Andy let him hold her. It was comforting to know that he still loved her, even after everything that had happened. She still felt like there should have been something she could have done, some way for her to protect the baby better than she had. It felt like it was her fault that she'd miscarried. She blinked back tears as it really started to hit her.
His hand slowly made it's way up to her cheaks and sighed. "I've already seen you crying, go ahead, I understand..." He whispered and slowly ran his thumb over her cheek and waited silently. "I don't blame you, Andy. I never have and I never will."
Andy couldn't help it, she buried her face in his shoulder and cried.
"I should have been able to do something," she said, muffled by his shoulder. "I should have been able to protect the baby better..." Her worry and grief spilled out, and she couldn't help but keep crying. |
Nat sighed, pulling her closer but still attempting to be gentle with the girl. "Fate controls everything we do, and if fate meant we weren't supposed to have that child, then we weren't. There is nothing you could have done, and it isn't your fault." He was guessing at what she was saying, it was muffled and he could only make out every other word. But it was important to him that she didn't feel bad about it. "I love you, Andy. I do... I wouldn't have asked you to marry me twenty times if I hadn't..." He said and rubbed her shoulder gently as tears trailed down his cheeks. It still hurt, it didn't matter if it was fate.
Andy stayed in his arms for a while, just crying. Eventually, she tired herself out and fell asleep against him, comforted by his presence. She would probably blame herself for a while, no matter what he said, but she felt better when he was there with her.
Nathaniel held her as she fell asleep. About 30 minutes later a nurse asked him to get on his own bed and he nodded, the woman unplugging the bed after setting it up and wheeled it a bit closer to the girl and winked, helping him into the beds. He was flushed that anyone had to help him. He was supposed to be strong and manly, but he couldn't do it. This hurt more than it needed too. Emotionally and physically.
Andy slept for a while afterwards, barely even stirring when the nurse came in to check her vitals. She was exhausted, physically, mentally, and emotionally. She was probably going to sleep for a while, if only because it hurt less that way. There was no doubt she would wake up if her mother came back to visit with Riley, though.
Nathaniel woke the next morning when he felt a large 'flump' on his bed. He opened his eyes and smiled as he saw Riley stumbling on the bed towards him. "Hey you rascal." Nathaniel said and grabbed the boy, kissing his cheeks and forehead as the boy giggled. "MOMMY!" He rolled his eyes and glanced over at the other bed, where Andy's family surrounded her. He sat up with his son and waited for them to break so Andy could have her son.
Andy woke up when she heard Riley, and carefully sat up.
"Riley, baby, no jumping all over your dad," she said as she moved her bed up. She was glad her mother had brought Riley back, she felt more comfortable when her son was with her. Reaching over with her power, she carefully picked up her son and floated him over to her, settling him on her lap. |
Nathaniel moved to pull himself into his wheelchair, yawning. He wheeled to the family and grinned, checking her check sheets. "Hmmm..." He moved to flip the sheets. They're coming in every hour. I doubt they're going to let you out by tomorrow if they're still checking every hour." He said and then frowned, looking at Jason. "Do you mind dropping Riley and I off at the house before going to yours?"
Jason raised an eyebrow.
"They'll let you go so soon?" he asked. He was surprised, usually they kept people longer than that. After a moment, he shrugged. "I mean, I can give you a ride back, sure. It'll take a few minutes to move the car seat into the truck, but that's not a problem." |
"I've got a broken leg. The released me when it was in a cast. I just made it clear I'd be staying with her last night. So I got to keep my bed." He said and smiled. He touched her leg from above the covers. He yawned and stretched. "Okay, so it was a bit more than a broken leg, but I was still released." He muttered and then smiled. "You brought Nana?" He said, grinning as his vision ended and then heard the unmistakeable footsteps of the woman from down the hall.
"She insisted," Jason replied with a shrug. Andy couldn't hold back a soft snort.
