How it started...

The World is a multiplayer online role playing game. Over 100,000 orders had been taken in November of 2007. The World was sold online for download, and in the first day alone it sold 4,576,623 copies. A genius programmer Harald Hoerwick created it under the name Fragment. It was a limited beta that came out nine months prior to the release of The World. It was stopped early for unknown reasons. This game is played with a headset the user wears over their eyes and a controller. Most of the players in The World are from Japan.

The World’s storyline is based off a poem called Epitaph of Twilight by Emma Wielant.

In the game the forces of good have retreated to cities to protect them from monsters. Only adventurers are allowed to leave the magical shields to battle the monsters outside. Adventurers draw their power through their mastery of waves, symbols that are inscribed on their bodies and equipment that allow them to channel power into talents of either magical skills or abilities.

The Gods that were said once destroyed by their own followers have started appearing once again in The World. Rumors spread saying that whoever meets one of these gods ends up in a coma if their experience isn’t told to anyone else. Other rumors say that people have tried to fight these glitches in hopes of getting a rare item but only ending up in a coma. CC Corp. flatly stated that the comas are caused by something else and not the game. Statues of the God of Judgement have been reported to change color and give of a red aura that summons the god himself. In Mac Anu there had been witnesses claiming they saw the goddess Anu walking the streets late at night with a soft glow surrounding her whole body. Myulin had been said to appear in fields protecting Lucky Animals from being kicked. Another rumor was the God of Death appearing before People Killers and striking them down before they could finish off their victims. No rumors have reported the seeing Aurora but many have gone to the Hull Granz Cathedral in hopes of seeing her there. Only a statue has reappeared which was there once before.

Gods in The World

Anu, the Goddess of Stars

The City of Mac Anu is named after this Goddess.

Aurora, the Goddess of Light

Aurora was captured by the mortal races during the War against the Gods. They sealed her into a statue located in the Hulle Granz Cathedral and used her divine power as a fuel for the Crest Gun. Due to similarities with Aura, Aurora seems to be an attempt by CC Corp to cover up her existence.

Cernunnos, the God of Death

Cernunnos was defeated by his older brother Sol, the God of Creation and was sealed in the Kingdom of the Dead. Refusing to recognize his own death, Cernunnos appealed to his brother seven times to be brought back to the land of the living, but was denied all seven times. Furious, he led his army of the dead against Airceltrai, the City of Dawn in order to force Sol to return his soul back into his body, but when he tried to cross the lake of the Dead World of Indieglut Lugh, the root of the giant white tree, Hladgud, came down and blocked him. Cernunnos was forced to return to the Kingdom of the Dead. It is said that Cernunnos still plans to return to the land of the living and rule over it. The monsters in the world are said to be his pawns.

Folset, the God of Judgement

Folset guards the Morrigu Barrow Wall that blocks the Heavenly Path. It is said only those who are worthy can open these gates and enter the land of the gods, the City of Dawn Airceltrai. The Beast Statues scattered throughout Delta Server are all of Folset.

Myulin, the Goddess of Harvest

The first Goddess created by Sol, she became his partner and helped him create the world by naming all of the creatures within it. Later, she would curse the Elves and transform them into Humans.

Sol, the God of Creation

Eons ago Sol accidentally killed his brother Cernunnos during a quarrel. His lamentations of grief were what created the world. Eventually Sol would go on to create all of the other Gods and Goddesses, as well as the mortal races.

Taranis, the God of the Sun

Eir, the Goddess of Tranquility

The Harvest Cleric class is said to fight in her name.

B A T T L I N G

When a battle starts a blue aura circle surrounds the group allowing no one to leave unless they use the item Smoke Screen. Any other player outside the battle can join in. Three or less players make up a team and monsters are commonly encountered in three or less as well. It is common to have one healer and two fighters. To invite someone into your party you must have their member address which they can only give to you. Then they exchange short mail in the game. While battling PCs may change their weapon or use items; during this time they can not be harmed. But with each time they use an item a time limit is set until they can use a next one which is about 30 seconds. If a magic user is casting a spell they can be attacked and the spell will be stopped. Casting spells or using ability costs the PC SP; when SP reaches zero, the character can not use spells or abilities. SP slowly builds up in time. HP is hit points that are a character’s life. One is harmed by physical damage; if it reaches zero the PC --or monster -- dies. A character can also be inflicted with poison, sleep or curse. Poison slowly drains HP 1 HP every second. It can be cured with Antidote soda and Rip Duk. Sleep causes the character to be unable to move until hit or after a moment of time. This can be cured with Stimulate soda and Rip Mumin. Curse slowly drains SP -- usually 1 SP per second -- which is cured by the use of Blessing soda or Rip Maj. If a PC dies and the battle is won, they will come back, but they will have one HP.

