Could we do the two worlds as both being modern but one having magic be openly a part of it and the other being like our reality where magic is something only crazy people and fantasy nuts think actually exist?

Alright... so maybe the festival is just a piece of shared local history? Like from a point in time where the world split into two, one with magic and one without? Making them parallel but linked by that one thing, which allows him to travel to her world for his selections?

So maybe some people, the ones from that town, still have remnants of magic from before the split, passed down in their bloodlines and that makes them candidates...

We should probably figure out what sort of job-thingy they need the other-worldly girls for...

Well I was thinking the might need their power to keep the country intact some how, like a girl from our world keeps the two worlds apart and from merging.

Hmmm... what if the magic users are responsible for the worlds splitting in the first place? They did it to escape persecution and those would sought to restrict their powers... and to keep the worlds apart they need to sacrifice a girl's power... in a process that usually leaves them severely injured or dead... so the sacrifice happens at the start of the festival and the next girl needs to be picked by the end of the festival?

That works, but does that mean we would throw out the year thing, in the other world?

The part of the plot, where you said the guy keeps the girl in his world for a year and then boots them, unless he does a ritual.

Yet the sacrifice part tends to imply death

No... he'd still keep them in his world for a year.

The way it'd work is he takes a girl and she lives for a year in his world before the ceremony happens. That marks the beginning of the festival, renewing the bond of the world, but requiring a new girl to be picked. Once she's picked she has a year in the other world before the ceremony.

Oh I get it, that works for me.

What age do you think the characters should be? Early 20s?
