Onyx hugged Becca's mom tightly as both the parents said their farewells before heading off to bed. That's when The stranger came back out. Onyx couldn't help but simply gawk at how handsome he was. The same colored hair as Becca, but definitely a different eye color. His was hazel, as Becca's was an almost sapphire blue. This man was a natural looker.

When Becca had introduced her to him, she couldn't help but over process the words little brother, he definetly looked and seemed older than fragile little Becca. Realizing she was probably being rude, she offered a small smile to him and a short, "Hey," to him as well.

Becca eventually brought up that she should shower and how Onyx should play nice. "Don't worry, I won't throw a plate at him," she retorted with humor evident in her voice.

That's when Matt asked her a question. She thought about the question carefully. Onyx didn't want to make herself look like a fool in front of Matt. After all, he seemed like her type. "Not really. Becca and your parents are pretty much all I have. If being a pain in the ass is included in the package, I'll take it." Onyx said this with a small smile.

Feeling the time drag on slightly, Onyx looked up at the huge clock hanging on the wall near the couch, Becca had been gone for a solid fifteen minutes. Onyx knew Becca wasn't one to take long showers, so she must've fallen asleep. "I think Becca fell asleep. She probably really needed it after tonight," Onyx said this with a slight bit of stress to her voice, her mind going over everything she had seen and heard. Onyx would definitely not be sleeping alone for awhile.

Matt's smile faded and a look of concern came over him. So, although Becca had made the night seem like no big deal, it had been. He should have known. His sister was always making her disastrous life seem like no big deal. That's why he was so protective over her. Little did Onyx know, that officially meant he was protective of her. She was his sister's best friend after all. Not to mention, he was developing the hots for her with each passing moment.

He leaned forward towards her. "What exactly happened tonight?" he asked her, hoping she'd actually tell him the truth. Getting comfortable for what he predicted to be a stressful story, he tugged his plain white t-shirt down to give his muscles a little breathing room, and kicked his shoes off. He never wore shoes at home, and little did he know, he'd be calling this place home for good, real soon.

"Sasha...?" He asked as he sat up to look at her. "I've done it again, gone too long from eating, heh." The wolf stared down at him for what seemed like forever before she nudged him with her muzzles and something else. He didn't know what it was, it sure wasn't human and it was barely alive. It looked like some type of animal. Aiden groaned "...you know I hate these food sources." The wolf simply dropped the animal in front of him and pinned it down with a large paw, and whined at him showing concern.

"Fine... it's my fault anyway." He mumbled as he crouched down and biting into the furry neck. It was going have to do. Ignoring the feel of fur in his mouth, he focused on the less than pleasing blood. Not only him drinking from a animal was disgusting so was the blood but it did the job.

Aiden pulled away from the animal when he completely drained it. If anyone was to come by, they were sure to not be able to sleep for weeks and if they did the wouldn't want to fall asleep again. Aiden wiped what was left of the blood of his moth and on his hand, careful not get any on his white shirt. "Missed you girl." He told the wolf as he stood up and briefly petted her. The wolf standing on all fours was as tall as where his hip was. You could compare it to a large Great Dane but in the form of a wolf.

The wolf raised up and placed her front limbs on either side of his shoulders and gave him a lick in the face. Aiden gently pushed her way before she got another lick in before wiping his face in playfull disgust. "I want to go check on something.. could you get rid of that.. thing?" Aiden narrowed his eyes when he referred to the animal as a thing. Without checking to see if she would, Aiden ran off towards Rebecca's house.
Sasha watched him leave before picking up the animal with her large jaws and trotted off into the forest to find a spot to bury it. When she found a suitable spot she began digging.
It didn't take him long at all to reach the house on his own two legs. He walked up to the side of the house, away from view from any windows as he listened in. It seemed Onyx was down stairs talking with someone but it wasn't Rebecca. Where is she? Aiden listened for heart beats, and he could tell there was three in another part of the house. Upstairs. Aiden looked for tree that was close to a window to climb onto.