This is a crest device that is key to creating a barrier that stops monsters from invading the town.

Warp Points are teleporters used by players to move around Root Towns, Dungeons, and Fields. Warp Points found on fields require Chim Spheres to operate.

Root Towns

Δ Eternal City Mac Anu
The olderst city in existence. A great location for beginners to preaper themselves for an adventure.

Ω Warring City Lumina Cloth
An emergent city where many adventurers pass by. It is equipped with facilities such as an areana.

Θ Celestial City Dol Dona
A city of the Beast Folk.
This is the central location for intermediate players.

Platforms are found throughout fields and dungeons, and are used to return to a town's Chaos Gate, akin to the "Gate Out" feature in The World. Guilds of rank 3 or above can also use platforms to access their storage.

Fields are one of the three types of areas. All fields are of one basic scenery type, but vary in weather. Each field has a corresponding mission, sometimes a quest, which usually consists of either unlocking and entering the underground treasure room or defeating a boss. To get to an area a PC must put in three words. One adjective for the first word, a noun for the second word
and finally another noun for the last word an example would be Buzzing Honor Fate.

Monsters are scattered across the fields, and there is usually also a Lucky Animal on each. There are also occasionally Unlucky Animals. There are some fields with rivers or ravines that can only be crossed via Warp Point. PvP battles are also not uncommon on fields.

Hulle Granz Cathedral (which means “That Which Hides Heaven) is a field located at Δ Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground. Hulle Granz is a unique field, in that it consists only of a small island with a large cathedral in the center located in a lake of mist.

Morrigu Barrow Wall is a field located at Δ Hidden Forbidden Bulwark. Morrigu Barrow is a great gate blocking passage to heaven. It is protected by the god of judgement, Folset. The One Sin was supposedly used here in an attempt to break the wall.

There are many ways people may communicate in The World being short mail, e-mail, speaking out loud, and the forums.

Short Mail
Short mail can be defined as an instant messaging system with in The World. It is however limited to messaging one person at a time. Also a member address is needed to short mail another player character.

E-mail
This also requires a member address to be done. The inbox for the e-mails are located outside of The World on the Desktop, where many other features can be accessed. This simple way of communication can hold much more words then a short mail within a game. Players are usually notified when they have new e-mails after returning to a town or when it arrives in their inbox if they happen to be in a town. The sender’s picture of they’re character is shown along with the subject title.

Speaking Aloud

This is a very simple method. The equipment that is standard to play in The World a microphone is included. The player may speak into it then the character shall in face say it at the same time. Keyboards are also used as a source of communication but saying it aloud is much easier.

The Community Forum
This area of the desktop is broken down into four separate places known as The World, News, Rumors, and Apkallu.

The World

Asking for help in the game is posted here.

News
Updates on new equipment or anything of the sort are allowed here.

Rumors
Odd glitches or people falling into comas are posted here along with new quests.

Apkallu
A forum made for artists to show off their skills with pictures and commenting other’s art.

Classes

A player character, sometimes called an “avatar”, is a user’s character in The World. Player characters or PCs rely on input from the user this simple fact separates them from monsters, NPCs, and Artificial Intelligence that wanders in the game. PC’s can equip armor and weapons, interact with other PCs, use Chaos Gates to move to other areas, and have a Class along with a Race. Levels of the characters range from level 1 being the beginning level to level 150 the highest level that a PC can reach.

Classes (Jobs) in The World

Adept Rogue
Adept Rogues are eventually capable to equip various weapons and use various magic. However, each weapon must be learned separately and require items, but the training will eventually pay off making them highly adaptable in any situation.

To be able to use a particular type of weapon, an Adept Rogue needs to go through a Job extension. Their appearance often changes when this happens. Four points are given to choose from the following jobs.

Blade Brandier – 1 point
Edge Punisher – 1 point
Twin Blade – 1 point
Flick Reaper – 2 points
Lord Partizan – 2 points
Tribal Grappler – 2 points
Macabre Dancer – 3 points
Harvest Cleric – 3 points
Shadow Warlock – 3 points
Steam Gunner – 3 points

Their stats are very balanced and independent from their chosen Jobs. Because of this, an Adept Rougue is generally “mediocre at everything”, instead of being highly specialized like the other classes.

