'Fifth and Maple,' Erika said. 'It's called "McKinnon Family Diner."'
"Alrighty then, fifth and maple. I'll try to remember that." Before he could forget, he wrote it down. "See you then?"
'Noon?' Erika said, nodding.
"Noon sounds good to me. I'll make sure to set an alarm so I'm there. Well... See you then, alright?" He smiled to her simply. "I'll be looking forward to it."
Erika smiled back. 'So will I,' she said. She opened the door to her truck. 'You can take that truck back to the dig site now, if you like. I think you'll need it.'
"Yeah, likely easier than walking from here. Well... See ya later, then." Waving, he got into the truck to drive it, then waved one last time before driving off.
Erika waved, then drove off in her own direction. A date...she hadn't had one of those in months. Did it even count as a date?
Sighing slightly to himself, a bit uncertain about his own intentions, he made it to the work-site only to hear that his sister had called. He called back, mostly for advice. What was he doing? He didn't even know anymore.
That night, Erika spent her time worrying over the next day. Hopefully, her morning sickness would be over by the time she went to meet with Joe.
The next day, she woke up early. She dressed in a slightly newer pair of jeans, which hadn't yet faded from age, and the only new shirt she had - which had been gotten before she was pregnant and which showed a hint of her expanding stomach. That couldn't be helped, however, and Erika drew her hair into a neat ponytail before going out at noon to the diner. |
Joe got up early in the morning as usual, pushed by his coworkers to flee as soon as possible. As usual, he wore not much more than normal khaki pants and some sort of shirt- not much of a special outfit, but it was still lighter than his work clothes usually were. Waving, he set off to the diner, trying to fight his untamed hair from leaving his head the way he'd left it.
Erika leaned against the wall of the diner facing the street, looking out. She wasn't sure what sort of car Joe would drive, or if he would drive, so she wasn't quite sure what to look out for. Outwardly, she was perfectly calm, but her head was whirling as to what she should and shouldn't say.
He got to a nearby parking lot and parked the truck there as usual before walking down the sidewalk. Seeing her, he waved slightly and made his way over. "Sorry if I made you wait too long."
Erika smiled slightly and straightened. 'No, not long at all,' she said. 'You made it here okay?'
"Yeah. Truck works like a charm so far, so it's good. So... Shall we head in then?"
Erika nodded, going to the door and stepping inside. She held it for Joe, then went to request a table for two.
Walking after her, he looked around the diner with curious eyes. "Huh. Nice little place here, isn't it? Very relaxed feeling."
Erika smiled back at them as a teenage waitress led them to a table. 'It is,' she said, as she sat down. An odd, slightly sad smile touched her face. 'We used to have fun here as kids.' Unconsciously, her hand went to her abdomen.
He looked at her curiously, noticing the hand at her abdomen, which caused him curiosity. "I'm guessing either you're pretty hungry or your stomach isn't happy for some other reason."
Erika looked up in slight surprise. 'Oh! Ah, no...' She smiled. 'Don't worry, it's nothing bad.'
He frowned lightly, then shook it off and smiled. "If you're sure."
Erika smiled a little more. 'Really, I'm fine,' she said. A waitress dropped off their menus, and she glanced through her's.
Though still concerned, he dropped the topic and looked through his menu. "Hm... What to eat... Anything you recommend?"
'Well, the sandwiches're good,' Erika said. 'So's their cream of mushroom soup. I think I'll have a Caesar salad, though. Maybe with some chicken.'
"Hm... I think I'll go with a sandwich, if you say they're good. I'm trusting your judgement on this since you know the place better then I do." A warm smile touched his face as he tried to choose a sandwich. "Huh... This turkey club looks interesting... Know if that one's a good one in particular?"
Erika nodded. 'It comes with mayo, though, just in case you don't like it.'
