Masquerade? [ idea thread; come chat if you're interested~ ]

Call me Phantom. :B

So, I'm trying to get some idea of the level of interest the general roleplaying public has in Masquerade RPs. :0

I was thinking that this could potentially have something to do with PoTO, but doesn't necessarily have to revolve around the old plot. I also feel that there should be some sort of limit on the number of people allowed to join (these things tend to be popular and can become very chaotic very quickly).

Thoughts? Ideas?

Marionnettiste 03-03-2011 06:47 PM

I would be interested ^_^ I love small groups myself. Most Masquerade Rp's I have joined in the past have become way way too hectic. So I think a small group would be great ^_^ We should also come up with a time setting for fashions and history. Not to mention Where it takes place to help with Location. Or maybe I am over thinking the entire thing lol.

Phantom 03-03-2011 06:54 PM

Good point. :0 What about the Victorian era/19th century? And as for settings...Perhaps we stick to New York or London or Paris or something? xD

Marionnettiste 03-03-2011 07:09 PM

Paris! Almost no one does Paris xD If we are doing the 1800's, then I would want a few people familiar with the era. AKA, no cellphones or modern dresses. Lol. I have scene this a few times lol. I mean we don't have to speak french, but a little knowledge of the era would be nice.

Phantom 03-03-2011 07:21 PM

Excellent point. c: Granted, I'll definitely need to brush up on my history. x3

Where should the masquerade be held? In some old manor, perhaps? And should we incorporate some kind of plot similar to PoTO?

Marionnettiste 03-03-2011 07:26 PM

Thats up to you. Sadly I have never scene PoTO myself >.<

Phantom 03-03-2011 07:37 PM

Ah. x3 Well, either way, I really liket he idea of incorporating a haunting into the plot. Let's say...the mansion/house/whatever that the masquerade is being held in is haunted and that the ghost in question isn't particularly pleased with the fact that there are a bunch of people roaming around his house.

What do you think? :0

Marionnettiste 03-03-2011 08:04 PM

That sounds great^^ We should make the ghost have an angry cliche past xD lol

Marguerite Blakeney 03-05-2011 03:54 AM

Hey, I would totally join this if it was up. I've seen the 2004 POTO movie and read the original novel, and I'm a stickler when it comes to historical accuracy, spelling, and grammar. So which part of the 1800s were you hoping to have this around? Early (Regency), mid-to-late (Victorian)? I'm definitely willing to participate and help out in anything for this. I've always wanted to do a Masquerade RP but...they just never really went, you know?

Phantom 03-05-2011 06:37 AM

Actually, Marguerite, I'm not very familiar with this particular time period. x3 If you have any recommendations, I'd be much obliged.

And yeah, I know what you mean. It's a really popular plot-type-thing, but the roleplays never seem to get very far off the ground. :/ BUT. Ours will be different!

flamethrower1391 03-05-2011 03:40 PM

You should have it at Versailles, and the angry ghost could be King Louis XVI, and he's angry because the party-goers are descendents of Maximilien Robespierre who brought him and Marie Antoinette to the guillotine. The palace isn't exactly in Paris, but it's in the what they call today the suburbs of Paris.

Marguerite Blakeney 03-05-2011 05:47 PM

Okay, here goes my history spheal...

For starters, electricity wouldn't be in use until the late 1800s...after all, Edison invented the lightbulb in 1879, so candles and oil lamps would still be in use, however, for wide distribution I'm not quite sure when palaces would have been hooked up with it.

Queen Victoria was on the British throne from 1837-1901, and before 1837 it was her Uncle William who was King of England. She was age 18 when she became Queen. She married Prince Albert in 1840. Starting in 1845, Ireland had the potato blight/potato famine, and lasted for four years. Prince Albert died in 1861, so from then on, Victoria was a widow.

In France, Napoleon was ruler from 1804-1814, and for a short time in 1815, which is generally the Regency era. His wife Josephine popularized the empire-waistline dress, which would be the fashion of the time. Pretty much around this time the Napoleonic Wars are happening (i.e. Battle of Waterloo).

There are a lot of rulers and power-shifts in between all this, since France is still trying to stabilize its government, but Napoleon III would be President of the French Second Republic from 1848-1852. He's the last of the French monarchy.

As for Versailles itself, you can just brush up on the Wikipedia page here Palace of Versailles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and try to figure stuff out. So from 1852-onward, the palace became a museum and was also used to host state events, so a party there would be plausible. And yes, the palace is definitely outside of Paris.

I actually remembered all that from history class. Which is funny, cause I'm pretty sure I got a C for that unit.:P

Anyways, I would really love to join this, if it gets going. I've been wanting to try a more history based RP, but nothing like an actual story going on in the streets of Victorian era London or something, which I know next to nothing about. So yeah, this really interests me.

Marionnettiste 03-05-2011 08:10 PM

flamethrower1391- That sounds wonderful!

Marguerite Blakeney- Awesome^^ I remember some of that from history, but not all of it, so thank you ^_^

Marguerite Blakeney 03-05-2011 08:41 PM

I have to memorize that info xD I'm a history major.

AnniMahffins 03-05-2011 09:14 PM

I'd love to join in on the fun! :D I don't have an extensive background on Phantom either, but this sounds pretty cool.

Marguerite Blakeney 03-10-2011 12:26 AM

So, Phantom, any ideas where you want to go with this so far?

Phantom 03-10-2011 01:11 AM

Versailles it is. :D In the late-ish Victorian area, I gather? Totally fine with all of this.

So...would Napoleon be our ghost? xD Or the ghost could be purely imagined and not actually play a role.

I was kind of hoping it would, but whatever. :B

Marguerite Blakeney 03-10-2011 01:27 AM

Sounds perfectly all right. As for the role of the ghost, we still would need someone who would want to play the old dude haunting everyone, unless we make him accessible to everyone.

Phantom 03-10-2011 05:51 AM

Oooo..It could be fun to just let anyone play him. x3 Could help add interest if the plot begins to lag or something.

Marguerite Blakeney 03-11-2011 12:03 AM

We can all develop the character anyway, so if one person thinks of something the others can't get a hold of but fits really well with the character, it could work.

flamethrower1391 03-13-2011 03:04 AM

Marionnettiste- Thank you. When someone said Paris, I wasn't too keen on it. But at the same time, I was listening to a japanese metal band called Versailles, and the idea was born.
