Death Asks a Favor
You can see the back story and profiles here in the recruiting thread: http://www.menewsha.com/forum/commun...sks-favor.html
Standard rules apply. You guys know the routine. I encourage everyone to take the story in whatever direction you want. Conflict is always good to add. It keeps the story moving and gives characters something to work towards or against. If your character likes to cause mischief than have them do it, even if it makes the other character's lives more difficult. Creating situations for other characters to react to keeps things fresh. Make NPC's, bad guys, good guys, add towns, secret passages, whatever you want. So far the world is modern day USA and most magical beings try to blend in or stay hidden. Since all of us are dead I think it might be easier for us to find them. Link to OOC thread: http://www.menewsha.com/forum/commun...favor-ooc.html Profiles: SPOILER---------- Carley woke up slowly. She was laying on a plush velvet couch that was surprisingly comfortable. There were several other people around her who were all in various stages of wakefulness. She blinked slowly and then focused her attention on the black robed creature called Death. Once she heard Death talk and tell them that they were no longer among the living Carley exploded. "You never told me that I would have to be DEAD in order to get magic powers! What the hell do you mean go arm yourselves? I want to go back to my regular suburban life. Put me back there. Now. Undo whatever you did to me." She sat up and stomped her foot on the floor for emphasis. |
Syblle's eyes fluttered open to a lovely room but the calm that came with sleep left her and she remembered her last waking thoughts. Quickly glancing around she found the dark robed figure. Before she had time to process the past events, he spoke again. With this news Syblle was close to tears.
She turned her head away, covering her mouth with her right hand, the other was clutching the soft fabric of the plush chair she occupied. "but I'm too young to die. I...I didn't even get into the industry yet..." Mostly Syblle continued to babble to herself between sobs, barely registering the tantrum from another girl was throwing. "An armory...? Like weapons?" Syblle was just a little sick at thought of weapons and of her having to use one. "Well and you can't just forget to mention something, that's like false advertising, I'll sue you......or something....." Her quick outburst fizzled out quickly, could you sue death? Well apparently you could make deals with him. |
Jake's eyes flickered as he awoke sitting within a velvet chair. He pushed himself quickly shaking off sleep as quickly as possible. He numbly stood in silence listening to death speak to the group. He paused at the deal's catch. Jake gritted his teeth.
"I have a feeling this is going to be a long 100 years." Jake growled after listening to Syblle and Carley's outbursts. He pushed up his glasses before turning away towards the door. Jake clenched his fist kicking himself mentally for thinking that he could live through this. 'How could I have been so stupid?!' He thought to himself. Before Jake started to the door he paused and looked back at death, for there was only one thing he wanted to know. "When can..we..use our powers?" Jake said using the term 'we' lightly. "And will we be able to attend to our personal lives while here? or do we have to wait for 'vacation?'" Jake asked unhappily. His mind was wandering to how the mission would go. |
"I do hate to be the barer of bad tidings, however there is no 'undoing' death."
Death turns from the hysterical women and looks at Jack. "Your powers are available to you already. You can use them whenever you like. But your power won't work on me, so don't even bother trying." He says with a wink. "Currently your mission should be your number one priority. I do understand that this has been a rather abrupt transition, but I think that if everyone can manage to calm down and really think about the opportunity that has been given to you, you might see the upside to the situation. You now have a home base in this fabulous mansion with every amenity you could ever want. You each have a special 'gift' that no one else in the world possesses. I even have a private plane on standby ready to take you to Fernley. All I ask in return is a little help with some errands. Is that so much to ask?" "Considering the quick transition from life to death everyone here probably has some loose ends to take care of. You have all been asleep for two days and obviously no one has found your bodies since you still inhabit them. If you need to make some phone calls there is a telephone in the study just down the hall. Once the mission has been completed you may pursue further contact with the people you knew while living. If you must contact your loved ones during the mission, please make sure that it does not interfere with your ability to finish your task. I would not advise telling your friends and family what has happened to you. The living tend to be skeptics about these sort of things." |
Aaron stretched as he listened to Death explain what it would. Being dead all of a sudden was a hard concept to grasp, but Aaron figured that there would be a catch to the deal just he could not have imagined it would be immediate death.
