Who would like to volunteer some time to answer all of my ridiculous questions and hopefully rid me of some of my RP ignorance?

Risque:-----I would be more than happy to assist you! I've been known to be a very good RP partner, and a pretty good mentor. And no question is too ridiculous, trust me.

Sorry to butt in on your thread, Risque, but I am very curious too. I've skimmed over some and have been very tempted, but never made the plunge.

I don't know if you guys want to take me under your wing either? Also, if you want someone as new at it to RP with, Risque, I would be flattered. Then we don't have to worry too much at feeling newbish and uninformed. :)

I wouldn't mind at all either. Helping someone in writing is most enjoyable to me.

Awesome! Where should we begin? I don't know if we should make a new thread, or what not. Hopefully Risque doesn't mind me taking some of her attention. ;)

I'm sure she wouldn't---she seems quite nice.
If you like you could PM me. I'm usually free and tend to prefer PMs.

@ Izumi: Feel free to use the thread for all your learning purposes. And if you are interested in doing some RPs with me, I would be honored. I think I would feel less embarrassed with you than with a seasoned pro.

I am pretty busy with real life matters at the moment, so I won't be able to really sit down and write anything until tomorrow evening at the soonest.

@ Tachigami: I'll just shoot you a PM whenever I have some more free time, in case you think that I have forgotten about your offer.

@ Temple: Thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind. :)

Sure, Risque! Did you have any RPs in mind in specific? I've been churning through a couple, more bizarre ones.

Lately a bishie/yaoi kinda one, but I know that really isn't everyone's cup of tea. For me, playing a gay male who is really torn about his feelings would be a lot of fun. Perhaps I'm strange?

I've been looking for something less about feelings, and maybe exploring or solving mysteries. Reading the other posts around, I think I need to focus more on building the environment..
Modern probably fits my needs the most at the moment. (I'm boring like that!)

That sounds interesting too. Like a modern day Scooby Doo?

There's a few other ideas I have as well, but for some reason a dark side of me has been enjoying Yaoi. :O

It might be best to form a list, in your head or write it down, noting what you want to correct or ask about, depending on the importance you feel it to be. Reviewing your past writing can help with that.

I think I just need to jump in and try it, rather than try to prepare myself. I'm assuming there isn't a whole lot of preparation involved, other than agreeing on the setting and a little bit of character bio?

Well, that does depend on the person. You might find someone with a plot already in mind and they'd want to stick with something specific, or you might find someone who knows they want something specific, but outside genera and pacing, they're a blank slate for both of you to fill in later on. And some do like bios, written down and exchanged or put up in the beginning of the thread, while others want to gradually learn about the other person's character as they go along. Some discussion is usually involved, if not long, winding conversation, depending on who you're working with.

@ Izumi: Personally, I would love to just make stuff up as we go! It seems more fun that way.
And modern day Scooby Doo is a good way to put it. I'm thinking maybe some sort of murder mystery?

@ Tachigami: It's nice to know that your RP partners are willing to stick around. I don't want to get started and then have to leave half way through an RP.
Right now I am trying to get started on school, and they're making me work full time at work, so starting RPs is just a little bit out of what I can currently handle. T_T

On a semi-related note, when there is romance in an RP, it doesn't necessarily have to be between two RPers, right? I am not really interested in romance anyways, but I would like to know, since Izumi did mention something about yaoi.

--Risque-- Certainly. I do like to find dedicated people. But of course, real life does tend to get in one's way, does't it? Especially when you have a lot to go about dealing with. You do have your priorities in order, though, knowing not to start something you might not be able to stick around for at the moment. Seems more people need to do the same thing.

Oh no, it doesn't have to be between the two writers, of course not! That just seems the norm in most RPs that contain or are circulated around romance. Either side can bring in a second character for whatever intentions or thoughts they have if needed. That's a point I do like to make when speaking with a prospective RP partner.

I just figured it would be a little strange if I was doing a one on one RP and I get carried away with developing a romance for my character while my RP partner would just have to sit and watch, or something.

I want to be 100% focused on my RP when I do start, and that can be difficult with so many real life priorities. I am a bad time manager in general.
Shame that people end up disappearing halfway through an RP.. ._.

Ah, yes. That's why it's a good idea to discuss that particular focus with the person, even if it's an off the cuff type of RP. I do know that some people... just aren't great at romance, or at least writing it out, so they'd prefer to be outside that issue and allow the other person to go on with it as they'd like.

I feel it's not specifically possible to always be a hundred percent into an RP, as life is always moving forward and doesn't really seem to care for your fun time every now and again. But it's always best to wait until you're at least free enough to be able to handle one.
So sad, when people tend to vanish halfway through or even before it begins. I've had an RP stop before anything even happened, with one post specifically from me and nothing else. So it's always a good idea to do a little research into the person's RP history and see how many they've left out to dry.

Did you want to go ahead and try to set up an RP and give it a spin, Risque? I know you said you wanted to do some sort of mystery type RP. Did you have anything more in mind? Such as the setting, your character or characters you want to RP, and any particulars?

I'm willing to take a crack at it. It's nice knowing that we're both in the same boat, so we can both feel that virgin awkwardness together. :P (That and I won't feel bad if I'm not up to par with the other person...everything takes practice!)

Just popping in to give you guys an update: I turned in my two weeks notice at my job a while ago, and I'm currently looking for another job, and I just got a new kitty who has the kitty flu, so things are still hectic! But I've submitted enough applications for now, so I can just wait, I think. :D

Izumi: Hope you don't mind the ping, but I figured that pinging will help me get more committed.. again, that virgin awkwardness at play~
Personally I am not too fond of school settings, but they look easy to work with. Maybe the idea of two students solving the murder of a friend would be cool?
For a first RP I want a character that isn't too far removed from me IRL.. *nod*

@ Tachigami: I guess that's where an RP journal like yours really comes in handy. I could list all the stuff I am comfortable with doing.. and links to any RPs so people can know if I've been flaking or not.