Blade Brandier
Blade Brandiers fight with a sword similar to a katana. It is said that all warrior classes derive from this class. Although their abilities are average, they can adapt to a wide variety of situations.

This class’s hit rate is average but in regards as speed a Blade Brandier is not as fast as a Twin Blade or a Tribal Grappler, but, they are much faster than the heavily armored classes like Lord Partizan. The weapon they wield is a medium-sized, one-handed, or katana-like sword in battle.

Macabre Dancer
Macabre Dancers are experts at status and ability magic. Since they are allied with both the light and dark spirits, they are proficient in healing and attack magic. They hold large fans in both hands during battle. Their dancing form is said to enchant those who watch.

Macabre Dancers are the expert class for status effects and are very balanced casters, learning both healing and attack spells. They gain spells at the quick rater at one of each job level the go up but learn no arts.

Edge Punisher
Edge Punishers are a job class that prefers to wield giant swords. A blow from one of these weapons has enormous power. It can slice most enemies in half with a single strike.

Edge Punishers excel in physical attacking, especially against armored foes. This class is much slower since they are able to equip heavy armors.

Abilities
- Tiger Blitz (Target: Unit, Normal, SP Required: 12, Job Lv. 1)
- Twin Moons (Target: Unit, Aerial, SP Required: 15, Job Lv. 3)
- Armor Pierce (Target: Unit, Piercing, SP Required: 18, Job Lv. 5)

- Shell Breaker (Target: Unit, Piercing, SP Required: 36, Job Lv. 15)
- Armor Break (Lv.3 Art, Target: Unit, Piercing, SP required: 62*, Job Lv. 21)
With each Edge Punisher job level after gaining this art, the required SP will drop as follows: 62,59,56,52,49,46,42,39,36,33.

Flick Reaper

The Flick Reaper specializes in attacks meant to keep multiple enemies away. However, they are ineffective at long range.

They’re the medium range, “area attack” class. A major disadvantage is that a good Steam Gunner or Lord Partizan could overpower them by attack from afar.

Abilities
- Wicked Strike (Target: Area, Normal, SP required: 15, Job Lv. 1)
- Lotus Flower (Target: Area, Aerial, SP required: 18, Job Lv. 6)
- Reaper's Touch (Target: Area, Normal, SP required: 32, Job Lv. 12)
- Heavenly Wheel (Target: Area, Aerial, SP required: 40, Job Lv. 16)
- Reapers Dance (Lv.3 Art, Target: Area, Normal, SP required: 66*, Job Lv. 21)
*With each Flick Reaper job level after gaining this art, the required SP will drop as follows: 66,63,59,56,52,49,45,42,38,35.

Harvest Cleric

Harvest Clerics are experts in healing magic and are allied with the light spirits. They wield a staff in battle in the name of Eir, the Goddess of Tranquility. They can use some attack magic after they reach a certain level, but most concentrate on healing and support magic.

Their favored weapons are staves, which give bonuses to their magic and elemental stats, and can be used in melee combat, being considerably physicially stronger by level than grimoires but weaker than any other type of weapon. In exchange, Harvest Cleric staves give a much lower magic bonus than Shadow Warlock grimoires, though the elemental bonuses are around the same.

Lord Partizan

Lord Partizans wield a giant lance. No other class can match its piercing power. They have high defensive power compared to other classes, but are weaker against magic.
Lord Partizans have good medium range attacks, but don't excel at "sweeping" attacks like Flick Reapers. Their defense and physical attack stats are very high, with magical attack being their only real weakness. They're also more monster-oriented, with a lot of good armor-piercing and anti-air weapons and skills. Their skill progression for low levels is also among the lowest. Overall, this class can cause the most immediate damage.

Abilities

- Air Raid (Target: Unit, Aerial, SP: 15, Job Lv. 1)
- Thorn Dance (Target: Unit, Piercing, SP: 18, Job Lv. 5)
- Piercing Heaven (Target: Unit, Aerial, SP: 32, Job Lv. 11)
- Scarlet Thrust (Target: Area, Piercing, SP: 38, Job Lv. 15)
- Heavenly Rage (Lv.3 Art, Target: Area, Aerial, SP: 57*, Job Lv. 21)
With each Lord Partizan job level after gaining this art, the required SP will drop as follows: 57,54,51,48,45,42,39,36,33,30.

