Name: Jeffery von Lanninghan
Age: Approximately 27 standard years

Powers: Mid- to high-level Force powers. As a "Grey Jedi", he has access to both Light and Dark Sides of the Force, but the Light Side is his primary utilization
Alliances: The New Jedi Council

History: Born to a line of Force-sensitives dating back to the time of the Clone Wars, Jeff was tapped by the New Jedi Council to partake in training. After several disciplinary issues stemming from insubordination, the Council decided to step in a different direction by allowing him access to both disciplines of the Force (Light and Dark) in an attempt to resurrect the Grey Jedi, a caste of Jedi Knights that allowed for older councils to have greater flexibility in their scouting, policing, etc. Jeff is their first attempt. He is largely autonomous from the Council, but does ultimately answer to the Council heads on matters dire to the Jedi at large. Currently, his standing mission is to monitor the 'magics' of the universe, and report back possible candidates for Force training.

<Scene: The Venture Compound... More specifically, the former AARL, the current 'home' of Dr. Byron Orpheus and his daughter, Triana>

The slamming of a closet door broke the silence of the household, and a rather distressed (and very slightly perturbed) Byron Orpheus stepped out of his young daughter's room.

His meeting with the Master had gone well enough. That is to say... As well as they normally did. Byron could never gauge what to expect when he stepped through that closet door into the Necropolis. The Master always put on a show, in some form that always gave him some sense of pleasure... Usually a physical, sexual pleasure... Which disturbed the Doctor to no end. But it was always for a point, a purpose. And it was usually a bombshell.

"... There's gonna be a couple of folks visiting you real soon... They're an interesting pair, and they're going to be evaluating your skills. It's a chance to show off, unwedge that stick you've got crammed up-"

"Evaluated???" The necromancer's incredulous tone was enough to make even the Master wince.

"Relax...! Geesh... Just because I'm 'The Master' doesn't mean I don't have people to answer to as well." He smirked at his prized pupil's reaction. "There are different schools of magic, and these different schools evaluate each other... Police... Whatever. Our time came up, and two other schools wanted to take a look-see." He shrugged.

"They always want to see the best. Which is why I turned to you."

"... 'kay." The Doctor slapped a hand to his forehead as he uttered that syllable. That damnable MISTER Venture. The Master cocked an eyebrow, and may have smiled... It was hard to tell in his particular form.

"It's considered an honor," the Master uttered off-handedly, then pushed his attention elsewhere. "Now you best get ready. I've got... Things to attend to."

"An honor indeed," Byron muttered to himself as he wandered into the living area, items placing themselves in the proper spots behind him. "My work is not mere child's play. It takes a great many years to perfect the powers I have." He turned, and with a deft (and dramatic) swish of his hand, made the vacuum cleaner wheel itself into the closet.

"No matter," he said aloud, turning with a flourish, his cloak trying desperately to follow suit. "If it is a demonstration of prowess they want, then a demonstration of prowess they shall have!" His hand darted toward the kitchen, fingers flared... The Doctor's body poised to summon something dark from the depths.

"Triana! We will be having guests! Help me... PREPARE THE FINGER FOODS!"

A silence followed... Seconds passed... Time stretched quietly into a full minute before a new noise was heard:

"Oh."

Byron slumped back into a nearby chair with a heavy sigh. Triana wasn't here. She told him she needed time to think. And after the last bombshell the Master laid out, he wasn't surprised. He wiggled his fingers lightly towards the kitchen again, and after a few moments, a mug of birch beer obediently made its way to his awaiting hand. He sipped the nectar and sighed sweet relief.

"I wonder when they will be here," he asked no one in particular.

A young woman approached the gate to the Venture compound and double checked the clipboard attached to her belt. This was the right place. She returned the clipboard to its place and looked around, her blue eyes studying the gate as a smirk glanced across her face. Her eyes landed on the speaker and her smirk fell as she glided to it and pressed a button.

"Hello?" A surly voice answered.

"I am here to meet with Dr. Byron Orpheus, allow me safe passage."

"Why hello there, miss, maybe you would rather meet with Dr. Thadeus Venture, hmm?"