The window happened to be cracked when he reached it, what luck. He peered inside to see if anyone was there. Scanning the room his eyes laid upon Rebecca, and just when he was going to duck out of view he noticed she was asleep. Perfect!. If there ever was a time to get that pendant now was the time. He gingerly opened up the window as to make any noise and slipped inside.

Aiden walked over to Rebecca to see if she had the pendant and she didn't. Which meant she took it off and put it somewhere but where? He was staring at her for too long. She looked so peaceful in her sleep despite what she's been through. She kind of reminded him of the stories of sleeping beauty. When she moved, he backed away ready to bolt or hide but she didn't wake up. He let out a quiet sigh of relief as he searched around the room.

Onyx sighed as he asked her this question. She didnt feel like explaining, so she decided to just hit the main points.

"Basically, a normal party. People sucking on each others faces, people gushing over alcohol, and dancing. Me and Becca got separated for awhile, finally meeting up again outside. When a local girl came stumbling out of the woods, blood all over Tinker Bell costume. I thought it was a joke, her trying to scare everyone since this was a Halloween costume. But that's when everything turned into pure chaos. There was a man, and he said something that basically sent me into a panic. That's when me and Becca began running for our lives, practically." Onyx looked to the ground, she wanted the finish this story without getting distracted by how good Matt looked right now in the lighting.

"I was stupid enough to run back to grab something that I had forgotten. There was already bodies just strewn across the room. It was pretty gruesome. That's when I lost Becca for a few more hours. I ran to my house and then here, to see if she was around. And now I'm here."

Onyx finished the story looking up into Matt's eyes, waiting to see his reaction to the story.

((Frustrated right now because I had a long, amazing post, but then my thing crashed and I had to retype it, and just gave up))

((I need to get back involved with this >.>))

The girl had left some time ago and the boy had tried to pass by the kitchen silently. Kaled took no notice - he had taken a seat at the kitchen table, a cold cup of tea in his hands. His muscles were thinly tensed, twitching minutely under his skin if one were to look at the correct places. The memory of the power that the child had possessed lingered with him, calling out to him, begging him to take it into his hands so that it could be used to it's full and glorious potential. He closed his eyes.

Tonight he had missed a chance to take it for his own - the girl had been too suspicious, and with the added threat of another wandering around his halls he couldn't very well overpower her. She wouldn't do as a sacrifice either, though she may have made for a few small meals. Then again, maybe not. He had never eaten another of his kind, no matter who they were. Unless, of course, they were rather rude. He always made exceptions for those who felt it necessary to discard the delicate procedures of the social structure and be brash and harsh in language and movements.

Kaled needed - a physical aching need from deep in the pit of his stomach where he could feel his magic eddying - whatever the child had to come into his possession. He should've asked her to hand it over but without the proper knowledge all he would have been able to do was get her bag and then rummage through it which was not only rude but rather suspicious. More research had to be done - he remembered seeing this particular girl in his services before though he couldn't quite bring up the last time she attended. But once he found out just what it was she had been hiding in her bag he would take it for his own.

Perhaps, in the morning light after my first obligations, I shall go to the town.

If he felt the power at the edge of his confined range around the church than it would be easy enough to track it over a larger area. He was thankful that Farefield was relatively small - it would take less time to pinpoint the location.

[I]But the location of it isn't everything I need to find. I also need a reason for being out other than buying groceries, and once I have tracked the item I need an explanation to get inside the house.

Or, he supposed, he could very well get himself invited in and take it as his own.

He smiled. The advantages of a sharp tongue.

However the night was drawing longer and he could do nothing at the current time. Kaled stood, the cup pouring it's contents into the sink before rinsing and drying itself before floating back into the cupboard. He quietly made his way into his own room, closing the door softly behind him. Quickly he went through his routine - exchanging a cassock for a soft shirt and cotton bottoms, folding everything neatly onto a chair, preparing the bed. He settled in, electric lights flickering once before shutting off.

Tomorrow is another day. One that I will use to it's full advantage.

Carmen hurt everywhere - even the blood still rushing through her veins felt like it had been replaced with fire, licking at her insides and scorching her bones. Her world had been made up entirely of pain.

