Welcome to The Inn

There’s an old inn that sits outside the city. The cobbled stones that lead up to it speak of an older time, when the inn was full of life. Now, however, it is empty and cold. Only the occasional traveler takes refuge here, when the fog that surrounds the area becomes too thick to see through. When the fog lifts, the traveler sees that the inn is not in the same place that it was before. The forest becomes a desert. The desert becomes a lake. The lake becomes a snow-caped mountain.
The old inn has many powers and many more mysteries.

Come in and take refuge from the heavy fog.

The Inn Information

The Inn is currently the fog.

There are currently three stories to the inn.
✔The main floor is filled with tables with a bar in the front. There are cabinets behind the bar with food and drink. No matter how much is taken, it is always full. There is a small cabinet under the bar which will only open for Agatha Maine. It holds keys to the various rooms, which cannot otherwise be opened. Agatha gives keys to all new travelers.
--There is a kitchen through an archway behind the bar.

✔The second story has ten rooms. Each room changes in accordance to what the occupant wants and/or expects of it.

✔The cellar is currently locked. Not even Agatha can find the key.

✔Rooms:
Floor 1
1A – Agatha Maine
2A - Tindwyl A’’laria
3A – Anika Lècuyer / Maloch
4A – Ling Yin
5A - Mika Lewinsky
6A - Eleanor Kingston
7A - Asbjorn Leifsson

How This Works

EDIT::

Okay okay. Plot got the better of me. I'll make an honest to God chat thread some other day. I liked the idea of the inn too much to let it go to waste.

Sorry.

Rules

Literacy - Even though this is first-person writing, it's no excuse for chat speak. Basic spell-check and grammar are smiled upon!

Follow the TOS - PG-13 guys! If you have a profanity heavy character, please use dashes or something similar to block it out. Occasional profanity is fine.
Ex. “F---ing bees and their f---ing stingers are a bunch of f---ers!”

You must submit your profile BEFORE you join - Let us know who your characters are before you join!

✔Stay in character! – Remember, first-person or not, this is still a roleplay.

No pre-existing characters! – This means no characters that you have not created. This also means no fan-characters. If your characters are from a Harry Potter fan-fiction, you’re going to have to edit out any mention of anything J.K. Rowling has written.
(This does not mean that your character can’t read Harry Potter. That’s perfectly fine.)

Limit three character per person - If you prove to be very active you can have another character, but don't plan on it. If you want to retire a character and have a new one join in their place, that's fine. Just be sure to make the profile and send it to me!
---Can my mule have three characters? – I’m not going to say “no” outright, but that’s really straining the rules, guys. What matters most concerning this is if you’re honestly active with your mule like you are with your main.
---What if a character is possessed with another? – This counts as one! If you really honestly cannot play a character without another (for reasons like possession, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, or Siamese twins types of characters), they will only take up one character spot.

When your character leaves – If you want to make room for a new character, please make an exiting message for that character as well as PMing me. If your character leaves in a certain place, please note that he/she cannot come back until the inn goes to that place again.

Inactivity – If you have not posted for a month or more, you will be taken out of the “Travelers” list and be moved to the “Missing” list. If this happens, be aware that your character may be mentioned in future events concerning the mysteries of the inn. (Though he/she will never be played without your express permission.)

There is NO limit to the number of travelers – One of the mysteries of the inn is its ability to accommodate the growing number of occupants.

Appearance: Agatha is a white woman who looks older than she is and tends to have a tired expression on her face. Her hair reaches to the middle of her back, but she ties it up with a ribbon. It has grayed before its time. She wears a white cloth bandage around her eyes at all times. At 5' 6", Agatha is a slight woman, and physically very weak. Her skin is somewhat loose on her nearly anorexic body.

Agatha tends to wear long skirts, Victorian boots and long-sleeved blouses. They are all monochrome. She has a simple, dark wooden cane with her at all times.

Other Notes: Agatha is blind, but has other means of seeing. Sometimes. Because of this, she seems to have a peculiar connection to the inn. The inn allows her more access than other travelers.

Original Time-Period/Place: Taraque, 5th Era. A town close to what we might consider French in a fantasy world of my creation.

Appearance:
Anika: Anika is brown-skinned girl with wide dark-brown eyes. (Though this changes to a nearly-white color when Maloch speaks through her.) At 5' 4", she is a round young woman, though not quite over-weight. Anika has a tendency to smile even when she has nothing to smile about, which puts some people off. She has thin black hair that ends just past her ears.

Anika tends to wear colorful, layered clothing. She is rarely seen without a flat-cap.

