what about something like this its kind of school mixed with sci-fi:

its the last semester of the year and a small close knit group of friends plan to make it extremely memorable. One of them stumbles upon an artifact or something on a class trip and the friends are sucked into sort of an alternate universe/the reverse of their own world. They have to work together to get home. In the mean time they are forced to board the school on that side of the "mirror." While their they encounter their opposites and have to sort of over come/fight themselves.

Its sketchy but I'm working on other idea skeletons too.

I kind of like that idea. But what if their places are simply swapped for the other-world selves? So they end up stuck there but everyone else mistakes them for who they're supposed to be? Their other selves could be dragged into this world and find that they like it better here so they work against each other, one group trying to get back and one group trying to stop that from happening?

So will magic be something openly practiced in the world they go to?
Maybe using elementals would be fun...

I agree using elementals will be fun and magic would be something openly practiced in the world they go to.

Would magic exist in the world they come from? It could be a secret art or a forgotten one? Like people stopped believing in it because it was outlawed a long time ago so when the elementals come from the other world their magic still works.

And that way the characters who go to the other world can learn magic there... because they already have the potential to use it in their home world.

I like the idea of it being outlawed in the world they came from. I also like the idea where they learn magic. Perhaps they come from family lines that were once powerful elementals. Maybe they've triggered, unknowingly, their magic in their home world causing small things to happen that none of them ever realized was them, that being the reason the artifact or whatever chose them to swap out/drag into this alternate world.

What if the two worlds were once the same world and split sometime in the past? The artifact connecting them could be something from the other world or the time of the split. Their other-world selves could be from a mirrored bloodline... like the same family but in different worlds?

That all sounds really good. One sec. I'm going to recap what we've got so far:

*small group of friends are swapped out with their other world selves after accidentally triggering an artifact
*Artifact is actually from the time the single world split into two
*Each group, the friends and their counterparts, are descendants from talented magic users who were very powerful. They share blood lines that were torn in two when the world divided
*IN the original world magic use is banned
*Everyone in the group have high potential for magic use causing small occurances that none of them realized they'd caused
*One group wants to stay in the original world while the main group wants to go home

Yep, that sounds about right.
I think it might be better if it is a very small group that makes the actual shift since we'll also have to have characters from both worlds...

I'm thinking that I'd have two characters, tops, make the shift. That would be four characters total when you also consider playing their other-world counter parts.

If you're comfortable having more than two make the shift, by all means go for it.

Nope I was thinking two too. Should we give them slight name variations or totally different names?

Alright. It might take me a little while to come up with character profiles. I've gotta go switch my laundry loads over but I'll make the thread and reserve a post quick.

As much as I want to do that plot idea I'm really not feeling in the mood for playing a nurturing merperson character.
Maybe we can come up with some other sort of enchanted human for you to play?

I'd be willing to play a villainous character. Maybe a person who enchanted a human to further their own plan? Maybe a plan for revenge?

Something like an enchanter/enchantress who helped a young man (probably not a human) become King but was then snubbed by that man... and seeks revenge. She can't go to his country because he put up wards against her, so she enchants a human to be his race and sends her to the King with a hidden agenda of lowering the wards so the Enchanter/Enchantress can attack.

Alright. I'll play the King character and his rival... who I'd prefer to be an enchantress. I think she and your enchanted human should talk through mirrors or something, so she can check in on the progress and keep the enchantment going strong.
