The carmel curls bounced around her shoulders as she bounded down the stairs from her room into the Saloon. Her blue eyes darted around the room and pretty little mouth frowned as she saw her father fingering with a corkscrew and a bottle of whiskey.
She put a hand on her hip and leaned against the doorway. "Dadee, don't you reckon it's a bit early for Whiskey?" She snapped. He looked up and gave a little jump when she spoke, he obviously thought he was getting away with a nip before breakfast.
"You're getting on at me and you're going to go into town wearing that." He gestured to her outfit, a pair of faded blue denim shorts that stopped mid-thigh and a short-sleeved black shirt, buttoned just so you couldn't see her clevage but no more. She had on her mother's neck tie and her favourite black Steston hat, she wore her mid-calf white Kicks. She looked herself up and down, "Yea, I am."
"You should dress like a proper woman, like your cousin Annabel-"
"And you should stop with the Gin and Whiskey runs before nine thirty, Dadee. Annabelle is a sissy, scared of dirt and horses, the things our way of life is built on yet she reaps the rewards." She wandered forward and prised his fingers open to remove the bottle. "Get your lazy ass out of that Arm Chair and out to the Bull Ring, Old Testo is giving Bert and Rick a run for their money. By the way where is Samuel?"
He pulled himself up off the arm chair and into a standing position. "You're brother's off courting Ms Lex down in by Tavern, took SilverString with him."
She smiled to herself imagining her brother riding SilverString and messing up his date. "Well, Daddy, I'm away out!"

Sel whistled 'Lone Cowboys' to himself and SoulDancer, it was his second night up on the mountain with only Soul, himself and Hoodie as company... His father had promised him a new herding partner soon, but here in Texas... it was hard to find a cowherder that matched Sel's skills and ability.
Hoodie barked in his unusual high pitched Border Collie bark, Soul pricked his ears forward and snorted, "Easy boy... what's wrong Soul?" Sel preffered calling his horse, or rather his mom's horse, Soul than Dancer. it was darker and more promising than Dancer. He got his rifle ready and looked around nothing to be seen, he clucked Soul onwards. Soul switched gracefully into a smooth canter with Hoodie keeping up in front he rounder the cows and saw for signs of distress or foxes or something that would've made Hoodie bark... but he saw nothing so regained his post.

"Well, Howdy, Ms Denvers." Little Mrs Pottersburg hollered from her little Grocery store's porch which she was sweeping.Mrs Pottersburg was 5"3 of pure sunshine in a petticoat and a straw sunhat. Her face, a web of 78 years worth of wrinkles with inset brilliant blue eyes and ever smiling lips, was a pretty little picture. Her husband Rodger Pottersburg was a tall, broad shouldered man with wispy white hair side combed to the left. He was the kind of man who never smiled unless he was mocking someone. How the two ever made a connection was unfathomable to Juliette.
"Howdy, Mrs Pottersburg, hot out ain't it?" Juliette smiled at her as she approached the little wooden store. The Grocerie consisted of some fruit and veg and some bottled beverages, butter and packaged and processed meats. The usual foods to be found in a grocers. Mr and Mrs Pottersburg had owned the store way before Juliette was born.
"Ain't it just? Kyle thought it best to take out Clarissa," her grandson Jackson was around Juliette's age and had been courting the daughter of the local preacher, Clarissa Everet, "in the Cadilac and head down to the Rush Creek to cool off. You come to town riding Spirit?"
"I sure did and I'm mighty thirsty, any Cola in the fridge?" She smiled as she clicked her heels against the porch on her way into the store.

20 minutes later Hoodie barked for the third time, Sel was getting really agitated and shushed the dog. "Stay boy." He clucked Soul onwards while Hoodie kept watch on the hill. He rounded the cows, did a quick count then left Hoodie and explored the perimeters. Something must be out there, Hoodie always barks for a reason.
He slowed Soul down to walk and walked round the wood then into the wood, thats when he saw it. The swish of a tail, a white tail... a horse tail? Was there a wild horse? Or another herder?
Sel tried to followe the horse, he quickened Soul's pace and set up a chase. But the white tail was faster and swifter, more agile than poor old Soul. Soul still had the power in him but Sel decided to give up for now.

