She laughed openly as he spoke she touched his face with her hand delicately. "Different? Well different is good isn't it? And Adam I don't think you are giving England enough credit." she told him laughing "I mean if it wasn't for england I would have never met my husband and now that you are in my life now...well now I cannot imagine it with out you!" she said her words meaningly. She nodded as he told her not to ask about his past even though she wasn't going to admit it...she was curious about what he didn't want her to know. Maybe the topic would just come up.

Adam took Gaytri by the hand and led her into the grand ballroom of the Admiral's home. The steward at the door announced their presence and he guided into the crush of people.
Adam strolled deliberately over to the Admiral. "Admiral, Mrs.Cabot, I'd like to present my wife, Gayatri Wyndham." Adam a slight bow and gestured Gayatri forward. |
Adam and Gayatri weaves their way through the crowd. Gayatri was dumb struck as they entered the ball room, if was beautiful the huge chandelier above their head and the grand room the exotic faces she felt Adam stop and she looked up nervously they were in front of a woman. She smiled slightly and put together her hands bowing her head slightly she whispered a light namaste. "It is a pleasure to be finally meeting you Mrs.Cabot" she smiled lightly.

The admiral and Mrs. Cabot looked on in shock. Adam had told them he was married, but not a local woman. They immediately turned away and made their excuses to Adam.
"That was odd. Mrs. Cabot was so anxious to meet you." Adam pondered. "I wonder what that was all about." |
Gayatris eye brows etched up in a surprised way..."Adam I don't think they like me too much.." Gayatri trailed off. "I..I think I should go home and it would be better if I wait for you at home" she was surprised she had been looking forward to meeting them, but too bad they weren't so anxious meeting her. "I am sorry if I said something wrong Adam" she whispered too him. She hoped he wouldn't loose his job because of her. She looked at him apologetically.

Adam looked at Gayatri, confused.
"How do they know they don't like you? They barely even met you. I just intro-" Adam trailed off as he realized what had happened. "Those bloody idiots! I can't sodding believe that they would so bleeding elitist!" His voice rose far beyond what was acceptable for the occasion. "Gayatri, you will not go home without me. If these people aren't interested in my wife being at their soirée, then I'm not interested in being here either!" Adam was terribly angry, his face was ablaze. "Gayatri, YOU did nothing wrong and you musn't apologize." Adam calmed his anger and smiled at her. Rather than go over and beat the Admiral into a pulp, as he wanted to do, he took Gayatri's arm, kissed her hand and escorted her out to the coach. |
She patted her husbands arm comfortingly, "shhh Adam it's okay, don't worry I am just as shocked as you are but there is nothing to do" she told him lightly shrugging. It had began to rain outside as he took her outside behind him. She stopped him before they reached the coach and fell into his arms laughing with amusement, it was raining a bit faster now " well I guess we are even now Adam the way my father behaved with you was unacceptable to me and the way that the general behaved with me was unacceptable to you" she left of with a shrug. Then Gayatri did something unexpected she took his hand and in the best mock british accent she could come up with she asked him giggling, "would you give me the honour of dancing with you on this beautiful raining night Mr. Adam" and the night sky seemed to be full of her laughter.

Adam laughed brightly at Gayatri's accent and gave her a deep, formal bow.
"I would be delighted, Mrs. Wyndham," he took her about the waist and held her hand tight and began to waltz as the rain poured down upon them. The rain made Adam's shirt stick to him and his hair fall into his eyes. He laughed as they danced in the pouring rain, waltzing to unheard music. |
She laughed and gave the best courtesy she could with her sari. She instinctively moved her hand across his forehead to move the hair out of his beautiful eyes and she blushed as she looked into them, her single arm was wrapped tightly around his name and the other one was hand in hand with his. She smiled and spoke sincerely when she said these words "Adam...I think I am begining to fall for you more now that I understand you I mean you are a wonderful person to be with and probably the nicest guy I have ever met" she smiled shyly and put her head on his shoulder as they continued to dance around in the rain there was a gentle blush over her light brown face.