She was still as a wolf, large and panting on her side, and she didn't know where she was. Deeper into the forest than she was accustomed to for sure for all she could see in her filed of vision were trees and bushes and rocks and more trees. Her sister had disappeared a long while ago after they had fought though Carmen couldn't remember the specifics of what happened. She remembered vague bits and pieces, taking swipes at flesh and having chunks taken out of both herself and her twin.

Tired, she was so tired, all she wanted to do was sleep - but she couldn't. She needed to heal, to rest, to find her sister and give her a rather large piece of her mind. Or, or maybe not. She wouldn't be able to restrain herself around her sister anymore. This fight was the straw that broke the camel's back - there was no returning to the tenuous truce they had before. If Carmen were to see Clara she would probably try to rip her throat out and laugh while she did it. The undead were all so stuck up and snobbish, thinking that they were to have full reign of the world around them, that all humans were theirs for the hunting to drain and bleed them dry and waste most of the sweet flesh and meat that they provided.

The moving corpses had to go, one way or another. Wolves were at the top of their food-chain in the wild - it only made sense for 'wolves to be the apex predator in the human realm.

~*~

There was a burning hate boiling in the pit of her stomach, roiling waves that splashed against the side of her composure. Down her side were long, deep, and evenly spaced gashes - a present from her absent twin who she hoped was lying dying in a ditch out in the forest, bleeding out from the inside from ruptured organs. But Clara knew the mutt would be back. A couple of broken bones and a bloody liver was something even the idiot could survive. Clara on the other hand...

She had come too close to a fatal death than she would like to admit. Her sisters jaws had almost wrapped around her flesh, almost pierced her skin before she punched the wolf rather hard on the nose, sending it harshly to the ground. If she had been any slower in responding she wouldn't be standing, slowly making her way out of the forest as the wounds knitted together to restore her to how she was before. No, she would be dead. Killed by the one she hated most - that would be unacceptable. Clara came far too close to her end this night, something that she had to ensure would never be the case again.

The dumb dogs all have to go. Every last one of them, forget keeping them as pets and playthings. If their species exists I am threatened - as the superior form of being this should not be the case. I am at the top of the food-chain here and no wolf will take it from me.

Rest, recuperate, plan. There was a way to exterminate them - I just have to find out how.

Randolph winced as the doctor probed the now healed scars on his leg. “Son, the paramedic's report, as well as the nurse that first saw you reported a wolf bite on your leg, but this has been healed for some time... I suspect that in the chaos the blood from the victims confused things, and they mistook an old wound for a new wound. You do seem to be running a tiny bit of a fever...”

“Doc, it's embarrassing enough that I passed out, please don't make it look like I'm a hypochondriac too.”

“There's nothing to be ashamed of, son, you held up until the crisis was over, and judging from the wounded and worse they've brought in, it was horrific out there.” The Doctor sighed. “But if you insist, I'll clear you to go back. Captain Saunders has been calling every five minutes wanting to know when you'll be able to report what happened. “

“I'd better get back then.”

“I'll send a nurse with the release form, then.” The Doctor left Randolph alone with his thoughts.

The man, or was he a vampire or a witch, had been right. The wound healing so quickly was a sign that the curse had stuck, and he was now a werewolf. His thoughts churned, as the man's questions ran through his head again and again. Would he be strong enough to maintain his grip on right and wrong, or would he give into the beast and become a true monster? He briefly entertained thoughts of suicide, but decided it was too soon to give up, he had until the next full moon at very least.
The nurse came with papers for him to sign, and he did so, not paying much attention to them. When they let him go, he made the short walk to the police station, still lost in his thoughts.

((D: That sucks! I usually copy mine as I go so that doesn't happen. Also, I'm going to pretend Onyx said the word vampire, to avoid going in circles without getting anywhere and get on with my plan for Matt. :)
Hope everything is okay Bee! ))

Matt just watched Onyx for a moment when she was done with her story. He was expressionless. He'd heard the news stories about the wolves attacking. Now he'd heard Onyx's story. Was she pulling his leg? Vampires?

