I was thinking something more sinister, though that idea isn't bad at all! Okay, bear with me, because this is just going to be a jumble of words.

In my head, there is a temple and a very big basin. The basin reflects the moon and this is where the sacrifice is taken. Some way or another, they are entranced and use a ceremonial dagger to off themselves while the Followers are chanting. The blood that pools into the basin is sucked down, the Followers become empowered by it so that they are able to use forbidden blood arts. This is what helps them keep hold over the world.

Okay, I'm thinking now that it all started as a ritual of some sort (maybe harvest) where a child was chosen to be the 'Child' for that lunar eclipse. They didn't die, they just held the role, but then one of them had their hair turn silver. This continued on until the Followers were lead by a corrupted individual that used this to their advantage, and turned the people's mind into mass panic when one time there was a lot of natural disasters. The child was killed and the disasters ceased. The corrupted individual then made it to where the Child was sacrificed to 'appease the Moon God(dess)' who wanted his/her Child back. In actuality, the disasters began because of the individual who had amassed enough followers and powers to be able to do that. The sacrifice is now to keep the individual alive and continue their diabolical reign!