Just as Mrs Pottersburg wrenched off the bottle cap on the ice cold cola and Juliette had had a fairly large swig of the delicious liquid James Rodgers and Chance Teston wandered in out of the heat of the eleven o'clock sunshine.
James Rodgers was a tall, muscle bound Rebel, ripped jeans and a pair of baseball boots on as well as a t-shirt. He looked so much like his father it was like you were looking at him, hawk-like nose, thin lips and wide eyes. A scar ran fron his hairline down to his jawbone along the side of his face, no one knew how he got it.
Chance on the other hand was slightly smaller than James, but was ten times more handsome a Roman nose, natural lips - not too thin not too fat - his eyes sparkled a divine emerald, Juliette could very well get lost in them if she desired to. He was slightly muscular, in the right places, always wearing faded jeans with slight rips at the knees along with his kicks, smart long-sleeved shirt accompanying the outfit of course, today it was pristine white. Chance wore his light brown Stetson at the height that you could still see those wonderful eyes. James wore no hat but let his long black hair be swept into a ponytail and out of his face.
"Howdy, Gentlemen. What brings you to my little shop of wonders?" Mrs Pottersburg hollered from behind the counter still holding the bottle opener.
James and Chance smiled, "Morning Mrs Potters." Chance tipped his hat downwards in the Cowboy equiveleant to a bow. James strode to the counter and spun a quarter on the surface, "Got any Pastries? Bakery's shut from the account of Madame Rose's grandmother passing this week."
Rose's Bakery was always the best place for...baking, pastries, cake, pies, she had the works and they were all the best you would ever taste. It was sad to hear Ol' Heidi had succumbed to the Cancer that had been troubling her for the past countless months.
James and Mrs Pottersburg had a negotiation over a kiss being worth three of her pastries or suchlike. Juliette was smiling, "Howdy, there Teston," over her Cola. He turned on his heel and grinned in return.
"Morning, Denvers. Hows you and your pa up at the Rodeo. Haven't been up that way in around a week in a half." He smiled apologetically.
"Yeah, I noticed it's been quiet for the last while. Well, why haven't you been gracing my presense?"
"Introducing a cousin to a new job herding sheep up near BrokeBack with Vanneste's son, Selattin. I apologise I haven't been gracing your Patronage as of late, blame Jenkins."
Jenkins...Juliette remembered him, a very attractive and slim yet sturdy and strong dark haired eighteen year old. Just moved into town from Rush Valley Falls. Sel'd like him Juliette smiled smugly.

*Ho, shit. That's a long one. XD *

*right so Jenkins is Sel's new herder partner? XD *

Sel rode back to Hoodie in silence, keeping a slow pace and always an eye out for the white horse. The more he thought about it the more he thought he'd imagined it, yet it kept playing in his head that swish of the whitest white tail he'd ever seen.
Hoodie bounded over in greeting, normally his partner would take over the shift now and he would go to sleep but for now he had no partner so he settle agiainst a rock and kept watch. Letting himself only doze of for 5minutes at a time.
Sleeping like this never lasted very long and soon he was up on his feet pacing round in small circles, he drank some booze and went over to some nearby cattle, they were used to him and let him pet them. He studied some of the calfs one at a time, checking for any crucial conformation problems. Most cattle were used for producing new calfs and milking, some went of to the butchers and those with nicest possible conformation went to the rodeo where they caught cattle on horses.
Sel used to enjoy watching his father doing his thing but now Sel was always stuck up on mount Brokeback, don't get him wrong here he loved mount Brokeback but he got lonely and it just increased his... abnormality of being a bisexual cowboy.

He sighed and sat down next to Hoodie and scratched him behind the ear.

"So how's about heading to the Saloon? Have a nip of gin?" James smiled, tearing his way through a Danish Pastry and speaking with rips of puffy pastry in his mouth. Juliette looked at James and wondered where he got the thrust to drink Gin at eleven in the morning.
"Seriously, Jem?" Chance raised and eyebrow under the brim of his hat. Jem was James little pet name since he was seven. Only James and Juliette called him that.
"Sure thing. It's just what I need first thing on a Friday. Come on, ye yellow belly, Chance? Hows about you, Juliette?" James replied in a taunt.
"No, I ain't a yellow belly, just sensible, Jem."
"Oooooh, someone's becoming a llaaddyy..." James taunted again in a singsong voice to Chance. Chance looked defeated, he looked like he fanied himself a root beer. He wasn't going to help Juliette, he smiled.

Sel woke up suddenly to the cry of a calf, he hadnt realised he'd fallen asleep for so long, it was dark already.
He took out his rifle and saw a wolf sneaking up to a calf in fact it had bitten the calf already, Sel shot once and hit the wolf in the thigh, just enough to drive it away without killing it, there we go again his softy side coming out again. He rolled his eyes to himself and went over to examine the calf, the wound wasnt too deep but it was still bleeding quite badly. He took off his shirt and tightened it around the calf's leg, it called in pain but Sel with his years of experience managed to hold it down till the bleeding stopped. He smiled at his work and pet the calf then released it.