Maloch: Maloch is... nearly indescribable. He rarely appears in his true form, even when he can, and tends to prefer varying forms of whatever is around him. Since he is around Anika, he tends to shift into the form of a humanoid shadow with glowing white eyes. He is a strong creature, though one could not tell by looking at him. He is capable of shape-shifting, though none of his forms would convince anyone he was normal by any standards. He is also capable of flight and bending/moving in ways humans cannot.

Other Notes: Maloch is an entity that once served as a guardian for a place very similar to the mysterious fog that engulfs the inn as it travels. He inhabits the body of Anika because he cannot maintain a corporeal form in a stable plane of existence. He only comes out of her body as his own physical form when the inn is inside the fog.

Wears a giant pair of tinted goggles which make it hard to see her eyes and tell her expression. Usual clothing includes tight-fitting turtlenecks, loose jeans, long sleeves, and a collection of jangling hoops on her long, tapering ears.

Other Notes: Tindwyl grew up on a reserve in the north of Mayete, her home country with a human majority, but left as soon as she could for university in the city. She currently rooms with her best friend, dwarf Jakabok Fretch. Tindwyl studies xenolinguistics.

Appearance: Ling’s a tiny Asian girl who loves oversized clothes and her giant hipster glasses. She has a very young, childish look to her, which her quiet, sweet voice reinforces, and isn’t very physically strong. She keeps her hair short, a little above shoulder length. Here’s a picture reference.

Other Notes: For two years, Ling has been hired by the mysterious organization BIO as an freelance serial killer after word came to them of the several murders she committed in the alleys of her hometown. Her greatest fear is being caught and locked away, at least, next to public speaking. The only person who knows of her addiction is her best friend Marisa—assuming Marisa isn’t a figment of Ling’s poisoned animation. Ling also enjoys Internet memes, anime, and sci-fi movies. She has a stutter and a touch of social anxiety disorder, especially concerning speech, so she’ll be writing most of her responses on a whiteboard I make her carry around, at least until she gets comfortable.

Name: Mika Lewinsky

Age: Twenty-eight

Gender: Male

Original Time-Period/Place: Northern Washington

Appearance: Often likened to a grumpy albino Swedish bear. Mika is huge, broad-shouldered, round-faced, and usually wearing a frown. He throws on whatever he can in the morning. His hair is thick, messy, and pale brown-blond, his eyes clear gray, and his skin almost translucent. Mika’s aura is blue. He has a rather imposing presence thanks to his size and scowl.

Other Notes: Dreams the future, in a very disjointed, petty way. He’s been going through a spike of psychic power recently, the reason for which nobody can figure out, which results in a lot of nightmares and very little sleep. It probably has something to do with the little redheaded dead girl who seems to live in his head. Her name is Caroline.

Appearance: Of middling height and with the combination of brown hair and eyes, Eleanor is normal in every way. You could even say she was sort of bland. Her hair isn't too long or too short (shoulder blade length) and she tans easily; as a compromise with the fact that she can be bland she often wears bright and cheerfully colored clothing. Most times she can be fond wearing red slippers with an ankle length, full circle skirt that is gold colored with a red apron over the skirt and a white blouse with a red and gold bodice. Her hair is pulled back into a ponytail with red ribbons. Eleanor would certaintly look out of place in a mundane setting like a grocery store but she spends most of her time in a village of her peers, all of them creatures from folk lore, where her bright and unusual outfits are the least garish of the lot.

Other Notes: Eleanor herself is an innkeeper but has decided to travel and has left her inn in the charge of her apprentice. She is also a witch of some renown where she is from most particularly for her skill in healing.

Appearance: Asbjorn's closely cropped hair and eyes are uncharacteristically dark, considering his native people, but very common, pale skin. He isn't quite as tall or heavily built as his brothers in arms, but what he lacks in stature, he more than makes up for in speed and intellect.

Other Notes: Asbjorn is one of the younger sons of a low level housecarl, named Leif. He has used his small title to gain himself a mid-level mounted officer position in a mercenary company composed of heavy cavalry and infantry.

The Inn

Fog settles around the inn. As the grey haze clears a field of yellow and brown expands around it in all directions. In the distant east there are mountains that block the setting sun. Its last rays filter through the peaks of the mountains before slowly disappearing behind. Stars dot the sky, now visible that the fog has cleared. In the south there are dots of light that might be a town, but it is far too distant to tell. Only the sounds of nocturnal insects echo in empty field. The inn seems to have landed in a place without rhyme or reason, as usual. Its doors open to the world, inviting all who cross it inside.
----------

Anika
Anika rubs her chest I really, really hate that part. Do you think Maloch does it on purpose? Whenever he goes back it feels like I'm going to explode or something. He's hardly even got a body, what the heck does he need so much space in there for, anyway?
----------

Agatha
He sounded like a decent enough fellow, considering what he is. If he meant to hurt you, darling, I don't think he'd only begin now. I find it more likely that something about these walking clouds do it. Would you like some tea?

