Alice pushed her hair back off her face with a smile before she looked over at him. "Yeah, i like storms too." Almost on cue, a crack of lightning split the sky causing Alice to stumble back and fall into the water beside Lean. But she giggled at herself even as her cheeks turned red. "Sorry."
Léan looked quite amused. "Well. You should learn to become more coordinated in the water or I will freely start laughing at your blunders," he warned, playfully.
Alice grinned seeing the playful look on his face. "Go ahead and laugh. I've always been on the clumsy side of things." Her face reddened slightly. "Besides, it'd be nice to hear you laugh for once." She gave her hand a playful push and hit Lean in the chest with a tiny splash of water, barely distinguishable from the rain.
"I don't laugh that often," Léan agreed, not seeming to mind or even notice the splash. "I have no one else to hear it, usually. Plus, I'm not much of a giggly person...as you can probably tell..."
He acted like a miserable old coot most of the time...a miserable old coot who had a teasing, playful side. |
Alice smiled at him. "Well, I hope i'll get to hear that laugh of yours at some point." She grinned. She could see the playful side of him hiding. She just hoped it wouldn't hide forever. "Besides, I'll probably give you plenty to laugh at."
((i got tired of two colors, its a pain in the rear end)) |
"I don't have much of a sense of humor," Léan countered, simply. "I suppose you could say I have a typical male's sense of humor. I see someone fall, or slip, or mess up...and that's funny to me..." He seemed to be getting tired. He was still injured, just not so much so. Some sleep would do him good.
"Well I make enough of those types of blunders, that's for sure." She smiled at him, the rain still falling steadily. She let the smile fade as she looked at him. "You seem rather tired. Maybe you should go rest." She went to put her hand on his shoulder, but stopped herself, still afraid that she would startle him with the contact.
Léan nodded, slowly righting himself again in the water. "Perhaps you should get some rest, as well," he commented, with a nod. "I should be back here later on, after I've gotten some sleep...goodbye, for now."
He turned and dipped into the water, slowly floating away. |
"...bye." she said softly as she watched him swim away. Once he was out of sight, Alice turned back and walked up to shore. When she made it up the beach she slowly walked up to the house and inside.
"Alice! Where have you been?" Her mother almost shouted as she entered the house. "I was at the beach okay?" She didn't want to deal with the overprotective mother that kept her on a one foot leash. Alice disappeared to her room. She took a nice warm shower and rinsed out her swimsuit. Once she was clean and clothed she fell onto her bed and drifted off to sleep quickly. She woke up a few hours later, feeling better. The storm had passed and it was night time. An almost full moon lit up the sky. Alice pulled her suit back on and shivered as the damp fabric touched her skin. Then she pulled on a tee shirt and quietly crept out her door. Everyone was in bed by now so she was easily able to sneak back down to the moonlight beach. She walked along the beach in the surf, wondering if Lean was going to show up. |
Léan did show up, just a few minutes after she stepped outside onto the beach. He looked like he'd gotten some sleep, but not enough to ebb away the weariness he was feeling. That was probably going to stay until he was fully healed and he no longer had any hints of his injuries left on his tail or torso.
Alice saw him and smiled as she pulled her shirt off and tossed it onto the sand a few feet away. She waded out into the water to him. "So how are you feeling now?" She asked quietly with a small smile.
"Fine..." Léan replied, idly. He ventured just a bit closer. "My injuries have tired me out. I won't feel too much better until they have all healed..."
"Yeah well you took quite a beating." She remember how scared she had been when she saw him all bloody on the beach. She shivered at the thought. "I'm just glad you are healing and you haven't gotten any worse." She wrapped her arms around her self as she stood in the water. A small smile tugged at her lips when Lean got a little closer.
"You should have seen him," Léan commented, gruffly. "I'm glad I didn't lose anything...I met a mermaid once who lost a finger defending her territory from a pair of violent mermen..." He shook his head, then, and glanced up at the sky.
Alice shivered at the thought. "Well, I'm glad you won." She offered as she looked up at the sky with him. "So, i have a question..." She paused seeing if he would stop her or let her continue. "Do you know anyone that was once human?" Her face reddened at the thought of what he said earlier, but she tried to ignore it.
"My brother took on a mate that was once human. A male," Léan replied, quietly. "I met him only twice. He had terminal blood cancer...he died just a short while ago, from what I have heard."
Again Alice felt bad for asking her question. "Oh, I-I'm sorry." She said quietly. She wasn't too sure of what to say. She rubbed her arm nervously as she tried to think of something else to talk about but nothing was coming to mind.
Léan shrugged, chewing his lip slightly. He was aware of how heartbroken his brother must have been after the death of his second, and perhaps last, mate. He had been deeply, deeply in love with the human he had turned. He was unsure if his brother could even think about loving anyone else, ever again.
Alice stood there uncomfortably. She saw that Léan was lost in thought and she didn't know if she should break that concentration or just let him be. It was probably a touchy subject. From what she understood, after his mother died, Léan only had his brother. Alice slowly dropped to her knees in the water, letting the ocean level rise to her neck so she was more on level with Léan now. An idle thought slipped through her mind as she sat there. She wondered if she would ever become a mermaid, would her tail be the same pretty color that Léan's was... her face flushed at the thought and she shook her head to rid of it.
Léan really had never mentioned having a father. It wasn't clear if he didn't know who his father was and hadn't grown up with one...or if something else was going on. He sighed, suddenly. "I must be boring you. I apologize."
"Oh no!" Alice shook her head. "I'm sorry if you thought that, i just feel like every time i ask you a question it lands on a touchy subject and then i feel bad." She admitted nervously. "You are by no means boring," She gave him a smile. "I'm just worried i am going to say or do something wrong." She said honestly.
"I don't have a pleasant past, or pleasant stories to tell," Léan explained, idly. "Most things are kind of touchy...but, I know I can be a bit boring and a bit of a...what do you call it...party pooper?"
Alice giggled as he found the words. "Yes that's the term, but you aren't one. I find you very interesting." she smiled at him. "Honestly, i would love to know more about you and your people, mostly you though, but like i said i just don't really know what is okay to ask." she admitted shyly. It was true enough though.
"Just ask anything you want," Léan suggested, shrugging. "I'll answer what I can and what I want to. There are no bad questions. Just go for it..."
Alice stared at him. It wasn't exactly the answer she had been expecting. "Well ,that's pretty open." She laughed a bit. "Well, where can i start? Um, so where all have you lived before? Which spot is your favorite?" It was as good a question as any to start with.