"Yeah, just try telling Nana she can't do something," she said. "It doesn't work." "Yeah, really," Jason added. "Besides, I think she's been getting bored just mentoring Danny." |
"Danny shouldn't think of it as punishment. I wish I had her as a mentor much earlier in life." Nathaniel said and felt Andy's grandmothers hands rest on his shoulders. He didn't jump because he wasn't surprised. Instead he reached up and patted her hand.
"And you're right too, you were in serious need of a mentor." He grinned and looked up at her. "Is he getting visions yet?" The woman nodded and smiled. "Fuzzy, but make outable." Nathaniel grinned and his stomach growled. "I'm starved. Who wants to walk with me to the cafeteria. Or wheel me there? Same diff." |
"I would offer to race you there, but I was always told not to tease cripples," Jason joked. Andy rolled her eyes at the bad joke and gave him a mental shove, making him stumble against the wall. Riley giggled at it, and she bounced him in her lap a bit. She felt better with both him and Nathaniel there with the rest of her family. Hearing Jason attempt to joke around with Nathaniel set her more at ease, too. It meant that Jason was finally getting over himself.
Nathaniel rose an eyebrow. "I'd whip you anyday. You're on. Oh, and no using your powers!" He said and laughed, wheeling out, just after telling his fiancee he'd be back in Jason-speed flash. He was happy he could consider these people in his very small family. He liked the idea of having a real family, especially one so caring and involved.
Andy couldn't help but laugh a bit as she watched them go. She had no doubt that Jason would still use a little bit of speed, but he would keep himself down to a 'normal' range, for the most part. He was competitive, after all.
"I'm glad they're getting along, finally," she said. |
Her grandmother sat down in one of the chairs and nodded. "I told you they would. They just needed to feel fear for each other. Nathaniel was worried about how he'd feel about you, and Jason was worried for both you and Nathaniel. It was a bonding I suppose. They're boys, much easier to figure out than you think."
** Nathaniel frowned. "You used!" He said when they made it to the cafeteria. Damn elevators were so slow. Jason took the stairs. When they were done getting food both were laughing as they entered the room. Nathaniel gave Andy her plate and smiled, moving to eat his own. |
"I did not," Jason replied promptly. At least, not in any measurable way. "The stairs are just quicker."
"I worry about them, too," Andy said to her grandmother, before the guys got back. Riley had gotten bored and started to nap in her arms, and she held him close. She sighed. "They shouldn't have to worry about me, though. I can take care of myself, for the most part." She carefully didn't say anything about her miscarriage. |
Nathaniel finished his food first and then took Riley. "Hey bud." He said to the tired child. He rocked him to keep him asleep, wondering just how much longer he could hold the child, he was getting large. He held up the boy and smiled as the family chatted quietly around them.
Andy let Nathaniel take their son for a bit. She knew it was just as comforting to him to have Riley nearby as it was for her.
"I don't think he slept well last night," she said softly. "He usually doesn't like naps. I think he missed us, and wouldn't sleep." Reaching over, she gently tugged Riley's thumb out of his mouth, careful not to wake him. "That isn't good for him," she added. |
Nathaniel smiled and kissed the males foreheadm "I never understood that, what's wrong with sucking your thumb? I'm pretty sure I did it as a baby. I doubt my family cared enough to pull it out of my mouth." He muttered and looked at Andy with curious eyes.
"It'll affect his teeth as they come in," Andy replied. "And we need to break him of the habit early, or else he'll never stop." There had been a girl in her high school classes who sucked her thumb all the time, and it showed. Her thumb was constantly torn up from her teeth, and her teeth were a bit crooked themselves.
"Ewww. Are my teeth messed up babe?" He asked, finally understanding why he'd gotten braces. He sighed and shifted the chair, so he could hold Riley with one arm, and with his other hand he could hold Andy's. He glanced at her, and sighed. "When we get home, we're buying him a tricycle. And from here on out he only rides bikes. Nothing with a motor. I couldn't stand to see him in another car accident."
Andy held his hand and squeezed it gently.
"We can't keep him from it forever," she reminded him. "Eventually, he's going to want a motorcycle or a car or something like that... And you're going to give him one, because you're going to spoil him rotten." |