It was around eight at night and Juliette trotted alongside Chance on his horse, Justice, he named his horse after the way his views were. Justice was key to order, truth the way to a happy life...so his horses spawn was to be called 'Truth'. Juliette laughed, she had beaten Chance and Jem in a contest to see who had the strongest liver, Gin always worked better for her...probably got her dadee's liver. James was passed out on the floor of the bar and the bartender knew his dad so just kept him there til he came down in his pick up.
Chance, although slightly tipsy, offered to escort her back to the Ranch since it was getting dark.

Sel whistled to himself, as usual. He had left Soul tethered to a tree to go piss when suddenly he heard that swish again. then the white tail, he was just about to unzip his pants when the horse came into full view. The most beautiful Mustang he'd ever seen stood before him, it turned on it's hocks and reared then galloped off, "WAIT!!" Sel shouted after it... as if a horse would understand. It had been a stallion, a wild mustang stallion, snow white...

He pissed and jumped on Soul clucking him on and forgetting about the cattle and Hoodie he galloped after the stallion. It was as if he wanted to be followed, he would speed up when Sel got to close and when he fell back the stallion would slow down... or maybe it was just a game. Soon all too soon Soul started wheezing, then coughing. Sel knew he'd have to stop or Soul would get colic. But he wanted to get the stallion...
Soul faltered and fell back into a staggering walk, Sel jumped off took the saddle and bridle off and let Soul lie down. He'd pushed his hore too far once more.

The white horse had disapeared back into the woods and Sel came face to face to an unknown place/field... he'd never been here before... he'd ventured too far now. No going back.

Later that night Soul had recovered enough to stand up and be lead to the nearby river for a drink, Sel washed his face and saw a white reflection just above his in the water. He looked up slowly and there on the other side of the river, the white stallion drank from the river in such a calm and peaceful way Sel couldnt help but smile.

"Be careful getting back down that hill without tipping the horse, Mr Teston." Juliette smiled at the blonde headed Cowboy backing away from the gate of the ranch slowly.
"Don't you worry, Ms Denvers, I'll get home just fine. If I don't it was worth escorting a beautiful lady like yourself home." He smiled back, still backing the horse.
"Er, Chance, Justice is backwards."
"I know that, I just wanted to look at that pretty little face of yours a lil' longer."
Juliette's cheeks reddened a little, "Goodnight, Chance."
"G'night Jules." Juliette turned Spirit and they trotted through the gate.

During his 2days on brokeback, he had come to realize that Soul was getting old. He felt sorry for the horse, although he still moved at same speed with same grace as ten years ago... it was gettting harder and harder for Soul to climb the steep hills and walk the long days with no rest.
Sel sighed he patted Soul and looked at the stallion. His beautful white mane whisking around his neck with the wind, he was so white it almost looked like he glowed. The river was fairly low and Sel could easily waddle through it...
"Easy boy, imma gonna come over to ya and pat ya." he spoke softly to the stallion as he waded himself through the small gentle flowing river. The stallion pricked his ears and snorted, but remained on his spot.

Sleep came easy to Juliette, a nip or two of Whiskey does that to you.
Upon a eight-thirty wake up call from her brother rolling out of bed in the room next door, she decided a shower was a good idea and changing out of her clothes from last night into clean ones might have been considered sanitary.
She exited the shower, cleansed and bright eyed and if she had a tail one might say it would have been bushy. She assembled herself wearing a pair of light denim shorts like the ones she wore the previous day and a mid-sleeve white sweater. She found her pair of White kicks at the bottom of her bed and she gave her hair a quick brush before dawdling out of her room in search of her dad and the house help, Penny-Z. Penny-Z was one of the few negroes in town and she was a damned fine cook if Juliette did say so herself. She had been with the family for the last few years...since she was eighteen and that was at least six years ago. Now her husband and his best friend worked as the Ranch hands assisting her father.

Sel reached the stallion and placed his hand on its firm wise forehead, the stallion did not move but accepted the hand and started chewing.
"Good boy"
Half an hour later Sel was back on Soul with the stallion walking next to them peaceful, he had shown no signs of dominance or aggression towards Soul, neither did Soul, he though this was strange.
Soul knew the way back and soon they closed up on the cattle, Sel was horrified. There right before him lay 3cattles on the ground bleeding, but the strangest was that all wounds had been treated and bandaged. Someone was out there!

"Hello?! Who's there! Show yourself!!" Sel shouted.