Adam pulled her away from him, lifting her chin in his hand. He brushed her cheek with his thumb and spoke quietly to her.
"Gayatri, I love you. I love more than you could know." Adam bent to her face and kissed Gayatri deeply, cradling her face in his hands. "You are the most lovely creature I've ever known," he spoke to her as he pulled away. As they stood there, arms wrapped around each other, gently swaying, a voice called out in the darkness. "Adam, Adam Wyndham? Old chap, that is you!" A man dashed across the courtyard to where Adam and Gayatri stood in front of the coach. |
She sighed as he Adam kissed her, shyly reaching up on her tip toes she kissed him back and pulled away lightly when he did. "I love you too Adam and I promise to be here when ever you need me" she told him smiling wrapping her arms tightly around him she just stood there buried in him while they swayed lightly. Gayatri looked up when she heard Adams name being called and stared into the darkness with Adam.

Th man dashed up to Adam and Gayatri, practically sprinting in the rain.
"Adam, what are earth are you doing in India? How in hell have you been?" The man spoke rapidly, words rolling out of his mouth. Adam stared at the man, his mouth falling open from surprise. "Bristol, it's great to see you. I'm here on assignment," Adam's voice was strained. The conversation proceeded with the men exchanging pleasantries and chatting. Bristol looked over at Gayatri and spoke to Adam. "So, who's this? Catherine will be jealous, I'm sure." Adam turned a deep shade of purple and hurried Gayatri into the coach. He left the man standing alone and the coach took off. |
Gayatri looked at the man she smiled and nodded. She stood in the rain her arms still around Adam, she waited patiently for them to finish their conversation he seemed to be an old friend of Adams. "Cathrine?" she interjected and looked up at Adam her eus confused she was even more confused when Adam rushed her into the coach while the poor man was left there standing. She pulled away from Adam on the coach and faced him and asked in a quivering, fearful tone "A..Adam....who is this Catherine that the man was talking about?" she didn't look him in his face for fear she might burst into tears....but she decided it was better to hear him out.

Adam's hands were shaking violently. He hoped that he had gotten Gayatri out of there before she had heard anything.
His fears were confirmed when Gayatri asked about Catherine. "No one, darling she's no one." Adam tried to pull Gayatri into his arms. |
She took his face in her hand. "If she is no one then why did you leave there in such a hurry?" she asked him, she sniffed "Adam, please are you hiding something from me? Tell me who she is please I can only comfort you if I know who this Catherine is." She looked in his eyes confused her brown eyes slightly sad.

"Gayatri, you don't understand, It's nothing. She's... nothing. I had to. To get my commision, you understand. So my family would have something." The words pured out of Adam's mouth. He was near tears.
"Listen, I don't want to hurt you. It's going to hurt you and I don't..." he sighed and buried his head in his hands. "I'm married, not- not just to you. Back in England. Her name is Catherine and I married her straight out of Exeter. I had to, her family was wealthy and paid for my commission into the Navy." |
Gayatri was slowly crying now quiet tears. Why hadn't he told her before....he was still her husband she knew she loved him but not the same way anymore he would always be shared she realized. Something for her was gone between them....she sighed she couldn't bare to see him in pain she reached out her hand wrapping herself around his body and whispered soothing words into his ears while tears silently still dripping down her face. "Adam" she took his face in her hands and kissed him softly. "I understand Adam but....you do realize that...that somethings will change betweenus because you have another wife...I am sorry if that hurts you but I still...need sometime." she whispered And turned her face away from him the pain it was over coming her. She had trusted him just to be betrayed, she sighed she shook her head trying to ensure that it wasn't his fault but some where deep inside she was truly broken. Only time could heal their trust again.