Then he heard it, one of his favorite words. When he heard it Aaron's heart lifted and his ears perked up; did he say... an armory? That and his powers were available immediately? There was a new sparkle to Aaron's eyes, and all of a sudden this whole death thing was left behind him. Standing up from his bed Aaron decided he would just go see for himself what was in this armory by exploring until he found it. After taking a few steps Aaron realized he was jumping the gun, it would be rude to leave without at least an introduction to everyone else around since it seemed they were to be together for the next hundred years. Scanning the room he took note of everyone before stepping forward, away from the bed he awoke on, and putting his two cents in, "Well it looks like we are stuck here. Like death said, there is no bringing us back. We are stuck with our choice, might as well attempt to make the best of it." He passed his gaze between the two women who had reacted to Death's statement, in an attempt to comfort them. Aaron's face was soft and his eyes full of pity for what they must have left behind. "My name is Aaron.", he offered after a short pause, his words accompanied by a small smile. |
Yan's eyes flashed open as she heard the sound of some one near freaking out. She jumped up and landed on a soft bed. She looked down and saw the beautiful red and gold bedding she had been sleeping on. She was woken fully from her dream as she found her eyes landing on the black robed figure. At once everything hit her from the night before or two nights before it would seem.
She sat there and lessened to the others still in shock. She looked down at her hands they where still hers. She had wandered for a long time what it would be like to be dead. Not that she herself wanted to know the answer to soon. Though the locals where she and her brother had lived loved to talk about it. All had their different views on the subject but none could image it she thought as she sat there still staring at her hands. Her eyes looked to death himself as she heard him say their mission. What mission did he speak of and why would she want to go back to her old life any how. She had got away from it and why where the others so freaked out he was death after all it only made since they would die. "When do we start and what is our goal?" She said in a clam voice as she looked at the floor admiring how everything was so elegant and beautiful. They had all made their agreement with death so it was time they lived up to it. Besides they were already dead it wasn't like they could die again. Her eyes moved about the room till they met the same sad Irises that had greeted her every evening. She froze as she saw Titus there how had he got there. She scolded her self knowing the answer to that question and cursed death for taking her brother as well. Titus open his eyes a he rose slightly. He sat up and stared at the girl who was yelling. He wandered when she would be quite and accept her fate. He smiled slightly as he ran his fingers along the silk bed spread he found himself on. It felt so nice and he almost forgot where he was and how he had got there. He looked up as he saw death and his eye's widen. He was snapped out of trance as he heard a soft voice that he knew better than any song or piece of art. He turned slowly afraid to see the truth. He froze as he saw the blued haired and eyed Yan he had loved and protected since they where little. She was only two years younger than him but he loved his little sister. He stared at her in disbelief that she had gave up her life for this little "gift" death had promised. She had so much talent with her art to give up on her life for this. Though if death had planned this they where the last in their family and hand no one to miss them. He couldn't take his eyes from Yan as he just stared at her unable to say anything still in shock she had chosen to accepts deaths offer. |
“Typical men, lets go get some weapons and superpowers and beat up stuff…” Syblle sniffed and mumbled to herself. While her eyes were still shiny with tears, she was mostly calm. “A PHONE! I’ll just call my family and tell them……what that I’m dead. I’ll probably give my father a heart attack. Hello daddy, guess what I’m dead, but its fine, death has hooked me up.” Her internal monologue was only evident in her odd facial expressions.
“Oh,” Syblle said as she realized that the guy had been talking to her, “I’m Syblle.” She felt a little rude, but saying it was nice to meet him didn’t really fit in this situation. “Ahhhh I hope we can be friends.” She offered instead, warranting him a small smile. She whipped her eyes and face clean of tears with her arm. |
Kyle isn't as upset about his death as the other. Death was comforting for him. He had no one who cared for back home. His mother was dead and his father left after his birth. He was a good kid but no one was friends with him. Thus, he didn't wake up screaming but smiling. This was his rebirth not his death. He woke up just as soon as Aaron introduced himself. the others had actually awoken him with the yelling but like any teen ignored them at first. He woke up from the desk he had his head on and said "I'm Kyle." he was siting across the room but didn't bother getting up.
|
Aaron's smile grew slightly as one of the women introduced herself, he had been watching her facial expression show and figured that Syblle was most likely contemplating the situation that everyone suddenly found themselves in.
