As the hand was placed on her head, the little girl felt warmer, as if someone had just given her a big hug. "N-nothing..." she said in response to the question. After using her sleeves to wipe away the tears she slowly peered up at the blonde-haired man. This was not the doctor who usually came to visit her, in fact, she didn't remember ever seeing this doctor around before. "Who are you mister?" she asked as curiosity got the better of her. |
"If you're so connected, how can you afford to be doing all this Death stuff?" 'More importantly,' And he wouldn't say this out loud, 'How can you possibly afford to be here doing all your Death stuff this late at night?' The idea of having this guy in his house still didn't sit too well with Brodie.
"What kind of job does Death have, anyway?" He said as he leaned back onto his bed again, "If Mr. Cozu works in a hospital, do you work in, like, a funeral home?" |
He let out a soft snort of laughter. "My job pays extremely well. I usually don't work more than three or four days a week anyways," he said with a shrug, glancing out the window. "I'm a personal trainer. Andrew's always been attracted to the health profession, that's what he does. Me? I like to have something completely different to look forward to."
He turned his gaze back to Brodie. "I don't have to work. I don't have to do anything. I could live completely free if I wanted to. Death is very persuading." |
'So,' he thought bemusedly, 'The Grim Reaper is a personal trainer?' He got over that fact fairly quickly as he listened to what else the man had to say. His face took on a more serious look, "Why?" he asked, "Doesn't that mean that all you really need to do is take people's souls and nothing more? If you could just float around the place, why would you choose to be connected to this world?"
"Because floating around without interaction is the most boring, lonely thing in the world. And I didn't mean that anyways. I meant that all you have to do is scare some rich person into thinking they're going to die, and make them pay you off to stay alive. You can live really well that way."
Brodie shifted his weight around, trying to get into a less constrained position. It wasn't easy when he knew he could easily fall asleep if he were too comfortable. "Sounds like that could just as easily be accomplished with a gun, a dark alley, and a good alibi," he said in response to the man's answer, "And I doubt human interaction is all it's cracked up to be."
"It's better than silence. Even if it means dealing with ungrateful brats like you. Besides, Andrew's not human, so it doesn't really matter, now does it? You'd be surprised; Life and Death get along pretty well."
Smiling as the cool droplets of rain hit her skin, she continued to walk on, doing small twirls as she walked along, feeling for the lack of shadow like a blindwoman. Tessan ran a hand through her green hair, parting it so the rain would soak it easier.

He accelerated when the light finally turned green, heading for another road. Suddenly, a large bolt of lightning shot down form the sky, striking the pavement several yards ahead of him. As soon as he'd sen the light, his eyes had widened. His bike went out of control, slamming sideways into the pavement and spinning, sending him skidding away from it, his helmet sliding off his head and rolling across the ground.
He let out a cry and scrambled up, grabbing his helmet and throwing it to the side of the road and grabbing his scratched up motorcycle, uprighting it and running it to the sidewalk. He dropped it, no longer caring if it fell, and made his way under an overhang of a large building, sitting with his back against it and his legs pulled up to his chest, hiding his face in his knees. The left side of his body was scuffed up, bleeding in several places and his clothes were ripped slightly from the friction caused by passing over the pavement. He did his best not to panic, but his best wasn't good enough. He was terrified of lightning. |
Brodie made a face at the words, 'ungrateful brat,' though it wasn't as if he weren't expecting to hear something like that. "Human interaction, other-worldly-being interaction, it's still the same thing-" 'Just, this seems to involve less sleep.' "Silence, at least, doesn't wake me up." Technically, that wasn't true, he'd been waking up at odd times lately, seemingly by nothing at all. Silence also had a tendency of keeping him awake as well.
"Dragons and cats get along well, then?" |
"Dragons and demons," he corrected. "Though dragons and cats get along just fine."
"I've got a demon in my house then?" It was bad enough when he was just a cat. The word, demon, just added a bit more weirdness to it all.
"What, would you prefer I just call myself Death?" he asked with a sneer.
"Actually, I'd prefer you weren't here at all," he said under his breath. "Ah, not really, no. What do you call yourself anyway? Demon-Death-Cat has a name doesn't he?"
((At least, I don't think Shozii's told Brodie his name yet.)) |
"You have my phone number, why not look for yourself?" he asked, crossing his arms stubbornly.
((Oh noes, I don't think I did anything with that card. One of many things I forgot to mention.))
Brodie was about to ask him what he was talking about, before he thought for a second that something about phone numbers seemed a bit familiar. 'Oh, wait,' of course, the card that Dr. Cozu had given him earlier that day-though, it seemed like a lot longer than the few hours it had been. Brodie pushed himself off the bed and to the light switch. In his now lit room, he spotted the little white card on his bedside table. With a quick glance at the man on his desk, Brodie picked up the card, "Shozii? Shozii, what is that? Arabian?" It didn't sound like any name he'd heard before, 'kind of like Cozu.' |
"Not exactly," he replied, laying back down on the desk. "But believe what you want, it'll at least make you a little entertaining."
'Just how is something not exactly Arabian?' Oh well, he'd at least had a few of his questions answered. Replacing the card, Brodie went back to off the light before getting back into his bed. "Glad you're finding all this entertaining," he said as he rolled over, "All this Death is just a pain in the ass for me."
He smiled, chuckling silently as he forced himself not to make a joke at Brodie's remark. "If you were to die now, you'd never see your brother again. It would be in your best interest to put up with me and humor me," he said, sitting up on the desk and shifting back into the bright yellow-eyed cat.
With a quick jump, he was standing on the bed next to Brodie, burrowing his way underneath the blankets. He'd be damned if he was going to sleep on the floor. |
As she saw lightning light up the sky, Tessan broke out into a run, eager to find the boy. Don't get her wrong, she isn't afraid of thunder and lightning, as long as she is somewhere out of the rain. She sped passed some lights and after some more running she saw the scorched ground and some scraping on the road. As another flash lit up the sky, she saw the silhouette of the motorcycle, and immediately thought the worst. "No! Don't tell me I'll need to move him along! It's too soon, he doesn't look that much older than me when I died!" she cried, running over to the bike, looking for him. Seeing him huddling under the overhang from a building made the hair on the back of her neck that was standing up go back down. As she approached, Tessan began to speak. "Are you aware that you nearly gave me a heart attack?! I thought you were dead!" She was working herself into a self righteous indignation as she stood in front of him, but stopped mid thought. "Hey, are you alright?" she asked, seeing him so huddled up.
He whimpered, burying his face deeper into his knees. He wanted to respond to her, but he couldn't bring himself to look up, scared of seeing another lightning strike. It should've been obvious to anyone who might witness this that he was absolutely terrified.
Sighing, she smiled softly and plopped down next to him. "Hey," Tessan said, nudging his side with her elbow. "I'm not standing up anymore, so will you look at me?" she asked, pulling her own knees up, and resting her head on them, looking over at him.
He lifted his head just enough to look up at her over the tops of his knees. "I hate lightning..." he said weakly, closing his eyes tightly as lightning flashed in the distance.
Tessan shook her head, smiling again, and began to stroke his hair, starting from the top of his head. "When I was little, and I would get scared and start crying, I'd run to my mother, and she'd hold me on her lap and cuddle me, stroking my hair. When I got too big to do that, she would have me rest my head on her lap, and she would still stroke my head until I calmed down or fell asleep..."
"I just crawl in bed with my brother. Pathetic, huh?" he asked with a weak smile. Immediately that smile was ripped away as thunder roared loudly. He quickly buried his face back into his knees.
