Yuni went inside her dorm room, bowing to Kai before closing the door behind her gently. She pulled her suitcase up beside the bed, then plopped down on it herself, staring at the ceiling.
A soft growling in her stomach reminded her that she hadn't eaten anything since her parents left her at the train station yesterday. With a sigh, Yuni sat up, rummaging through her skirt pockets to see if she had
any money.
"Let's see..." she murmered, thin fingers pulling a few small somethings out. "A button...a glass marble....and a nickel? That's it??"
The worried frown on her face grew deeper, and she shifted position slightly, til she could reach her single little suitcase. She unzipped the front pocket, praying that, just maybe, there was something in there. Slender fingers slid inside...and she felt paper crinkle.
Yuni pulled her hand out, a single dollar bill clutched in her fingers. She carefully smoothed the money out, laying the paper bill beside the tarnished nickel.
A dollar and five cents... she thought, rather hopelessly.
I might be able to afford a pack of crackers out of the snack machine......
Yuni sighed, putting her face in her hands. "This is hopeless," she muttered. Getting to her feet, she ignored her stomach telling her that it was time for food, and knelt beside her suitcase, unzipping it.
She began putting up her few belongings, hanging her skirts and sweaters in the closet and tucking her night clothes, under garments, and her single T-shirt and shorts set into the tiny chest-of-drawers next to the bed.
That done, she set her alarm clock on the nightstand, her one and only book (that she was allowed to call HERS, anyway) beside it. A thin pad of paper and a small box of artists' pencils went on top of the chest-of-drawers. And that was it. She was done unpacking.
But she was still hungry.