"No, I am here to meet with Dr. Byron Orpheus, please let me pass."

"I'm not sure if I should do that, is he expecting you."

"I will not ask again," This time the woman sounded irritated.

"Well, unless you come to see Dr. Venture first I will not let you through."

With that the woman rolled her eyes and held up a hand at the gate. A ball of dark fire came from her hand and knocked the gate open. She continued inside but did not get far before lasers were being fired at her. The woman backed up and blasted the lasers with a bolt of electricity. She continued on her way as she shot the lasers one by one to disable them.

The woman made her way to Dr. Orpheus's front door and knocked. She found herself thinking she should have expected Dr. Venture to be an orc about this.

When the young man came to the place he was assigned to go, he blinked a few moments. The New Council had told him to expect 'interesting' things from this place.

However, the -last- thing Jeff was expecting was to see was a charred entry gate, and what looked like an electrocuted laser defense grid. His lips quirked as he tightened his grip on the blaster in his cloak. The reports had said there were basically two sides to this place: One of magic, which he was there to study... And one of science. So as not to reveal too much immediately, he decided that the mercenary role would be appropriate for the moment.

Though the Jedi mantra of common decency was the one that walked him to the gate buzzer and rang it.

"Who the Hell rings the doorbell when it's been blasted open already?" The voice was exasperated, but distant... And closing. It wasn't coming from the intercom, but from a thin, balding man with glasses walking to the remains of the gate. He looked Jeff up and down with disinterest. "Yes, what is it?"

"I'm looking for Dr. Byron Orpheus." The man slapped his forehead with a groan.

"You've got to be kidding me," he said with a mutter, then looked back impatiently. "Hatred! We've got another possible lunatic looking for Dr. Orpheus!" He turned back to Jeff with a dispassionate glare. "Now I'd really like it if you could just stay here and let my bodyguard make sure you're not some psycho or something." Jeff took a deep breath, found his patience, and waved his hand lightly in front of the man's face. "Oh what is this, are you going to try some 'Jedi Mind trickery'..."

"I mean you and your family no harm, Doctor Venture."

"You mean us no harm."

"You'll let me be on my way to see Doctor Orpheus."

"You can go ahead and see Doctor Orpheus."

"Thank you for your kindness, Doctor Venture."

"You're welcome." Jeff smiled, and walked past the man... Only to see a much larger, barrel-chested man in a military helmet coming down the path, none-too-quickly despite having seen -everything-.

"Whoa... Jedi Mind Trick?"

"Yup."

"For real?"

"You bet." The man scratched his head.

"You just want to see Orpheus? No... Nefarious plans to... I don't know... Blow up the compound, or make off with those two sweet, beautiful, angelic kids?"

"Nah. Just have an appointment with the necromancer."

"Oh, well... That's just swell! He's over there in the far building." The man pointed to a rather formidable structure.

"Thanks a lot."

"Sure thing, pal!" The big guy turned, and ran towards the woozy-looking Thaddeus Venture. "Doc! Hey, Doc! That guy just used the Jedi Mind Trick on you...!" Jeff laughed, and started towards the building. He caught sight of a young woman standing there, looking rather impatient... Or frustrated. She was masking her feelings well enough. But it seemed she was waiting to see Orpheus as well.

This was curious. The Council didn't mention other parties.

He internally calmed and focused, letting the Force bring him balance... So as not to reveal anything as he approached.

The woman saw someone walking tword her out of the corner of her eye. She raised an eyebrow and smirked, "You must be the other they said would be coming." Her voice was a little harsh from the aggravation caused by Dr. Venture.

"Well, good luck to you." She said to ease the sting of her voice, "My name is Enzeru."

The sorceress sighed and rang the door bell to Dr. Orpheus's home. She knew he was here, she felt the magic. "Where is he, I know he was expecting us today. Leaving a lady waiting like this is just rude."

Jeff nodded to the woman as he approached, sensing the annoyance tossing over her like a wave.

She must've had the misfortune to deal with Doctor Venture as well.

"I'm Jeff." He said quietly, reflecting on her statement. Whomever she talked to, they let her know he was coming... But the Council...

