything changes, and when you get the forms filled out, you can have your boyfriend drop them off at the station." Burns got the door for Gunner, who left without a backwards glance. Burns gave a slight smile and wave goodbye, then headed out after him, closing the door. |
Alex watched them leave and looked back at him. "So, do you know how long I have to be in here?" she asked.

The doctor looked up to cut Kenshin off. "We need to keep you here today, Friday, and Saturday. If you're stable, we'll release you on Sunday afternoon." He turned to the nurse, who nodded, then the doctor left, letting the nurse take over.
Kenshin smiled at her. "Well, there goes our weekend." He said it lightheartedly, trying to keep the mood light. |
Alex smiled a little as well. "Not necessarily, you can come hang out here with me, butt loads of fun." she said. She did a sarcastic finger twirl and laughed a little.

He laughed, and leaned forward and kissed her. "Well, at least I'm an amazing conversationalist." He smiled, remembering the terrible time he had trying to come up with something to say on their first date.
