Lawrence blinked. "Um. The only other things I've rebelled against are leniency on the school bullying policy and unfair library fines..." He seemed like a goody-goody...he'd always been that way. Perhaps he needed someone to push him out of that comfort zone?
Josh stopped dead in his tracks then turned to look at Lawrence. “and HOW do you rebel agented the leniency on the school bulling policy. What is their policy?”
"Well, uh...I bother the dean. A lot. More than a lot. And the school officials...they leave out a lot of things in their bullying policy. They don't have any protections against LGBT students...and when a fight breaks out, the punishment isn't dealt out to the one who deserves it. The one who made the first hit. It's given out to the one who hits the most. That's just...stupid! What are we supposed to do--lay down and take it?"
“No we are supposed to fine cruel and creative ways of making them pay.” Turning back he walked back to the common room. “so what are your classes?” flopping down onto one of the plush chairs in the common room he pointed at the other one for Lawrence to sit in. “I don’t know what classes I am to be having, they had a note in my introduction latter that I had to take some test or some such.”
Lawrence slowly sat down next to him, shifting in the chair to get comfortable. "...I'm taking, as my major courses, Psychology, Sociology, Trigonometry, Astronomy, Latin, Advanced English, Advanced Government and Economics...and I have a side course of Cooking."
“And that is what you call a LOADED Schedule.” Josh opened his eyes a bit wide as he spoke. “Don’t think I will be getting such advanced classes as those. Most of the schools I went to kept me in the lowest classes they could without getting my family mad at them. Only class they ever put me in that was advanced was Musical Theory. They felt that because my dad dose what he does then I should be just as good as him. They were severally disappointed when they found out that I was not talented in that way.”
"I guess so," Lawrence replied. He rarely ever had a lunch period throughout his day, that was how loaded his schedule was. "Musical Theory sounds kinda boring...if I were to take a music class, I'd be a part of the school choir, or band..."
“Musical Theory involves a lot of talk about what works and what does not work when it comes to composing. Lots and lots of boring stuff.” Leaning back into the chair Josh looked around the room. There were a few other students there lounge in the other chairs or working at the common room table. A few of them looked like they were trying to finish something important but that could not be right, no one had gotten assignments yet. I wonder why they are working so hard. Could they have been given an assignment over the summer holidays? Can you be given assignments over holiday? Josh looked a little confused at the way they were working. “Can you get the same teacher each year?”it was said more to himself then to Lawrence.
"...Oh. I see." Lawrence paused, then yawned widely, stretching his arms out. "Yeah, you can, if you request them and the teacher accepts the request..."
“but why would someone want to have the same teacher each year? Can the teacher decide to have you back next year even if you don’t want the teacher?” realizing that Lawrence had yawned before he had spoke, josh looked over at him. “would you like to go to bed, you seem tired.”
"If the teacher is great, then I see no problem with it. The teacher and the student both have to agree on it, so a teacher can't force a student to return to their class," Lawrence revealed, nodding. "...I'm a little tired, but I don't know if I would like to go to bed yet or not."
“ah, so….” Josh looked back at the students who were working on the papers. “What are they doing? Do the teachers give over the brake work?” Josh would wait till Lawrence said he was tired to go to bed. It was not like he was tired but it would be best if he went to bed as early as the others would, so he could wake up ready for the first day of school. Even if he did not become the star pupil that the dean was hoping for. “When you want to go to bed tell me please, I would like to get to bed about the same time you do so that we won’t be wakening each other up.”
Lawrence glanced over at them and furrowed his brow. "Eeehhh...actually, I don't know what they're doing," he admitted, cracking a sheepish grin. "Maybe it's work for a class I don't have." He paused. "...I am tired, I guess...do you want to head to bed?"
Smirking Josh tried not to laugh. “You know that some people would take that comment wrong.” Getting up he looked around. “Yah I think it’s about time to head to bed, what time do you usually get up in the morning any ways?”
Lawrence frowned, coughing a bit. "I didn't mean it that way. Um...I get up an hour before classes start, so I can get everything ready..."
