~I won't go quietly into that dark night~ -Staria et Lindylu-
Al was seventeen when it had happened. The dark haired boy had lived alone with his older brother Darius. Darius had always been a bit odd, but their mother had died and no one knew where their father was, they had no aunts or uncles. This was all Al had had until that day.
Al and Darius' relationship had always been a strange one, Al would come to school with bruises, but he never said anything. He'd never spoken to anyone in his classes. And When he turned up dead in an alley way, no one knew who was to blame. There were many who accused his brother of his death, but there had never been any evidence. A memorial was held and tons of kids who had never even spoken to him had showed up. Al had been there too, a ghost among the crowd, he hadn't believed he was dead until that day. That day he saw his body lying in the casket, his brother in tears beside it. Even he wasn't sure how he died. Two years past, Al still hadn't passed on. He spent his days as a spirit roaming the streets and alley ways he had once followed to and from school, hoping to recall just what had caused him to die. |
Slowly a female began walking town the street, her hands in the pockets of her jeans and her head bent. The woman, much of whose body was covered in black vine like or flower tattoos, had piercingly bright green eyes and raven hair. She wore little makeup, just some matching eyeshadow the same color as her eyes really. She was a slender figure, a typical, healthy young woman by all appearances. This was of course false… though she was just realizing how false.
Last year she had been attacked in her home but grabbing her policeman father’s gun had killed the perpetrator before he had chance to kill her. She had then been haunted by his spirit… only recently having managed to discover her ability to help ghosts cross over… or for that matter that she was able to see or hear them. She was brooding on this, in fact, as she was walking forward, nearing the prowling ghost named Al. ((loosely based her appearance on this chick Ghost whisperer by *ValentinaKallias on deviantART )) |
Al spotted the girl, he didn't really think much of her at first, he didn't really notice the people on the street anymore. He'd even stopped moving his legs really, now he just sort of drifted down the sidewalk.
For the first time however he lifted his head, he watched the odd looking girl walk past him. For some reason he felt drawn to her. He started walking again, heading towards her. He felt like she could help him in someway. |
Sensing the ghost grow closer she turned towards the direction she felt him in, saying nothing. She simply looked at him with her intense eyes directly on his, growing a little pale and looking away. “Again?” She said with a sound of discomfort and aggravation. Would this one be mean too? She shook her head, he didn’t feel mean somehow… Still she couldn’t help but feel a little uncertain…considering her prior experience. She began to walk a little faster down the road.
|
She'd looked at him, directly at him. She could see him. For the first time in his entire life or afterlife he found himself seeking company.
"Um hey...hey...heeeey!" Al called as he hurried after her, "You can see me right?" He asked smiling, drifting in front of her a little watching her eyes. |
Sherry glanced at her feet as he grew closer, kicking a rock and trying to pretend she didn’t see him. “No..“ she said instinctually, realizing that she’d revealed she could by saying it. Sighing she ran a hand through her hair and said quietly “I mean…look you’re not going to try to hurt me like the other one are you? Because I do NOT need another year of that….” She muttered, making a motion with her hands to indicate not.
|
Al shook his head a little as he drifted along beside her, "No....I don't think I will. I Haven't had anything better to do....So I've just been going to school like always... I guess I didn't hurt anyone...No one ever said anything...I think"
Al rubbed his head a little looking confused, "maybe they did....I...I can't really remember things like I used to...It gets kind of hazy after a month or two passes." |
Sherry sighed, shaking her head a little. “Right….’ She started to walk forward, muttering to herself about confused spirits and how this was too much for her. She said nothing, however, very clearly and began to walk forward. She’d just intended to go shopping…to walk to her favorite bakery and pick up some treats for herself and dad….She put her hands in her pockets, beginning to talk again without really paying attention. “Hazy… you should still know what you want to do anyway…don’t you” she asked the question absently.
|
"I dunno...I guess I'd like to know who killed me...or if I killed my self.." He frowned "I...really don't know the circumstances of my death..." He said sighing.
He walked along beside her hands stuffed in his ghostly pockets, "And then...I dunno maybe prove my brother's innocence or guilt..." He looked a little upset at the mentioning of his brother. "there's also...a lot of things I don't remember from my life..." He said softly, "Its like...I woke up and I was dead..." |
“How am I supposed to help with that?” She asked herself as much as him, a little annoyed clearly. She frowned, walking up to the door of the bakery shop. “everything has a purpose my ass… I think god just likes laughing at us….” She muttered to herself, just as she entered… the man at the counter would then hear her and give her a strange look.
“Um…. Three of the usual” She said with a blush of embarrassment, knowing the kindly baker that had known her since she was ten was itching to ask her questions as he began to bag up her pastries. “Sherry… you sure sound upset…” He said gently, causing her to shrug and squirm…. |
"I...just wanna know what went on... It's all so weird." Al said apologetically as he followed her in the bakery. He stayed silent while she placed her order. He looked around the bakery and smiled "I've never been here" He muttered as he wandered around peering behind counter with a smile.
|
Sherry blinked a moment and shivered, simply glancing at the ghost before looking back to the baker who had glanced in the direction she looked. “Um .. No…not upset. I was just thinking about something… um Joe? I’m in a hurry…” She said quietly. The older man seemed startled but nodded and after she paid she quickly excited, starting back towards home. “People are going to think I’m insane….” she muttered with a sigh only to have a small dark smile come. “Well…more so then usual” she added absently.
|
Al followed her as she left, he sighed a bit, "Sorry...just...no ones ever even noticed me before" He said quietly.