He placed a hand on Syblle's arm, "Of course we can be friends.", he reassured her, "It is good to meet you, I just wish the circumstances were better." Aaron might have said more but another voice called out from a desk a little ways across the room. Aaron withdrew his hand from Syblle's arm to greet Kyle with a wave of his hand, "It is good to meet you as well, Kyle." "Now I am not sure if we get hungry anymore, but I do not think I am going to break my habit of eating as much as possible when the opportunity presents itself. I say we go to the kitchen and get some food, not much else to do at the moment.", Aaron attempted to throw some humor in there. Despite jumping to go at the thought of a kitchen, full of anything he could ever want to eat, Aaron stayed put. There was still at least one more introduction to be had before he would explore what waited for them in the kitchen. |
Carley's stomach let out a loud growl and she covered it with her hand. "I think I'm hungry." She mumbled before pointing her finger towards Death. She uttered an impressive and vulgar stream of obscenities in his direction before taking a deep breath and looking at the room around her. "I feel a little better now... sorry about that. How well stocked is that kitchen? You think there might be apple pie or something good in there?" She bit her lower lip thinking about it.
"Looks like we are going to be spending some time together, missions and all. My name is Carley and I would be much happier to meet all of you if we were still alive. But as long as we can still eat sweets while dead, things can't be too bad. I wonder if that stuff will make us fat since we aren't alive?" Carley looked at all the new faces around the room, but settled on one girl with long purple hair who had not woken up yet. "What's wrong with her? Is she like dead dead. Not waking up kind of dead? Did you put us in here with a dead corpse?!" Her voice became shrill and squeaky at the end as she processed the information. |
Jake crossed his arms and stared at Aaron, who seemed to want to be the peace keeper of the group. He frowned at Aaron leading the group to the kitchen already. Jake started towards the door. "I'll catch up later." He responded as he got to the door. "I'm Jake by the way." He said and opened the door that lead into the main entrance room on the ground floor. He closed the door behind him not expecting a response.
'Out of the frying pan and into the fire.' Jake mused himself as he looked around the room. Jake assumed with the others going to eat soon and make acquaintances he would have time until the mission to set everything up. Jake started walking and then kicked himself mentally for not asking death if they would be alive again after the 100 years. Jake headed across the hall towards the to giant armored suits that seemed to be standing guard by the door. Jake paused before reaching them and looked up at their silver polished glory. He almost expected them to move. Jake entered through the door, and found that he was correct in thinking that this door lead to the armory. |
Kyle began to look at his fellow "undead." Four beautiful girls, one still asleep, and another three guys, obviously more athletic then himself, some, like Aaron, a little more amiable than the others. He wasn't hungry so instead of heading to the kitchen he went upstairs to grab the best room first. He went from room to room analyzing all of them. He finally settled in a room with a large window. It seemed to be the middle of the night because Kyle could see the moon, the only thing that comforted him through the nights of his horrid youth. He remembered one particular night in which he had just been ripped to shreds by the class bully, literally, the kid pulled a knife on him, and he had the scars to prove it. He looked at the moon that night pleading to just die. It had been a long time ago and since then only one person had shown him any compassion, Alice, his blind next door neighbor. She was around his age and they had even dated for a little while before she died. That was a few years ago.
The moon was thus what he could accredit with his current situation. "Thank you moon, you've given me my wish,a few years late though and I didn't expect to be 'un'dead" |
Yan just sat there as the others went about and did as they pleased. She slowly rose and walked to the strange door that she had seen the strange guy use. Maybe his name was James though she wasn't sure she had never been good with names. She didn't care at this point to get to know any of the others that she was apparently damned to be with for at lest 100 hundred years or maybe more she feared. She figured since they had 100 years to be together she could get to know them later.