----------

Anika
No thanks, Miss Maine. It hurts to swallow. Do you... Do you need any help?
----------

Agatha
I'm quite capable, thank you darling. Agatha is rather snappish about this.

They've been wandering for an hour, easily. The sun is almost down and Ling was the only one who found any comfort in the stars fading into the fabric of the sky. It's a relief to see the solid shape of a building.

Mika
Mika looks around suspiciously. If there's one house, there must be others. Let's not stop here. We came this way before, it wasn't here.

Tindwyl
We did not. Unless you've been keeping track what tree stumps we pass. Besides, it's not a house, it's an inn. You can just tell. Unless you want to sleep in a hollow tree tonight, we're going to have to stop here. Tindwyl stomps past him into the clearing, towards the building.

Mika
Wait-- oh, come on. Mika gives a low, pointed sigh, and follows her.

Ling
Ling stumbles after them, almost tripping over her laces. She'd like to ask what Mika's talking about, but it'll have to wait until they're inside.

Tindwyl
The inn is warmer than the air outside. Tindwyl shivers and unwraps her scarf, tossing it over the back of a nearby chair, before she's said a word. Where's this, exactly? Can we stay here? I don't have any money. What money do you take? Ling carries around money. She turns to the others just venturing over the threshold. Hey! You brought your wallet, right?

Ling
N- n- no.

Tindwyl
Tindwyl turns back to the two women standing near the bar with a helpless, what-can-you-do expression and a shrug.

Anika

Anika looks up at incoming travelers and smiles at them. Hey there. You're welcome to stay, but if you're headed somewhere you probably should just... go there.
Anika pauses, wondering how to continue without sounding completely insane. She eventually opens her mouth to continue, but Agatha cuts her off.
----------

Agatha

Don't waste your breath, Anika. It'll be better served elsewhere. Her face turns in Tindwyl's direction, still stirring her tea. No money, darling. The inn will take you if it wants you. If it doesn't, then you won't be staying either way. I certainly don't have any control over it.

Agatha lays the spoon down on a towel and feels around below the bar for the drawer. She pulls the handle and it slides open.
Well, the inn will take you. Agatha runs her hands through a jangle of keys and pulls three out. I hope you're able to enjoy your stay. Tea?

----------

Anika

Anika's smile fades some.
O-oh. That's how it works? How come you didn't tell me that? What if the the inn hadn't taken me?
----------

Agatha
You have Maloch, darling. I'm not certain the inn would have had much of a choice.

----------

Anika
You think he could really... ? Anika trails off as her gaze returns to the newcomers with a sheepish smile. Anyway. She continues, considerably quieter than before. I'm Anika. She sticks out her hand to the person closest to her. Welcome to the inn.

Tindwyl
O-kay. It's not quite a you're-insane tone, because Tindwyl has heard odder, but it still seems strange coming out of the mouth of the matter-of-a-fact innkeeper. When the episode with the keys is over, she shrugs, and goes over to the bar. Good to know we're acceptable. I don't drink tea unless you've got some of that grave-dust stuff hidden somewhere back there...

Mika
Don't listen to her. She's talking about drugs. Out of some strange sense of responsibility, he turns to Ling You want tea or something?

Ling
Ling shakes her head, flushing just at the acknowledgement. She hops up on one of the barstools, propping her head on her hand.

Mika
I'll take tea. With cream. And sugar.

Agatha:

Anika takes the finished tea to Mika before Agatha has a change to take it herself. There is a hint of displeasure on Agatha’s feature when she hears the tinkle of ceramic as Anika takes the cups away. Agatha says nothing about it, however.

It there are narcotics in this place, they have not come to my attention. I suggest steering clear of anything that will affect your perception. The inn does enough of that on its own. It doesn’t need your help.

Agatha sits down on a chair behind the bar. She lowers her voice for Lin as she speaks. Someone very quiet is sitting right there. She gestures in Lin’s direction with her cane. Are you alright, darling?

----------

Anika

She hands Mika his tea. I hope there’s enough sugar. And cream. If not, I can go get some more.

Her attention turns to Tindwyl. You do drugs? Doesn’t that… scare you? What if something happens to you because of it? What if you do something stupid because of it? What if someone does something to you because of it?

Ling
Ling looks at Agatha like a spooked horse, recoiling from the bar a little, despite the woman's soothing tone. After a moment she shakes her head at herself, relaxing again with an exhale. She takes out a black sharpie automatically, and gets through the first letters of I'm fine, thank you very much. I don't like to talk, before she flushes furiously and puts the cap back on the marker. Oh. Right. Blind.

Ling clasps her hands in her lap, and manages to force out, with audible effort: I'm sorry. I um. I'm fine. Th- thank you.