She really was the first medium he'd approached about this strange situation. "You just don't know how weird it is not knowing how I died..." He said sighing a bit. He watched people walking by him, he missed being human, he did. It was so strange being completely invisible. But he'd been practically invisible when he was a live too. |
Sherry glanced at him, shrugging her shoulders and looking forward again before sighing gently. “It’s fine…. I’m just new to this whole thing…. Only saw one other ghost before and I wanted to kill me…” She said quietly, at first sounding frustrated but then giving him a dark smile at the end. She then turned away, looking into the bag. It was funny… her mother had died some time ago but she still always ordered three… it was an odd quirk but one her father and Joe had learned to accept.
|
Al shrugged a bit as he followed her, "Well you the only one I've found" He said quietly as he drifted on. His shaggy black hair fell over his eyes as he walked. For some reason hair and clothes still obeyed gravity, maybe it was just his memory of gravity, maybe it stopped when he forgot about it.
He sighed a bit and watched her, "I...just....hate being this mystery...this urban legend..." He said sadly. |
Sherry nodded slowly, glancing to the sky. She didn’t’ say anything a moment, simply saying quietly “Then I guess you’re new to this too…” Sighing she shook her head, glancing up at the sky in thought. Urban legend? Hmm… maybe he was that kid found beaten in the alley a while ago… she’d never paid much attention. Her father had spoken that it was a shame…but that was all.
|
"Not really...I'm used to being dead by now...Been dead for two years..." He sighed folding his arms, "I'm not used to being noticed though" He said softly.
|
I meant …oh never mind…” She sighed gently and shook her head, not bothering to explain that by this she meant interacting with the living just as she was new to interacting with the dead. She looked up at the sky again then, shivering a little in discomfort. Slowly she murmured “So….what’s the last thing you remember?”
|
"My funeral..." He said flatly, "And then I started hearing rumors about how I died...I ...before I died..." He scratched his head a little and frowned "I don't know...I wonder if I wasn't insane or something while I was alive...Being dead puts things into perspective... But All I really remember is walking home from school. And Walking to school. I know my Name though...so you could ask people that knew me right? I'm sure there are still some in town..."
|
She was about to say that she meant when he was alive but he answered the rest for her. She inwardly sighed, shaking her head and glancing downward. So he really had no idea about his life… how was she suppose to solve what was wrong in it that prevented him from moving on in death? This was crazy… just crazy… “I see…” She finally said quietly, glancing up at the apartment building her father and she lived in. She approached slowly not in any hurry to get inside…
|
"What I know of my life is that my parents died a long time ago...They passed on...I haven't bumped into them here. I Probably wouldn't recognize them anyway since I was young. And My brother raised me... Then everything gets kinda fuzzy at about...twelve..." He muttered. "I heard all the rumors about my death though..." He said quietly, "And about myself...I can tell you those..." He said drifting beside her, "would that help you at all?" |
Sherry shrugged, eyeing him a moment. “Can’t hurt I guess…” She finally said quietly, tilting her head to the side. Perhaps rumors would point in the right direction.. .sometimes they did. Her father had always said that there was no such thing as knowing to much as a detective and Sherry was starting to realize that whether she liked it or not she was going to have to become one. Well… at least some kind of detective… perhaps once he told her his name she could get her father to get his file…
|
Al nodded a bit and scratched his head, "My name is Alim Naser...My friends always just called me Al. My mother was from over seas. Lets see the biggest rumor was that I was a victim of Domestic Violence...and that my brother killed me. But the way he cried at my funeral... that doesn't seem right."
He scratched his head, "I get the impression that me and my brother got along...for some reason... Others said it was gang related...That I was in a gang..." |
Alim Naser” she repeated to commit to memory, biting her lip. Sherry was not looking forward to her father asking why she wanted the case file… but it seemed wise. She didn’t want to say anything about the crying on the funereal, as a cop’s daughter she’d know killers to cry at funerals before… not all killers didn’t feel regret. Still…the guy was dead, she hardly was going to make him hurt more over something that may or may not be true…
She finally spoke to the last, saying quietly “do you think you were in a gang?” If he was that would bring even more troubling things to bare… sure, Sherry had been taught to handle herself well by her father, and she could kick ass but ultimately… one girl could only do so much against a whole gang… this wasn’t an anime, this was reality where numbers tended to rule… |
Al shook his head, "No...I doubt it...I think I was pretty lonely actually. I mean at my funeral...I didn't know any faces. I mean they were all pretty like..I went to class with them...I got that impression." He said quietly, "But no one looked particularly sad that I was gone.."
