Nothing too big, though. Just big enough to have all the needed buildings(grocery, clothing, weapons if needed XD, etc)...

Modern times is fine. :3 I can totally imagine how weird it'll be for an elf, and a socreress to be on the subway train, with the early morning commuters. "I've bloody dagger hanging off my hip... I've got a bloody dagger hanging off my hip! Oh, by the gods and goddesses... please, let no one notice it." :lol:

So, you want to set it in a small town. Should the town be special, like, it's the burial sight of something magical; so a bunch of supernatural things come from and to the town. Or... it could be in the middle point of a magic Pentagram, that was drawn across the country our character's live in, to open up a portal to "elsewhere", hundreds of years ago.

Traveling to places bigger, stranger, or more heavily populated is a must. :) There's always got to be that one place that makes them go, "Well, shoot... our hole-in-the-wall town is better than this place, and we don't even get cable...!" :XD

I was thinking they had once been friends but as they got older he kinda got mixed up in the wrong crowd, maybe there had been a bad falling out between them? I was thinking they had to spend a long time alone together for whatever reason and as they talked, just the two of them, she starts to see that under all the garbage he'd cloaked himself in he was still the same good guy she remembered. And thus began the beginning of either a new friendship or a new romance :).