Mika
Hrn. This appears to be a form of thanks. He takes the cup with a minimal nod and doesn't spare Anika another glance, staring into open space.

Tindwyl

Pft. No. I don't do anything serious anyways, so it doesn't matter. No different than alcohol except people think you're a social butterfly if you say "I had a drink with James on Friday" and if you say "I did some smoke with James on Friday" they go all purity-of-the-body's-temple on you. I mean, not in my town, but where I grew up they did. Whatever, everybody has like, one story of the stupid s--- they did when they were high, but I don't know anybody who ever threw themself off a f---ing building because of a little grave-dust tea.

Tindwyl's voice has been getting steadily faster and more defensive as she speaks; finally she waves a dismissive hand and sits back from the bar with a surly expression on her face.

Agatha

Agatha hears the squeak of the marker on the white board and frowns slightly. ‘Is the girl soft in the head?’, she wonders. When Lin finally speaks, Agatha believes she doesn’t sound [i]at all fine.

If you need anything, you may always come to find me.
Agatha’s voice lowers even further, though it is more a sign of secrecy than anger.
I know what it is like to be the pariah.

----------

Anika

Anika smiles at Mika and begins to say ‘you’re welcome’, but is far too worried it will sound sarcastic as he didn’t precisely say ‘thank you’.

O-oh, I didn’t mean anything like that, or to sound like I’m… preaching or anything. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything about your purity. Or anyone’s purity. I didn’t mean corrupting it or anything.

It’s too late for that, sweet.

Anika ignores Maloch’s thought and sits down at a table with her hands folded in her lap. I don’t drink, either.

After a short pause Anika changes the topic.
I hope you weren’t headed anywhere important. Sometimes the doors of the inn don’t open for a while. And when they do, sometimes… sometimes it’s not where it was before.
----------

Agatha

It’s never where it was before. The inn does what it likes without our blessing or curse.

Eleanor

A young witch entered the inn in what seemed like a hurry and shut the door behind her. That was some frightful fog, I must say! She exclaimed. It was only then she noticed the other people in the inn and with a blush she bobbed her head in greeting.

'scuse my abruptness, folks, but where might I be?

( OOC: Hellloooo new persoon~ <3 What would you prefer I call you? :D )

Ling
Ling nods distractedly, staring back down at the counter as though the grain of the wood is the most interesting thing she's seen all week. Th- she starts, waits a few moments, and tries again, considering each word carefully: Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

It's less sincere than it might seem. The lack of people reaching out to her like this has made her wary of it. It's simply not the way things are; and Ling has a certain reverance for the status quo.

Tindwyl
Until Anika gets on to a new subject, Tindwyl ignores her. At that point, she turns to speak to her again. Well, we were trying to get back home. Sometimes these odd things happen... She waves a hand dismissively. You wouldn't understand it. And anyways--

When the door swings open, shuts loudly, all heads turn in that direction. Mika, shaken out of his reverie, glowers across the room. Tindwyl props her head on her hands, smirking.

Tindwyl
Oh, look, another one. I wonder how many other people there are wandering hopelessly lost in this f---ing place. Where're you coming from? Doesn't sound like any accent I ever heard.

Mika
Mostly to himself, in a mutter: You didn't know what I meant when I said "Polish," either.

Tindwyl
Shut up, dumba--. We aren't talking about me.

Eleanor

Eleanor eyed the occupants of the room taking measure of each of them before she made her way up to the bar. She carefully moved her skirts out of the way and took a seat facing the three sitting beside her instead of facing the bar.

I'm Eleanor and I'm from.. well, the Village. We don't actually have a name for where we live.

Tindwyl
Tindwyl laughs, her grin growing by several teeth. Isn't that a coincidence. You're from the Village, we're out of the City. Well. Sort of. I'm from Kirin State actually and he's from...She struggles to remember the name for a second. Washington. Anyways, now you're stuck here, apparently.

Mika
In the spirit of some sort of protection-- or, more likely, as competition to Tindwyl-- Mika leans around her to talk to Eleanor. You aren't stuck here. If you need a place to stay the night you're fine, as long as "the inn will take you." He puts large air quotes around the words. Apparently there's a risk you won't be able to get back wherever you're going. Or something. If you need to get somewhere right away they say you should leave.

Mika goes back to his teacup, muttering under his breath. Don't trust it at all.

Eleanor

It had seemed odd.. Her voice drifted off as she began to stare off into space. A moment later she blinked and continued on with what she had been saying. That fog had seemed odd.

She turned to face the bar and smiled at the two women there. Would it be possible to have a hot mug of cocoa? If the inn isn't inclined to accept me I'd like to have a drink before I wander off again. This traveling business makes me thirsty. Eleanor seemed to have taken what the man had told her at face value and accepted it matter-of-factly.
