Alice smiled when she saw Léan floating out on the water. It was good to see him relax again, which meant that the other merman was probably long gone. Alice couldn't help but wonder if he was aware of what was around him. Would he be able to see if a person was near or if a shark swam beneath him? She bit her lip worried, but Léan lived in the ocean, he would know the signs of those things right?
Léan's eyelids drifted closed, slightly. He lifted his head, meeting her eyes spot-on. He knew she was there...he was just too lazy to swim into shore at the moment.
Alice smiled when Léan looked at her, knowing her exact location. She gave him a friendly wave and debated swimming out with him. She had never been that fond of water where she couldn't touch, but there was never a better chance to try than now.
She lowered her self down into the water and gracefully began swimming out to him, it was only a few yard out that she could no longer touch, and the thought made her heart start racing, but hopefully talking to Léan would calm it back down. Once she was close enough she treaded water as she spoke, "So i take it your little scouting trip went well?" she asked hopeful. |
"He is gone. He went north, to find better territory," Léan confirmed, idly. He was floating on his back with ease, his tail sparkling in the sun. "I don't usually make such violent stakes on territory...I'm nomadic, you see."
She tilted her head as she thought, it sounded familiar like he had said that before to her. "If you are nomadic, then why did you fight so hard for this territory? why didn't you just leave and find another place?" She asked quietly as she watched his tail glimmer in the sunlight.
"I am tired of wandering around?" Léan suggested, pointedly. "I have been trying to find a place to settle down in for the past few months. I'm terrible at defending territory, so...I've been frightened to even try."
Alice looked at him, it wasn't exactly the answer she thought she'd get. "Well, if i was able to, i'd help you." She offered, honestly. She considered Léan a friend no matter how much he didn't think her one.
"The boat would be a great help, running it through the area every once in a while..." Léan offered, softly. He was hoping she didn't feel useless--he hated making others feel like that. He was an independent sort of person...but that didn't mean he wanted everyone else to feel uncomfortable.
"I think i can manage that." She gave him a smile. At least she could do something helpful for him. Alice leaned back and tried to float but it didn't work, she slipped under the surface. When she poked her head back up, she spit water from her mouth and looked at Léan, her face rather red. Her arms were getting tired but she didn't want to head back to shore just yet, and without being able to just relax and float, Alice decided to suck it up for a bit longer and kept treading the water.
Léan chuckled when she slipped underwater, and then shook his head. "You are doing it wrong. Here...lay back..."
For the next few minutes, he proceeded to teach her how to easily float on her back and relax in deeper water. This was often how he sunned himself out at sea. |
Alice smiled, it was nice hearing him laugh for once. He had a rather nice voice, she kind of wished he would talk more. Then he came to her side and helped her float. He willingly touched her which made Alice even happier, it was nice to know he was getting more comfortable with her. After a while she had it down. "Wow, this isn't that bad. I can see why you do this." She grinned at him as her face flushed. "Thanks."
Léan nodded, solemnly. He didn't seem to realize what the contact meant, or what his laughter meant. He wasn't a very social person to begin with. Having a friend was a slightly new experience for him.
Alice's smile faded, as she looked at him. She let her body sink under the water and she began treading as she looked at him. "Is everything alright?" She asked. He had a somewhat serious look on his face and she was worried she had down something wrong again. Whatever the case, Alice just wanted to know what she had to do to fix the problem and get a smile on his face. He probably looked amazing when he smiled.
"Oh...no, nothing's wrong," Léan assured her, nodding again. He wasn't a cheery person. His brother was a little different...he had an identical twin. But, he himself was a rather reserved person. Especially emotionally.
Alice looked at him. "Okay if you say so." She rather liked him and didn't want him to be upset over something, especially if she did it. Her cheeks reddened when she caught herself staring at him. She looked away quickly, just as her one arm was starting to get a cramp. She grumbled, annoyed with her bodies inability to keep working. After taking a long breath, Alice leaned back and tried floating once more. She almost sank at first, but remembered what Léan had said and fixed it so she floated. Alice looked over at him and grinned. "I did it all by myself that time." She smiled.
Léan, thankfully, did not catch her staring. If she couldn't keep herself from staring, though, he would most definitely catch her at some point in the future. He was just that unobservant, at times. He glanced at her and flashed her a very brief smile. "Good."
Alice's smile grew when she saw his cute but brief smile. She proud of herself for getting a smile out of him, even though it had been a quick one. A question struck her as she floated there next to him. "Why did you pick here to be your more permanent residence? There is an awful lot of humans around here." she turned her head and looked at him.
"I happen to have a human on my side, now...and as long as said human doesn't end up betraying me, said human is a valuable ally of mine..." Léan explained, flashing her a pointed glance. "I do not have many friends."
She smiled as she looked at him. "Well, I wouldn't betray you, ever." She took a breathe and dunked her head back letting her body follow as she did a sort of somersault in the water. when she broke the surface she was still smiling at him, but the smile faded. "Treading water really kind of sucks." She laughed nervously as her other limbs began to ache.
"I suppose it does. Floating is much easier than what you humans do to swim," Léan hummed, thoughtfully. "And I would hope you wouldn't...I don't dole out my trust that easily to people, so it's a shame when it's betrayed."
Alice looked at him, forgetting about her aching muscles. "I wouldn't betray you. I don't have too many friends either. The ones i do have i value, i wouldn't even think of doing something to hurt them." She wanted him to understand how much she really did care for him. She sighed and leaned back to float again and let her muscles relax.
Léan nodded, seeming to understand. "All right...I will hold you to that." He stared up at the sky, his eyes rather deep in thought. "I do hope you realize that you are the first human I have actually ever intelligently spoken to in all my life?" he commented, suddenly.
Alice blinked a few times before she actually registered what he had said. "No, I didn't realize that." She informed him. "But i feel rather privileged now." She smiled. She really did feel lucky for actually being able to talk with Léan and becoming his friend. She floated happily there next to him.
Léan's tail flicked back and forth absently. He was not fond of humans in general, but this one seemed peaceful, so she was an exception to this hatred...as long as she didn't betray him. He seemed much more relaxed than he usually was--he wasn't watching her like a hawk.
Alice glanced over at Léan. She wondered what he was thinking. She still didn't really know much about his life or culture so it could have been anything. A small part of her hoped he was thinking about her. She felt her face flush at the mere thought. She looked back up to the pretty blue sky. It was hard enough getting Léan to trust her, there was no way he'd ever have real feelings for her, but you couldn't blame a girl for hoping. a smile crossed her face as she closed her eyes and just floated.