Adam lifted his head and looked into Gayatri's teary eyes. He nodded, realizing that telling Gayatri had changed their relationship for a long time.
Adam's eyes fell, trying not to cry. He had destroyed the relationship between he and Gayatri, the woman he had just discovered that he truly loved. "Stop the coach!" Adam called to the driver. "I'll see you at home," he spoke softly to Gayatri. If you would have the maid make up the guest room for me, I would appreciate it." Adam kissed Gaytri's forehead and stepped out of the still rolling coach. He pulled his collar up and stuffed his hands in his sleeves, before walking in the driving rain. |
She nodded to Adam she didn't open her moth for fear it would betray how she felt inside. She watched as Adam walked out and she collapsed after he was off...she sobbed then she heard the coach master tell her that she was at the stop, she composed herself together and nodded thanking him.
She walked inside and realized the maid wasn't there, and she didn't want to disturb her at this time so she went into the guest room herself and made the bed for Adam herself. She went to her room and changed into dry clothes and went to Adams wardrobe and took out a clean dry pair of his night clothes. She grabbed his towel before heading back to the guest room where she neatly made his bed and laid his clothes so he wouldn't have to search in the dark for them. She headed back to the room feeling dead, she walked and just looked out the window. Tears silently began to slip down her face again as her thoughts travelled back to Adam she hoped he was safe. She turrned around to her dresser to get her brush she opened the drawer and saw the Varmala he had bought her was in there. She ran her fingers over the petals and gave a little sad smile. She walked over and slipped undercover she missed Adam beside her. |
Adam gritted his teeth as the cold rain fell down on him. The night was chilly and the rain wasn't helping. He was so angry that he really didn't feel the chill, but his body was shaking for another reason.
Adam couldn't stand it anymore. He flung back his head and screamed, as loud as he could until his voice was rough and hoarse. The words flung to the wind over and over agian until he could only whisper them. "I'm so sorry." Adam knelt by the roadway, on the wet ground and wept for the first time since he could remember, |
Gayatri was fully submerged undercovers, she was crying she let everything out. The pain, the frustration....everything she whished to hold her husband more than anything right now and tell him that it would be okay. She sat up in bed rubbing her red eyes, she sighed she couldn't sleep she went to the guest room to check if Adam was back....but her attempt was useless he wasn't back she went to stand against the window, "Adam....please be safe where ever you are" she whispered to the air around her.

Adam stood to his feet, wiping the rain and tears from his face. He squinted through the water and looked around him. He still had quite a ways to walk.
Adam sighed, thinking this childish display had cost him quite a lot of time. He pushed the thought away and set to walking. He expected he would arrive in about thirty minutes. |

Gayatris eyes were weary with sleep and tears, she hadn't moved from the spot next to the window. She was clutching at the shutters nervously. She was a little girl waiting for someone to bring home some special treat or something, she kept squinting in the rain because she thought she kept seeing Adams figure. She sighed and wondered what she would say to him once he was back she grabbed a chair and sat next to the window the weariness was getting to her she put her chin on he hands and rested he head for a moment before she lost the fight with the brain and fell asleep. |

Adam walked just a few steps further and could finally see the home he and Gayatri shared. He could see the lights in the windows and there in the front window, a shadow. He stepped forward until, it was clear. It was Gayatri, her head upon her hand. She seemed to be sleeping, in front of the window. Was she waiting on him? Adam's heart swelled then he remembered the bitter heartache of hours earlier. He should've know she'd be worried. She was far too kind to simply be callous and forget him. Adam ran the last few steps to the house, shaking himself as dry as he could and removing his wet, muddied boot under the awning over the doorway. He crept in the house trying to make as little noise as possible. |

Gayatri stirred in sleep, and whispered something to her self. She saw a shadow in the house and perked up. She looked around and whispered "Adam?...Adam are you here" her voice was hoarse, and she had tear stains on her cheeks. She looked around her head confused, she thought she was dreaming, "ugh..." she held her head, it was hurting her. She sighed as she got off the chair and put it back. |
