Lorenzo suddenly felt very awkward. The guy couldn't have been more than 25, and he'd already been married and subsequently lost his wife? He shifted his weight to one foot, occupying his hands by picking under his nails.

"Oh, uh, that blows," he managed, eyes lowered to the dirty kitchen tile, "Well, at least she was fortunate enough to have died before the worst of the outbreak."

He cleared his throat, running his hand through his hair. A nervous tick of his. "Anyway, looks like we're gonna be up for awhile. You smoke?" His eyes drifted to the pack of cigarettes on his nightstand. "We can go out on the fire escape and keep --"

He was cut off by a shrill scream from outside, followed by a cry for help. Lorenzo cursed under his breath. Just what I needed, he thought bitterly, More survivors.
