"Unfortunately, the goal to survive isn't the easiest thing if you think about it," Flutter responded quite bluntly. "There's a lot of strategy to it, and even then, one bad move, even if only a millimeter, and you can get severely injured or even killed. A lot of innocent people get killed in wars sometimes too, depending on the setting... It's rather sad, really. There's a lot more to military work though, I'm sure." She laughed a bit, realizing she made it sound too much like she knew it well (which she did). "Or, at least, that's what I was told."
"It makes sense, I'm sure that there are many things to do in a war...like being a doctor...there are times when a priest visits them. He mainly stays in the hospital though. The only war related show I like to watch is M.A.S.H. it's pretty interesting actually." he said and began to play again.
"M.A.S.H.... What is that? I have never heard of it." She thought deeply for a moment. Then again, she didn't watch too much on television besides the news and some random shows on discover channel once in a while. Or a stupid sitcom, even rarer. "Doctors I've heard, yes... That's pretty basic. But I've never heard of such a thing as a religious figure going to a war-site, whether it's the hospital or not. After all, that sounds sort of strange, doesn't it? Or is that just me?"
"M.A.S.H. is this one show about people at war. It's very interesting." he explained and continued to play his game. As he played, he listened to what Flutter had top say. "Well...the father just goes over to pray with the troops and give them all his blessing...you know, that kind of stuff." he said and saved the game. "It's not just you Flutter, many people find it strange that a father would even speak of war, even stranger for him to go over to one." he reassured.
"Now that I think about it..." Flutter trailed off, but only for a moment. "Why do people call such a person a 'Father'? Not all fathers are like a priest. The stereotypical priest is kind and warm-hearted, helping people and all that. Some fathers aren't like that. I can name a few." She laughed and shook it off soon after. "Either way... In a way it's nice, if the people believe in such a religion, it may help keep their spirits up. However... It isn't always helpful, I'd assume. Though, in general it is strange... Maybe he does it just to try to help lift their spirits."
"That's the only reason he does it. To give the troops hope and lift up their spirits." he said and shrugged. "I have no idea why they call a priest Father...I honestly have no clue why they call them that." he said and yawned quietly. "I'm not the most religious person, so blessings don't really mean anything to me. No offense to those who are very devoted to their religion." he quickly added.
"I'm not one of those religious people so I don't personally see anything wrong with what you said. Quite honestly, I feel the same. Blessings won't really save you from war or anything else for that matter. People die, and bad things happen. A blessing won't actually prevent that...." She knew this well, but the first thought that came to her mind caused her heart to sink slightly, and she fought to think of something else. His yawn seemed to save her. "Sleepy? I can go so you can rest if you want... I've enjoyed getting to see you again, though."
"True. A blessing only helps the mind of the person. It makes them feel safer when they really aren't." he said and smiled. "Bad things happen in life, and so do good things. People die everyday, and babies are born everyday too." he said happily. He shook his head at what she said. "I'm not really sleepy Flutter, just felt like yawning....I like it whjen you come see me...you're the only one who does..." he replied.
She felt her head lean on her shoulder, though it was mostly from his note about the yawn. "Why do you feel like yawning if you aren't sleepy though? From my own experience, I only yawn when I'm tired. Which, admittedly is a lot, but..." She blushed slightly, embarrassed by the fact. So, instead, she shook it off again. "I like coming to visit you. You're nice, and interesting. And so far, I learn something new each time I come!" She giggled a bit, though she did mean most of what she'd said. Going to visit made work easier, but he also was a fairly interesting person, and so far he'd been kind enough to let her into his house multiple times now.
"I feel lucky to have such a nice neighbor. I'm not at ease with most of my neighbors, but it's always easy when I come to say hello to you and stuff." Now that part was a lie- mostly. She didn't know her neighbors beside him, so in reality she couldn't compare him to them. Also, she got a tad nervous when she went there as she didn't want to seem too strange. |
Neer shrugged. "I don't know...I just yawn at random times to be exact." he said and smiled as he listened to what she was saying. "You really think so...well I'm happy to be able to make someone else happy. I like it when you surprise me with visits Flutter, I have fun when your around. When I'm alone, I really don't do much. I just stay in this house and read things online or look up things online like pictures of my favorite bands." he said and chuckled. "That's not so fun after a while." he said.
She fought a giggle, but to no avail. His wording had made her feel happy, though at the same time a slight bit of humor hit her at the moment as well. Still, she appreciated his sentiment- quite much, in fact. "Are you saying I should come over more often then I do already?" She laughed at her pathetic response, realizing it made no sense. "Or in general just more often, I mean. I just realized, so far I've come quite a lot since...yesterday."
"I do basically the same thing when I'm home. I sit and read online- though, admittedly, my reading abilities aren't always considered up to par... or look up silly pictures. I don't know much about music or anything, so I don't have favorite bands. I used to look up pictures of one though when-" She cut herself off. Stop doing this! Opening up is only a minimal part of this! Don't give him your life story again! Though, there was another reason she'd stopped. She didn't want to think about a painful memory again- her brother's death. |
"Yes, it would be nice to have someone to talk to...I enjoy your company." he said and chuckled. "Flutter, you've only come over three times. Once yesterday, twice today...I don't think that's a lot at all." he said and shook his head. Neer listened to her and wondered why she had abruptly stopped talking. He didn't want to ask since he didn't want to sound nosy. "You don't have favorite bands? Well...do you have a favorite type of music?" he asked her. He liked only techno, rock, and Japanese music. He considered himself a picky person for everything.