Yan some how after what felt like hours found her way out side in a secret garden. She smiled loving how beautiful the roses and trees where. There was no way out of the hedges of bushes and trees it was a green cell but she liked it. Nothing could get out or in but the flowers and other plants where to beautiful to no enjoy even if you went able to leave them. She walked to one of the hidden stone benches hidden by a small wall of bushes. She took the small pen that her father had giving her when she was little. Her father had told her that it was a special pen that was suppose to have magical powers and never run out of ink. She rarely used it after her father died afraid that the ink would run it. She slowly open it and put the lid on the back of it as she closed her eyes and let out a breath. "Here goes nothing lets see if Death kept that promise." She said. She slowly began to draw lines the curves then filled them in. To her surprise she found that drawing on the stone wasn't hard and it was fun. Her eye's widen as the pot she was drawing materialized before her. She gently touched the air where the pot was unfinished and jumped back into the pushes as her pen mark stood in the air waiting for her to finish it. She calmed down as she stared at it in wonder. She giggled as she began drawing in the air as she finished her pot and flower. She stepped back and looked at her work as it came to life. She looked down at the pen and smiled as she looked at it. Maybe it was magical after all though she had asked for the gift of life. Titus just sat there as he watched his sister leave. He wanted to follow her but maybe she needed some time alone. He looked over to the sleeping girl and wandered when she would wake. Personally Pancakes sounded good to him and if he was dead it really didn't matter how many he ate. Though he did wander if dead people did eat. He couldn't wait to see Death's Kitchen though he wandered if it was just full of deadly things but they where all dead even if it was. He rose to his feet slowly and looked to Death then to the others. He gave a faint smile as he looked at Carley then to Aaron and then to the sleeping girl. |
Kyle realized he had been staring at the moon for a while and when he looked down and saw a girl sitting, and..... was she drawing? More than that what she drew appeared in front of her. Then Kyle remembered the deal. You worked for Death you got powers. He remembered the the exact words he said to Death "I want to control the shadows I've hidden in my entire life." He looked at the flower the girl had created and decided see how much he could do with his powers. He decided to go down to the girl too, "Let's kill two birds with one stone"
He then thought I hid in them in life, so can I hide in them in death. He thought about it and it began to happen. He Began to sink into his shadow. "cool." He then opened the window and jumped out. When he hit the ground he fell through like it was water. He willed himself to go up and he did so. He then looked toward the girl and said,"Hello. Would you like some company on this fine evening?" |
Yan turned and scooted back further onto the bench as she saw something out of the corner of her eye appear before her. She stared at the guy as she pointed then sat their speechless for a moment. "You...just came out of the ground? Shadow? So death did give us powers." She said as she sat there trying to figure out mainly how he had got their so quickly. She closed her favorite pen and looked back at her creation as she stood and leaned down kissing the plant before she turned. She walked to where they guy who she thought was named Kyle if she remembered correctly. "Why not we are all dead here after all. It isn't like we have anything to fear we work for death after all." She said as she smiled and took his arm.
|
“Ditto” Syblle said, wishing the circumstances could have been different, but hey!, no crying over spilt milk right? “I could use some chocolate….or maybe ice-cream, actually both. I suppose I’m dead and therefore can’t get fat… Oh” she said in reply to Carley, “I adore pie! And it's nice to meet you.” Carley’s second outburst had Syblle frozen in place; she totally did not want to see a dead person.
