Name: Derek Vlasmir
Origins: Human
Age: 19
Human Appearance:
Merman Appearance:
Bio: Derek grew up by the sea. His father was a fisherman and his mother a weaver for the village. However, despite living along the sand, Derek never learned how to swim. That is, not until he saw a woman in the water every morning and evening when the sun rose and set. She was beautiful - hair the color of light coral, skin of milky white. For this woman, he learned to swim. After a few weeks, he swam out to meet her, to see what village she belonged to for he had never seen her in the village before.
Little did he know, she was a sea-witch.
Taking him below the surface, the sea-witch cursed the boy and turned him into a merman, never to walk the sandy shores again. This was her curse on his family, the family who continuously took from the sea but never gave anything back. The family who long ago killed her husband when he got caught in one of their nets.

Borealis sighed, a thin trail of bubbles streaming from her lips, as she sailed gracefully through her master's home. All was quiet and dark; night had just fallen and her master and mistress had gone to bed. Most of the other servants had left for their homes, or gone to their living quarters in the attic or basement of the coral mansion.
Not Borealis, though. She did not often go to bed so soon. Not when there were was so much else she could go do. Though she had not been fond of her parent's occupation, she had inheireted their sense of curiousity, adventure and wonder. Her work as a maid in a nobel home was boring on good days, and downright unbearable on bad days. She needed to be out and about, but since her parents deaths, Borealis had had no other choices.
Living underwater, it wasn't hard to leave a perfect coral home without being noticed. So, when Borealis snuck out, she did not worry about being caught. Once out of the home, she took a deep breath, enjoying the evening. Down so deep in the water, it was hard to tell the weather of the world above, but tonight the water around her churned in a slight current, much like an underwater wind. Borealis knew that above her head, over the ocean, a wild storm was brewing.

Derek grimaced as he squirmed in the water. Flopping and thrashing around like a fish out of water - or to put it in truth, a human IN water - Derek tried to get the mechanism of his new tail figured out. The 'gill thing', as Derek called it, he had figured out within the first few moments of the curse. It was only the bloody tail he couldn't figure out.
After awhile, Derek simply laid in the ocean, panting heavily and trying to catch his breath. 'This whole moving thing is going to be tougher than I ever could have imagined... Bloody sea-witch..' Derek thought miserably as he stared up at the dark sky through the depths of the ocean.
Would his parents wonder where he was?
Would they notice him missing?
Had the sea-witch erased the memory of him on Earth with her curse?
Had she bewitched their minds and caused them to believe he had died?
Derek pondered these thoughts and more as he let the ocean carry him with a sigh.

Borealis, though she was well educated on how to swim smoothly through her watery world, liked the sensation of being carried on the current. She knew humans couldn't be lifted off their feet by their winds; they could never float on the breeze as she could... sorta. It was much nicer, much freer in the world beneath the sea.
Like the human world, the merfolk knew the story of the Little Mermaid princess. Though, to the world above it was just a fairy tale, the merfolk knew it to be the truth. Oppinions of Queen's youngest sister were varied. Some saw her as a lovestruck fool, who'd taken an awful risk and died for it, and some saw her as a honorable heroine. Borealis was convinced that the little princess had been a fool, but of course, that had been before her time. Before the current Queen, the eldest sister of the 'little mermaid', was queen. No matter. Fairy tales or cold facts would not change Borealis' oppinion: the sea was the only place worth living in. She was comfortable in her tail and with her gills.
As Borealis floated along in the cool, night sea, a glimmer above her caught her attention. She stopped, letting the current billow around her. She concentrated on the spot, trying to see more clearly what it was. Borealis suddenly realized it was someone in distress. She could tell the person was distressed: they were terrible at swimming. No mermaid or merman was that bad at swimming unless they were hurt, sick or just very young. Either way, it was probably not the safest for them to be out at night. Borealis swam to investigate.