She was relieved that he hadn't questioned her explanation regarding her past with picture hunting, however she took a while to respond as she fought with herself to let go of that past piece of her life for that moment. She could cry about it later if needed. "Um... I don't really listen at all, personally..." She looked at her feet. It was true, though- she didn't comprehend much in music, even if she knew the mathematics involved in it. There were still too many intuitive, non-logic based concepts to understand, which she couldn't. "That's just how I am, I guess!"
Neer was surprised to hear her say that she didn't listen to any type of music. Then again people were all different and some hated music while others didn't spend a day without music. "That's right Flutter, that's just how you are. like I said...people are different. We're all unique in our own ways. Yes, I'm surprised to hear that you don't listen to music, but there are those people that are like you and don't listen to music, then there are those like me that love music, but there are those scary people that are crazy about music and never spend a day without listening to their music." he said and shrugged. "Those soon become deaf from hearing too much music too loud." he explained.
She listened to him carefully, taking in each word he said with a hint of confusion. However, the main thing that confused her overall was the last bit- however, thinking back on her earlier thoughts regarding her brother, it started to make sense. "Do they usually become deaf? I have met some who never go deaf even after doing such... Though I did often wonder how he didn't. Then again, I suppose it might be the same in many places. Guns are supposed to be fairly loud, so you would likely need something to keep it from breaking your ear drums."
"They usually do become deaf. People who go to shooting ranges, wear ear protection so that they don't shatter their eardrums while shooting. However...people at war don't have protection, so most of them do go deaf. The ones that most likely don't damage their hearing so badly, are those that work at the hospitals...the ones who tend to the sick and wounded." he explained. This was just a few things he learned while he was at school. Other things were told by his parents.
"I think it depends on the gun and the like," Flutter replied simply. "I'll admit, I get most of my information from my father since he's been in the military for a long time..." Finally a partial truth for once in the past ten minutes! Her father was in the military after all- the opposing, but otherwise it was fairly understandable. "He never went deaf though... For the many years he was on such a battlefield... Is that strange?"
"You are correct Flutter. It depends on the guns." he said and ruffled his own hair as he looked at her and began to think for a while. "Different guns tend to be louder...a shotgun is pretty loud, but not as loud as a machine gun. A sniper rifle is just as loud as a shotgun...or so I've been told." he said and shrugged.
She didn't know much about common military guns, so she hadn't an idea the different for real between a shotgun and a machine-gun, or any others for that matter. So, hearing him express the difference in sound was rather fascinating to her. "I see... That's rather interesting, actually." She smiled easily, trying to register the information so she could remember later on. "So whoever told you knows a lot about weapons I'm guessing? Do you have an interest in such things yourself?"
Neer looked at Flutter and shrugged. "I guess it is pretty interesting. My dad taught me those things...other things I learned from the school teachers." he explained to her. He listened to the last question that she asked him and shook his head. "Not really...I hate real wars, I like playing war games because they're fake wars and you really don't kill anyone. It's all just a bunch of pixels." he said to her.
"I wish real wars could be like that," Flutter replied softly. "The idea of actually fighting is sort of scary to me... But games about it are strangely fun, you know?" She continued to think about it. So, his dad had taught him along with school teachers, and he was against actual war. She'd likely have to remember that in the future. "How did your father know all those things? Was he in the military too or something?"
"I know....I would never go to the war...no matter what happened.." he said and shook his head. "War games are very fun because you aren't in any real danger...unlike an actual war were you really are in danger." he explained to her. "No....he had a friend who had been in the army...so his friend told him everything that he remembered doing..." he explained to her. "I don't remember too much about that friend of his. I only saw him twice...but I can't really remember much about him." he said and shrugged.
"I see...So it was a family friend." She smiled curiously. "I wonder what he was even fighting for...? Sometimes wars are fought for land...for safety...or for any number of things. It'd be interesting to know what he was fighting for. What anyone fights for, you know?" Flutter sat quietly, thinking as always. "Were you close to your father?"
"I don't know what he was fighting for...I never really bothered asking." he said and listened to what she was saying. Everything she said was true, many people fought for different reasons, he didn't like to ask people for their reasons since he believed that it was a personal question. "I was close to my family yes..." he said to her.
"It's good to be close to your family. I wish I could be closer to mine." Though in her case, most of that wish was an empty bottle of luck. Her brother was no longer alive, so getting along with him was a tad hard- and the only other family she knew of biologically was her father, who she was sure she'd never get along with. Still, at least she had her coworkers- they were like family to her. "Do you miss being around them though? I-I'm sorry, I may be asking too many personal questions but... I just get so curious. Don't answer if you don't want to, ever, okay?"