|
Kyle smiled."Yeah i'm a uhhh..... shadow bender..... for lack of a better term. You.... create things? I'm just guessing. And your right, being dead kinda kills the whole self preservation thing. For example, I got down here by jumping out a second story bedroom window." He bent down and examined the flower, it was like something he'd never seen before but was familiar with. "This is really cool by the way. Never seen anything like it. As for being dead, I'm glad I'm dead, and I know that people aren't going to feel the same way and you guys might want to call parents and loved ones and try to make up some stupid excuse for why you've gone missing. I won't my mom's dead, and my dad could care less about my welfare. I DOn't have any family or friends. I lived in the shadows, always lurking in the shadows, never in the spotlight. Your artwork probably got you loads of spotlight where you came from." Only after Kyle said this did he realized how creepy it sounded, Oh I'm sooooo glad I'm dead. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. He was never good around girls. He always said something stupid, even if it was true. No one was going to lose sleep over his disappearence, except maybe some of his teachers, although only becuase most of them had kids his age. So basically they wouldn't cry over him, but over the thought it could happen to their kids. This is why Kyle was so quick to take the deal. In the worst case scenerio he'd die and no one would care. The benfifts outweighed the risks for him. "Sorry about the gloomy talk, I hope It hasn't mad you super creeped out of me. We do have to spend a hundred years together after all." He tried to manage a small smile but it wouldn't come. As he talked he realized he was walking, leading the girl around. The girl. He didn't even know her name. "I'm Kyle by the way"
|
Yan stared at him then laughed at his rambling as she lessened to him. "I have no family other than my brother and apparently he is here so there is no one to call. As for my art many will be happy I'm dead it will make my art worth more. I spent my time locked in my room or in the woods I didn't get out much. You shouldn't be so gloomy and your right we are suck together for at lest 100 hundred years enough time to turn that mood of yours around. I'm Yan by the way and I think I have the power of creation. I lived for my art spending my life painting away in my room. I wanted to bring what I drew painted and saw to life. You don't have to be nervous around me I don't bite...I might draw you a zipper though for that mouth." She said in a teasing tone as she smiled and laughed.
|
She laughed, wow. That never happened to Kyle. A girl never thought he aws funny. they alwasy just ignore him. Even when he purposely put himself in contact with girls, such as joining the clubs at his school or what not, they just blew him off like he was part of the blackboard. A few times a girl would walk up and ask hi for a pencil or something. Nthing more though. He was surprised that Yan was more open to him becuase of this. He was normally the last guy for anyone to talk to. No girl ever showed intrest in him, now a girl, and a very beautiful on at that, was talking to him like a person, not a pencil bank. It didn't necessarily mean she was interested but it was a start. "So how areyou doin on this Fine evening, Miss Lan."
He probably shouldn't've use dthe formality but he hoped she could hear the sarcasm in his voice when he said it. He wasn't trying to be rude, he was trying to be funny. He said it in a way that made him sound like some knight. |
"Yeah food sounds great right now.", Aaron admitted aloud before joining the others in their trek towards the kitchen.
After entering into the hall that was to take them to the kitchen Aaron saw two statues clad in armor 'guarding' a door. He was at a impasse. Is this the armory?, Aaron thought to himself while further observing both the door and its guardians. Looking from the door, to the group, and back to the door helped him make up his mind, "I'll go to the kitchen in a minute." With that Aaron approached the guarded door in a speed that was just under a run. After taking a minute to admire the armor he entered the door and found out that he was correct. The armory had been filled with all kinds of arms and armors from different time periods. Completely overlooking the fact that there was another person in the room with him Aaron began to closely examine a section that contained many different types of swords. It was easy to decide which sword he wanted the most, but why could he not carry all at once! Death had quite a collection, Aaron had never seen so many different types of swords in one location. Aaron almost cried from the beauty of it all, this is what he lived and breathed for. Weapons and armor of old, he even decided not to go to college in order to pursue a career in sword fighting. Never could he have even imagined seeing a collection of this scale. Down from the wall he took the modern day bastard sword. It is called 'modern' because it was. The new version of these swords actually is meant to be used two handed and features a longer blade and longer hilt. Inspecting it further revealed that the blade appeared to be freshly sharpened and no nicks or scrapes were visible on it. The only complaint he could give about the sword was that he wished that it had a little more personality to it and that the hilt was slightly shorter. Just then the hilt actually shrunk before his very eyes. Amazing!, Aaron thought to himself with wide eyes. It quickly conformed to his will, the hilt turned from a plain wood color to a sleek black and the polished steel of the blade became engraved with weird cursive like letters. While he had no clue what those letters said they looked awesome. A black scabbard appeared before him for the weapon, and Aaron took to customizing that as well. 