"Ahh," he thought to himself, feeling her aggitation ebb, and finally catching the slow pulses of a darker grey emenating from her. His connection to the Force told him that she was a 'magic-user'... Something dark, but not nearly as dark as the thrum he felt from inside the structure. The Council wanted him to find out for himself.

His mission must've not been solely about Orpheus then.

"It is a bit of bad form to keep people waiting, I agree," he mused as he felt the darkness approach the door. He glanced as the door opened, revealing a tall, gaunt, ornately dressed man. The darkness of his essence poured from him, but... It was odd... Not sinister like the Sith and the other users of the Dark Side...

-----

"Ahh, you must be the two 'observers'," Doctor Orpheus stated simply, with the slightest hint of disappointment in his voice. These two were ludicrously young! But he could tell both were powerful in their rights... The young woman possessing a power much like his own, but brighter. The other one... The young man... Was a bit more mysterious. His power was like the static of the TV after he'd fallen asleep after overindulging in Nik-L-Nips.

"I do apologize for keeping you both waiting," he continued, throwing the door open with a flourish. "There were many preparations to make to prepare for your arrival! I... Am Doctor Byron Orpheus, necromancer extraordinaire! My card." His hand moved impossibly fast, and produced two of his business cards with a spark and whiff of fresh flame.

"And now!" he boomed, gesturing with his cloak and pointing deeper into the sanctum. "You shall sample the greatest collections of delights... If you're both hungry."

Enzeru smiled at Dr. Orpheus when he opened the door. So this was the one they were all buzzing about.

"I apologize for the short notice you must have received. I, too, was a little caught off guard by this." Enzeru commented as she took his card and quickly read it before a burst of her own magic sent it to some unknown location with a lovely blue wisp. "My name is Enzeru and I carry no card, most people know me by name, though I doubt you have heard of me."

"I accept your invitation and offer my thanks," Enzeru continued to watch Dr. Orpheus's gestures as if she were a hawk about to swoop down on her prey as she followed him inside.

Something told her she should be keeping an eye on this Jeff, but she was determined to keep to her duty. She was not here to watch this strange man, whose power was not clear. Enzeru definitely would not trust him, after all, it's rude to hide your power.

"Doctor Orpheus I presume," Jeff chuckled with a nod of greeting. "It's a pleasure to be invited to your humble abode." He took the proffered card and slipped it into his coat. As he did so, he caught a small wave of... Something... From his fellow observer. He smirked.

She probably wasn't used to someone that could control their 'powers' so well. Being a Jedi... Even a Grey Jedi like himself.. Was about patience, discipline, and balance. He tried to give her a reassuring smile, letting her know he wasn't a threat unless threatened.

"That likely won't work too well," he sighed to himself as the Doctor lead them into his home. He kept a close eye on him, both physically and 'spiritually'. The Force didn't necessarily need the gesticulations of other magics; he had to take care that the good Doctor didn't operate the same way and surprise Jeff even more than he already had...

-----

The Doctor had lead them into the main room. He'd tried very hard to make things as welcoming as possible, but... Wasn't quite expecting the company he found he had. Various finger foods adorned the tables, a rainbow of beverage delights flanked those.

But the birch beer was well-hidden. That was his.

And he was going to need it in droves once this was over, he feared. He could grab the tension and mystery between the two like it was... A legitimate rabbit from... A legitimate hat. Where that particular analogy came from he wasn't sure, but it worked.

"It seems I was not -fully- prepared for your arrival," he muttered to himself disapprovingly, then coughed. "I shall leave you two for a few moments while I continue the preparations!" He wrapped his cloak around himself with a whirl, and conjured himself a teleportation spell (complete with smoke)...

And his face fell as he realized that it hadn't worked.

"Hmm," he managed to utter out before walking out of the room with a shake of his head.

This... Was going to be... An interesting day.

Enzeru smiled and took a mental note of the failure before turning to the only other person in the room. "So what are your thoughts?"

She faced Jeff and crossed her legs as she waited for his reply. Her eyes were focused on the stranger but her thoughts and ears were still focused on Doctor Orpheus. There was something about him she found charming in an old school television sort of way.