Shadow Warlock

Shadow Warlocks are experts in attack magic and are allied with the dark spirits. They always carry a book of spells known as a Grimoire to heighten their magic power. Although they can use some healing magic, their repertoire is limited and not very efficient.

Their favored weapons are Grimoires, which give bonuses to their magic and elemental stats, and can be used in melee combat, although with very little effect. Shadow Warlock tomes give a much higher magic bonus and have a much lower physical attack than Harvest Cleric staves, though the elemental bonuses are around the same.

Steam Gunner

They specialize in long-range attack and are weak against close encounters, but if necessary their guns can be used as powerful melee weapons which keep most enemies away.

Steam Gunners are the physical equivalent of Shadow Warlocks. Their shots are skills that operate the exact same way spells do, but deal physical damage instead. Steam Gunners' shots have greater range than any other physical hit, and their physical attack stat has the fastest progression of any class.

Abilities
- Thorn Shot (Target: Area, Normal, SP required: 15, Job Lv. 1)
- Thunder Spark (Target: Unit, Piercing, SP required: 22, Job Lv. 4)
- Plectra Bullet (Target: Area, Aerial, SP required: 18, Job Lv. 7)
- Tempest Blast (Target: Area, Piercing, SP required: 40, Job Lv. 12)

With each Steam Gunner job level after gaining this art, the required SP will drop as follows: 66,63,59,56,52,49,45,42,38,35.

Tribal Grappler

Tribal Grapplers use their own fists as weapons. They have high agility similar to Twin Blades and possess high HP. However, their low defense value makes it crucial to pay attention in battle.

This class has the advantage of a very high attack speed, allowing it to achieve normal Rengeki extremely fast, in addition to very high HP. Their defense, however, is very low. They also have a very limited repertoire of arts. Tribal Grapplers wield light gauntlet type weapons. These can range from lightweight gloves, to oversized, paw-like gauntlets.

- Gale Blade (Target: Unit, Normal, SP Required: 10, Job Lv. 1)

Races

Humans

"They are an ancient race said to be the true descendants of the elves. Many humans have a tendency to look down on the beast tribe because of their primitive way of thinking and technology. The animosity between the two races has caused strife in the past. All humans have very average abilities (parameters) and are capable of doing just about anything. They are highly adaptable and able to handle all kinds of obstacles that come to them."

Beasts

"Beasts are a race of creatures with the body of a human, and the head and tail of an animal. They place a high value on the technology and culture from ancient times, and tend to resist innovations. As a result, steam technology has yet to spread in their cities. Beasts are separated into three tribes that are differentiated by their appearances and abilities (parameters). Although beasts possess amazing abilities and skills in some areas, they are also often extremely vulnerable in others. They pose fierce united fronts with their tribe to overcome these vulnerabilities."

Ya Tribe
"Beasts of the Ya Tribe have fairly large bodies.Although they have bodies of steel that are capable of resisting physical damage, they have limited understanding of magic and are very vulnerable against magic attacks."

Lei Tribe
"Beasts of Lei Tribe possess bodies that are similar in proportion to humans and have the quickest reflexes and speed. They have average physical and magical abilities similar to humans, but are slightly less resilient."

Tu Tribe
"Beasts of the Tu Tribe are smaller than the others. They are highly sensitive and possess great magical abilities and wisdom, but their bodies are much more fragile and they pose almost no resistance to physical attack."

Vital Vistas (These are mainly NPCs)
"Vital Vistas are machine dolls created by steam technology and are treated as domestic servants by humans. They have high dexterity and are capable of operating complex devices that even humans have difficulty with. They are also equipped with self-awareness equal to a child and are able to judge matters on their own. Recently, some Vital Vistas have come to possess self-awareness very close to humans. They have become self-sufficient and started to disobey commands issued by their masters. Some now live independently in towns and have jobs. More and more humans are now worried that eventually the Vital Vistas will revolt against them."

Elves (None exist in the game)
"Elves are a race that died out long ago. They are said to be the ancestors of all humans and beasts."

Spirits
(Harnessed by Spellcasters)
"Spirits are tiny sprites that inhabit streams and forests. Magic spells harness their powers."

Other Races

Chim Chims
Chim Chims are the only creatures that are able to produce Chim Spheres, the raw material that is needed to utilize steam technology.
