Maria resisted closing her eyes. After about five minutes, she pointed to a dirt road on the right side of the road. "Turn down there...the first fork in the road you come to you'll be taking a left. Then it's straight on that road until you pretty much run into the beach." She now closed her eyes.
Shadow nodded, taking the road easily. He was tempted to relax, but he kept his guard up. He always kept his guard up, some way or another.
Maria sighed a bit. Her mind had time to wonder, and maybe that wasn't a good thing. She decided to talk some, "You know...you're the first person to not ask me why I keep my eyes closed while the car is moving." She laughed some.
"When I am the passenger, I also keep my eyes closed," Shadow revealed, driving a little more slowly down the dirt road. "But, I will humor you. Why is it you keep your eyes closed?"
Maria smiled slightly, but it was one of those smiles that people put on when they're having a happy but still sad memory. "When I was little, I loved to go for car rides. I'd look at everything outside of the car, and nothing inside it. Because of this, I didn't notice when my dad fell asleep at the wheel, with me sitting in the back. I only looked out the front wind shield just in time to see the head lights of the on-coming car."
"Oh...I'm sorry." Shadow sounded sincere. "My story is not all that interesting. I just tend to get motion sickness in vehicles, and in airplanes. So I close my eyes."
Maria laughed some, opening her eyes because she knew that they were almost at the beach. "it's alright. and that story is pretty common. Some people just assume I have motion sickness, but I don't close my eyes in bus or plane rides."
Shadow nodded, and he pulled into the barely-full parking lot by the beach. "Here we are."
Maria smiled once she got out of the car. It was a pretty big beach, and it seemed like there wasn't many people there because of it. The slight breeze was creating beautiful waves as well. "I love it here."
"It is nice," Shadow agreed, nodding. He wasn't fond of beaches, but this one seemed calm and peaceful...unlike the crowded, loud, filthy beaches he was used to.
Maria smirked some. "Last one to get their feet wet is a rotten egg!" She laughed at the childish saying as she took off towards the water
Shadow blinked, and then he raced after her, just beating her to the water. Of course, he could have gone much faster...but that would have been bad. He didn't want to reveal his species.
Maria shook her head as she put her feet in the water. "I need to make a note that you were some kind of track student in the past. You can really run." She laughed as the waves washed over her ankles and feet.
Shadow grinned, in secret amusement. He wouldn't tell her...but perhaps he would, sometime in the future.
Maria smirked some. "I must have been right." She then walked out farther into the water. "you don't care if the seats in your car get wet do you?"
"Not particularly," Shadow drawled, staying near the shore, just getting his feet wet. "Leather doesn't get damaged by water that easily."
Maria smirked more. "Good!" She put her hands in the water and started splashing Shadow with water.
"Ack!" Immediately, he frowned, but he splashed her back. He didn't seem to understand this was a game until a few seconds later, when he laughed and splashed her some more.
Maria turned her head away so she wasn't splashed in the face at all. She laughed more and started splash up water quicker than before.
Shadow was able to dodge most of it, but he didn't, just to make the game more fun. Instead, he splashed more water at her, grinning.
Maria was definitely getting drenched in water. She put her hands up, still laughing. "I give. I give." She laughed more before moving away from being splashed.
"Ah, victory," Shadow chuckled, pretty soaked, himself. "That was amusing." He was glad the beach seemed to be mostly empty.
Maria laughed some as she ringed out her hair. "I'll win next time we come here!" She laughed more and sat down near the shore, but still in the water. "This isn't your first time at the beach right?"
Shadow sat down next to her, shaking out his long azure hair. Even when wet, it still managed to flow beautifully down his back. "No, it isn't. I've been to beaches before...in other countries. But not in the United States. I've heard too many bad things about overcrowded beaches to even want to go to a big beach here..."
Maria frowned some. "That's too bad. There's lots of beaches that aren't crowded in the U.S." She then looked at him with a bit of curiosity. "You've lived in other countries?"
