Potential World of Darkness Based RP

Greetings!

I've been working on converting the Storyteller System (also called the "Old" World of Darkness, which was printed by White Wolf Publishing until 2003/2004.) series of table top role play game books into a format that is more friendly to forum based, free form RP; most of that involves eliminating the need for dice, and minimizing the amount of actual mechanics used during role play.

There still is a bit of a character sheet to it, however it is dramatically smaller than the table top character sheet, and is mainly to cut down on Munchkins and allow the Game Operations Director (myself) a better grasp on what to throw at the characters during the course of a campaign (and if it last that long, a chronicle or two).

A lot of the documentation is primarily to allow people who haven't had experience with the setting the chance to join in, explaining a lot of things that veterans to the original system or the live action version (Mind's Eye Theatre) are already familiar with. I'm trying to make it as streamlined as possible by summarizing and linking to wikia pages that have more in depth descriptions, without alienating newer players, but there is a bit to read if you've never touched the World of Darkness.

Currently, I have the base rules written out, and converted the most popular of the Storyteller System into this format - Vampire: the Masquerade. I'm doing just a little bit of tweaking before posting it, as well as gauging interest in it with this post.

I'd like to run a few RPs with this system here on Mene. There seem to be a great community here on Mene, plus people can use their avatars to create visual reference as to what their characters look like. If the interest is there, great, if not, I'm sure I can find a different place to try it at.

If you're interested, please vote in the poll and also express your interest in an actual post so I can start getting an idea of who all would like to join in. If you're not interested, please vote as well, for statistical purposes. ^.^

Thanks!

Edit: Adding in a list of the games that were considered part of the Storyteller System, since it occurred to me that people may have played them and never known the overall name for the books.

Vampire: the Masquerade
Kindred of the East
Werewolf: the Apocalypse
Mage: the Ascension
Wraith: the Oblivion
Humans: the Underdogs (Hunter: the Reckoning + all the prior human books from each system, i.e. Medium, Thralls, Demon Hunter, etc)
Demon: the Fallen

I am including one of the series from the new Storytelling System, because I like how they handled it in the New World of Darkness vs. the Old, and since dice rules are being virtually eliminated, the systems shouldn't clash. If they end up doing so somehow, I'll just convert the Storyteller System version. >.>

@xSerenityxNinax
Right now, there's not a whole lot that needs to be done that can be handed out, however that will change once the RP rules & setting information thread gets posted. ^.^

Yes! I LOVE the (old school) World of Darkness! I have many characters...

+ a fledgeling Lasombra on 'an extended coffee break' from the Sabbat (they have more to worry about than him)
+ A klepto thrillseeker Ravnos who is based in San Francisco and has connections with the Kuei-jin (Kindred of the East)
+ A Verbena Mage who at one point flung through time, could be played Victorian-esque or Modern
+ An obsessive compulsive Malkavian with an abused child mindset

Yes -steeples fingers- if this does go anywhere, let me know please.

@Crow
OMG, why can't you live closer...your characters would fit in smashingly with the ones myself, my fiance, and my best friend make. XD

Glad you're interested. I'll be translating more than Vampire over time, I just need a break from conversions so my brain doesn't explode. I think I may do Demon: the Fallen next because I loved how well done it was - I made someone question their religion over a campaign, like their actual religion, not their character's.

Also going to get in the Risen with the Wraith conversion, btw... ;-)

I would be interested in playing, if you'll have me.
I'd probably go for a Toreador concept, but I'd want to know a little more about where the game would start to decide more...

@numerica
I'm still working on the actual city itself - I'm trying to develop a little slice of the area for each of the WoD "races", though I haven't picked an actual city just yet...still debating on whether to set it in America or somewhere in Europe. Since there's literally no game material that takes place past 2003, I'm trying to decide exactly how the changes in our world since then are mirrored in WoD, and who was controlling what. Once I get that figured out, I think I'll have an easier time pin pointing a city to use...or I may just come up with a fictional city that overlays one of the real ones.

Ooh, this sounds like it could be interesting =O I have never played World of Darkness, but I have played a lot of D&D and some Exalted as well - and I am always up for trying new things. Sooo if you wouldn't object to someone new to the system joining in when you get started up, i would love to join you!

Actually, Exalted's systems were based on the WoD systems - and Exalted was a great game, I just didn't know enough people with interest in it to ever get a chance to play more than once.

The ruleset conversion that I'm doing will include basic setting information, an overview of things like the "races", their "power sets", etc that will have links to longer descriptions on the White Wolf Wikia. If you don't mind doing a bit of reading to become familiar with at least the basics, it's all good.

I think if you like Exalted, you'll like at least one of the series from World of Darkness, though in my opinion Demon: the Fallen and the Kindred of the East are the closest to Exalted. I'll more than likely do a conversion of Demon next, since it became my favourite of the Storyteller System after it was released. >.>

Ooh, okay, cool. I will look up the wiki and poke around there maybe later tonight while I watch the World Series XD

I've recently gotten hooked on watching Sanctuary on Sci-Fi, and that's sort of instilled in me a bit of a craving for vampire and werewolf RP, lol.

Darkfae 10-29-2009 09:23 PM

@Asahi
I hear Sanctuary is good, but I haven't watched it yet. Maybe now that I have a decent connection speed rather than 786kpbs DLS, I can start watching things online.

When you go to the WW Wikia, be sure to look under their Old World of Darkness portal, as their newer line of games (the Storytelling System...as opposed to the Storyteller System) uses the WoD name too. >.<

I can see how that would be tough. I play in a LARP where they decided that in a darker world, like the world of darkness is supposed to be, the United States would have glassed the middle east either as a reaction to 9-11 or as a preemptive strike. That's a weird game for world background anyway, but it's fun.

Darkfae 10-30-2009 12:48 AM

@Numerica
Yeah, in a darker world, we would have turned the majority of the Middle East into a glass parking lot, but the morals of our society in RL keeps us from doing so - I still think the whole atomic bomb incident, and the religious question of who exactly is going to get nailed with the responsibility of that in the afterlife, etc have really tempered at least the US's want to use nuclear weapons. As much as we have a ton of them, we do generally have the attitude of "let's not have these things floating around, and let's try to avoid using them unless we're given no other choice" when confronted with other nuclear technology.

I intend to keep the events from 2003 - present generally the same. It's more so assigning which group (Vampires, Mages, Demons, Changelings, Werewolves, etc) or sub-group (the Technocracy, the Sabbat, the Autumn People, the Black Spiral Dancers, etc) is responsible for what events.

...like I have no idea which group/sub-group was behind Obama getting into office, or if I should leave it as wild-card as it is in RL and have it be something that no group did, a usurping done by mortals who had no idea the extent of what they did...

Stuff like that. ^.^