'Glory in life, and in death' was soon ingrained in silver letters on the sheath and after a moment of admiring both items he placed the weapon in the sheath and secured it to his back. At the end of his surprisingly quick weapon hunt Aaron stood with the bastard sword on his back, two long curved daggers in scabbards on his left side, and a dark wood colored composite short bow made complete with a quiver he approximated was full of about twenty arrows. He did not feel right wearing this normal clothing while carrying all of these bad ass weapons but he figured there was probably another place where he could change into something else. Aaron considered armor for a minute but in the end decided it would just slow him down. There Aaron stood with a stupid grin on his face that stretched as big as it possibly could. He felt like a kid that sneaked into a candy store after hours and got to eat all the sweets they could get their little hands on. ((oh by the way guys and gals look in the OOC chat for an update on where the story is going and such)) |
Groggily Sky opened her eyes, her vision blurry at first then becoming clearer. She found herself lying on a plush red and gold couch. Sitting up slowly she rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand and then absently tucked some of her hair behind an ear to get it out of her face. Looking around she saw a few people and then abruptly saw Death. Suddenly her memory came rushing back and she remembered everything that had happened. "Dead am I? Well that tidies things up somewhat doesn't it," she said softly to herself.
Stretching, she stood up and looked around at her surroundings. There were many plush couches and chairs all around the room. On one there was a sleeping girl. She somehow knew about the mission Death had gave all the people here without having to have heard it from him. Perhaps it was something that was made known instantly if you hadn't gotten here with the first group but she wasn't sure. Not seeing many people in the room she walked silently to the door at the front of the room. Might as well look around and acquaint myself with where I will be living Walking out of the room she found herself in a hallway. At the end was another door where she could smell food. Her stomach gurgled a little at the scent of food. As she started down towards the door she passed by two statues in front of another door. Pausing she decided to find out what was in this room first. Pushing the door open she found herself in an armory. She looked around with some excitement. At least I will be able to keep in practice with a sword here It wasn't until she had turned to look at the other side of the room when she saw the man standing in the middle of the room with a huge grin on his face. He seemed to have already outfitted himself with weapons. She froze, unsure what to do. Her eyes looked him over, finally settling on his face. Wow is he good looking... She attempted to say something but found herself tongue-tied and frozen to the spot she stood in. Out of the corner of her eye she saw yet another man in the room but wasn't any less tongue-tied for it. |
Yan just stared at him and shook her head as she laughed. "Please My name is Yan not Lan you should like my brother. Come on we better get back inside. Death has our first mission already ready for us. Lets get this one down we still have 100 years to go of missions. Come on my Knight in shadow armor lets get going before we get in trouble. Besides we have to find the others and get going." She said as she turned and gave him a playful wink as she took his hand and pulled it gently as she stepped back towards the house wanting him to come with her.
|
(Sorry, typo)
Kyle apologized for the mispronounciation of her name. "yeah I guess we better head back in. Don't want to miss the fun parts," kyle said, quietly chuckling at her 'knight in shadow armor' pun. He sure hoped her brother liked him. If Not it would be a VERY long hundred years. |
Yan just laughed as she heard him. "Don't make bring the boogie man to life to keep you in line. Besides who wants to get on death's bad side. We have some time to spend with him. I want to see what our powers can do personally. I am very curious to how we can help death and why chose all of us to do these missions. Don't you want to know why death would give us a deal like these we have." She said as she looked up into Kyle's eyes giving him a warm smile. This was different she had never been good around others near her own age. With him she could be open and random as she normally was. For once she didn't need her pictures to lessen to her and be her companions. She hoped her brother would be ok with her choice though he couldn't say much apparently he had chosen to die than to live. As for Kyle she knew her brother would have thoughts and be over protective but that was to be expected.
|
Kyle Was happy to hear her laughing, even if it was at him. "Yeah, We better get goin' milady." he let her lead him inside and said, "Before we go into the kitchen I suggest we arm ourselves like Death told us. The armory is just down the hall, I think." He looked at her for confirmation. Really he was always was fascinated by medieval weapons and wondered what Death had here.