“ahh perfect. They want me up early too so they can give me some stupid test to see where I should go.” Walking to the room he stripped off his shirt and started on his undershirt. “ Josh’s smirk had not left his face. “would you happen to know what the test’s are they are wanting me to take?”
Lawrence seemed highly bothered by the casual nudity as he went to get proper nightclothes. He would change in the bathroom, of course... "It's...kind of like a benchmark test. It's just to see where your skills are, and they'll give you class options. You get to choose, but they 'highly recommend' a certain one, most of the time..."
Noticing Lawrence’s slight embarrassment Josh quickly pulled on his nightclothes. “so its nothing to worry about? Well that takes a bit off my mind. See you in the morning.” Climbing into bed he pulled the sheets up. Josh knew he would not be getting to sleep any time soon; this place was a new place. The cracks and pops of the building settling was one thing. But he know that if he went to sleep again he would have the same nightmare that he had had earlier, it was a given. Watching Lawrence through his eyelashes josh wondered what type of kid would be so body minded. Had he not had to change in front of maids and servants? Then Josh remembered that Lawrence had said he had had this room to himself till now. That would make sense, maybe by the middle of the school year he would feel comfortable enough to undress in front of Josh, but for now Josh would not go undressing himself at will in front of Lawrence.
Thinking of undressing in front of his roommate made him think of his last one. They had spent lots of time only in their boxers talking about all sorts of things. He remembered some of the thoughts that had crossed his minded as he sat there looking at his roommate. Thinking of things that the Dean of Emerald Heights had said was inappropriate to think on. But how could it have been inappropriate if the other boy was thinking near to the same thing? Flipping over Josh growled to himself. Why did the world have to be this way, if you feel one way you feel that way, why did it have to be inappropriate? In the larger world there were many men and woman who acted on these feelings, it was not a sickness of the lower class. |
Lawrence chewed his lip, scuttling off into the bathroom to change. He had always insisted on doing things for himself. Even though his father's home had been packed with maids and servants, Lawrence had always shooed them away when they offered to do something he was perfectly capable of doing.
He'd never really...had any kind of relationship with, or even feelings for, someone else. In all honesty, he considered himself asexual and would probably remain that way until someone convinced him otherwise... He crawled into bed slowly, curling up into a comfortable ball. The only time he was ever forced to change was when he had gym days. Locker rooms were not friendly places. |
The next morning dawned bright and early for Josh. Grumbling he grabbed what was nearest to him in the closet and walked to the bathroom. He remembered the dreams that he had in the night, dreams he wished would not happen each night. This time his last roommate was there too, telling him how dirty and evil he was. How what he had wanted and thought of was disgusting to him.
Josh gasped, his hands shaking and dropping his comb. Leaning against the sink he tried not to cry. Why was he feeling this way, what was this feeling. |
Lawrence faintly heard Josh get up, and definitely heard him gasp. He sat up, slowly. For a moment, he just sat there, blearily. Then, he put his glasses on and peeked into the bathroom. "...Hey...are you okay...?"
Leaning against the sink Josh looked aside at Lawrence. “Yah” his voice cracked as he tried to hold back his feelings. “Just the dreams, they just kind of gotten to me I guess.” Turning his face away he tried not to let the tears fall. “sorry to wake you.”
"...Oh."
Lawrence seemed to feel a little torn on what to do. He shuffled closer and gave him a slightly awkward hug. "Why are you so upset? You always seem to have bad dreams...why?" He seemed honestly curious, and he sure hoped he wasn't prying. |
“My mind, it wont let me alone.” Gently he touched Lawrence’s hand before quickly pulling back. “things I have done, things that were done to me.” His voice broke again as he slumped onto the floor. “sorry I am being childish, I usually don’t do this.”
Lawrence tilted his head and sat down next to him, puzzled. "It's not a bad thing to let your emotions out," he noted, pointedly. "Bottling it all up...that will never work for you. Because one day, that bottle will be full, won't it? And it will burst...all at once."
