Clarid walked home slowly from his bus stop. It had been a long day at school and work and he was in no desire to go home where his parents would be. He frowned as he unlocked the door an carefully peered inside. He gave a sigh as he saw the house was abandoned except for him. He closed and locked the door bounding down the stairs to his basement bedroom. He sighed as he climbed into his bed getting compfy for homework and web surfing.

He pulled out his laptop quickly booting it up with a yawn. As soon as it was running he clicked on the little IM icon and quickly logged on with his username, Hawkz. He then put the laptop down pulling out his Calculus homework.

Out of his entire buddy list, there was only one online.

Cinnabar, whose screen name was HeavyBlade, lived not too far from Clarid, though neither of them knew that. They'd met on an online game and had been friends ever since. Cinnabar had a black-belt in karate, but wasn't very active other than that. He spent all day on the computer, since he attended online college.

He was busy finishing up an online worksheet one of his teachers had assigned when Clarid logged on. He waited for him to make the first move, since he was almost done with his homework.

Clarid worked a bit on a problem before looking at the laptop smiling as he saw his friend HeavyBlade on. He quickly grabbed the computer typing before going back to work.

Hello how are you today?

Cinnabar sighed when the telltale ping of a message flowed out from his computer, glad that he'd finished his homework in time. He took another moment to turn it in to his teacher's drop-box before responding.

I am fine. How about you?

Clarid finished his problem before looking back up at the computer. He smiled a bit.

Eh...I'm alright....too much homework though...

Cinnabar settled himself back down in bed. He was waiting for the Chinese takeout he'd ordered to arrive.

What homework is it?

Clarid rolled his eyes giving a sigh as he looked at the problems.

Calculus it isn't hard just time consuming...it's the Japanese work I'm worried about...

Cinnabar chuckled.

Cinnabar had hated French. He'd had a terrible teacher for three years in a row who rarely taught...instead, she would just give them worksheets and tell them to work.

Clarid laughed at that shakig his head as he did a bit more work.

I'm sooo glad I didn't take French! *gag* the berets bother me!

It was either French, German, or Spanish for me. French is easier than the other two...

Cinnabar had been so glad to get out of high school. Online learning was much easier for him.

Clarid laughed it was true his parents both moved to Amrica when Clarid was about five he always retained his Germanic tongue and could speak better in German than English sometimes.

Only downside is that my dad is litterally a Nazi!

Cinnabar was an orphan. He'd been adopted when he was just a baby, and his adoptive parents had no problem sharing the truth with him, rather than keeping it from him.

...And...that is a little scary.

Clarid scowled looking at the screen. It was infact scary. His dad was often angry and hypocritical. He was a strong military man who was often drunk and enjoyed showing he was boss.

Yeah and people wonder why I hate being at home with them.

Cinnabar seemed to understand, even without knowing the full story. He did a bit of thinking, and then came to a decision.

You should learn some self-defense...

Clarid frowned at that a bit. He wasn't a really violent or bad tempered person. He was more skittish than anything. He thought about it fr a second. Self-defence would be a useful thing to know.

Maybe…I don't really know any places where I live that offer classes. And I might not have enough money for classes.

Cinnabar frowned at his words, then gave it a bit more thought.

He typed but paused on the first part. Clarid wouldn't mind meetjng his friend, but with all the stories of kidnappings, murders and rapes Clarid was a little more than wary. And on top of that Clarid was fearful or meeting new people. Even if Cinnabar was his friend online he might not like him offline. He frowned debatig for a bit before typing.