Meanwhile Jenkins was crouched over a calf on the other side of the herd when he heard Sel's call, "Well well the best cow herder huh? funking best my ass." Jenkins swore to himself and quickly finished the calf then jumped onto Feather, his 17hh appaloosa, and cantered round the herd.
"Well well if it isnt Sellattin the great cow herder himself!" Jenkins exclaimed, "What the fuck dude?! Seriously have you even considered taking care of the fuking cattle?!" Jenkins was in no mood to play the nice little boy, cattle meant everything to him.

Penny-Z lay a plate of Bacon Sarnies on the table infront of Juliette, a second plate was laid on her right and a third directly across from her. Infront of the second plate was her brother, Samuel, infront of the second plate was her father. Samuel was considered 'the catch of the town', his black hair 'fluffed' up out of his face, his deep green eyes shined whenever he smiled-which was often-and he had amazingly white teeth to fill his smile. He was 'buff' and tall with the broad shoulders and what made him more attractive was that his father owned a rodeo...or so all of Juliette's friends told her...way too often.
"Fancy a ride out to Brokeback, Jules?" Samuel asked Juliette, her father was devouring Penny-Z's cooking not bothering with small talk until after he was finished.
"As in the mountain...over that way...like all the way over there...? Spirit would die before she got halfway up!"
"Sel's working for the Summer and if I recall Jenkins is there already. I think a visit would be nice."

Sel groaned, great this is my new partner?! thanks father.
"As a matter of fact yes this is the great Sellatting you are so rudely talking to but heck. Thanks for the cattle, im glad you showed interest in the cattle." Sel jumped off Soul and let him wander while he took the stallion and examined him more closely. His conformation was perfect for speed and mountains... this was a gift from heaven . Sel sighed.

"Right so what now? i mean heck you don't even have a camp up here? and you look like a pile of poop..." Jenkins said eyeing Sel,
"A pile of poop... what are you? a sissy?! " Sel laughed "its called pile of crap or shit..."

The trek to the mountain was nowhere near as troublesome than the trek up the mountain. The only reason Juliette really came along was to accompany Chance, Samuel could have gone on his own but Chance offered to go...Juliette automatically agreed to going after this. They had no idea exactly where Sel was on the mountain and were relying on the sight of cattle.

Jenkins turned round in a grump and marched off to his horse.

Sel took Soul's bridle off and softly placed it on the white stallion, it was as if he was waiting for Sel to just climb aboard...
First thing next morning i'll take Soul down back to the ranch... he is no longer fit for this work.. a silent tear rolled down Sel's cheek as he looked at Soul, it reminded him so much of his mother, he couldnt part with his horse yet...

"Oh, sweet Jeeeesus! I see them, those brown bastards are like another five mile up! What the hel-" Juliette began to rant, stroking poor Spirit's side of her face. Chance smiled at her outburst, it took longer than he thought it would but she cracked. When she had alcohol she got irritable, Chance had nothing like that so it was fun to laugh at.

Sel had left Soul near their "camp", Jenkins had insisted on building a proper camp for them to stay over night and cook food etc... Sel wasn't convinced, J sounded too much like a poof...
He walked the white stallion round a few times before mounting on him, the stallion shifted nervously eager to get going.
"Jenks!! Get some rest i'll do the rounds for tonight," he shouted to Jenkins.
"NO WAY dude!! I'm sticking with you to make sure you don't leave these poor sods alone again!" Jenkins shouted back, he rode over towards Sel and grinned, "You named him yet?" nodding towards the white stallion.
"No... but you should really get some rest."
"you kidding? Im full of beans, seriously i'm good to go, race you to the top creek? we can watch all the poor sods from there."
"fine, and stop calling them poor sods, they're cattle." Sel tapped the stallion onwards and took of at an easy gallop, so smooth Sel smiled to himself as he saw Jenkins fall further and further behind.

"Does anyone see the white horse or is it just me?" Juliette asked Chance and Sam as they got about another two miles up the mountain.
"Nawh, I see it too." Chance smiled, "And I see cousin Jenks!"
"Well, we better hurry up then before it's too late to even visit." Samuel interjected and cantered ahead.

Sel halted DreamWave, that's we he had decided to call him during the gallop, and waited for Jenks to catch up, "Well what do i get for winning?" he grinned and patted Dream.
Jenks was too stunned to speak, the stallion hadn't even broken into a sweat.
"Well nothing, i would've won against Soul but ... that stallion is amazing!!"
"I know right?!" Sel regretted his uber gay exclaimation and saw the confusion on Jenks face, "I mean i know, that's why super Sel found him, i called him DreamWave, his gallop is very smooth." he stopped himself from saying 'sooooo smooooth yum' because that would just ruin his cover and he could forget his job and all.