The wolf story hadn't added up anyway. Not to mention, talk of vampires ran rampant in his family. From his mother's side, going back generations. It wasn't like the word or concept was something new to him. Still, he'd never actually believed any of them. Him and Bec had always just made jokes of the stories. They never took that stuff seriously.

Yet, something about Onyx made him want to believe her. Not to mention, his sister had had scrapes all over. It added up with Onyx's story of them running away. There was forest all around that old mansion at the edge of town. Not to mention, Becca had never been one to hang out with pranksters or liars. So Onyx couldn't be like that.

"Hmmm," he finally said. He didn't want to tell her he didn't believe her, but he didn't want to say he did either. He didn't really know what to believe yet. Though he couldn't imagine that anyone would make up a crazy story, over a story that was already as crazy as a pack of hungry wolves attacking a huge party. That sounded ridiculous, too.

Well no matter what happened, he was sure the girls had been through a lot. It rather pissed him off really. That Becca had said it was all no big deal, and that they'd been running for their very lives. He wondered something now. "What made you go back for a book?" Couldn't she have just replaced it? Matt for one wasn't a big reader, and he'd never have risked his life for literature. Gross.

~~~*~~~*~~~
It was doubtful that Aiden would know where to look for the pendant, since he wouldn't be able to smell it out. The entire room and everything in it smelled like Becca. Besides, her hiding spot was awesome. It was the same place she kept her diary.
Becca was dreaming. Not quite a dream, not quite a nightmare. Everything seemed normal, though there was an air of something, evil, about. Becca was with Onyx and they were at Skull Creek Crossing. It was overcast, as always, and foggy. They couldn't see the other end of the bridge, but there was something there. Something watching them. Something bad.
The fog began to clear and Becca could see a figure there. It was a person. A man, with blonde hair. He motioned for her to come. Becca was in her nightgown and barefoot. She took a step forward onto the bridge. As she did it creaked and a gust of wind blew over her, chilling her to the bone and bringing the scent of cinnamon and maybe, vanilla, to her nose.
Suddenly the terror in the dream became something nearly tangible. Fear gripped her as she moved but she was unable to stop herself from crossing over the bridge. The fog cleared and Becca saw that the person at the end of the bridge no longer had blonde hair, but black. It was the man from the party, the vampire. He had blood running down his chin and he was smiling, beckoning for Becca, and she was powerless to stop herself.
As she neared the end of the bridge her heart was racing, as it was in her real life as well. She stopped right in front of the vampire. He bared his fangs and without another moment wasted, he struck with the quickness of a snake.
Becca gasped and her eyes flew open and she sat up in bed. There in front of her was the vampire! No, it was Aiden. She blinked and he was gone. Becca reached over and turned on her lamp. Her room was empty. There was no one there but her. No vampire, and no Aiden. Her mind was playing tricks on her again.
She was breathing heavily and her heart was still racing. Another gust of wind chilled her. What? Oh, the window. But, it was open all the way. She'd thought it had been only cracked. She was too tired to remember for sure. And she was going crazy, too. She was sure of it.
Becca stood and padded across the wooden floor to the window which she shut all the way. She closed her eyes and shook her head. Where was Onyx? Probably sleeping in the guest room if not in here. She didn't think anything else into it. She needed sleep. And probably therapy.
She moved back to her bedside lamp, turning it off before climbing back into bed. She lay there for a few minutes, her heart calming down and her breathing returning to normal before her eyes finally drifted closed. The scent of cinnamon and vanilla lingered in her nostrils as she fell into sleep once again.
((I really hope this post came together. There are so many different loud noises going on here and so many people talking to me. I can't think straight for shit. -_-))
((That's a good idea. I'm seriously laughing at the therapy thing, I just find it hilarious.))
Onyx leaned deeper into the couch. Tonight had been a long night, what with the party and throwing a plate at a stranger. This town was seriously getting to her. All the gossip on how vampires and werewolves and other creatures roamed the town, Onyx believed none of it until tonight.
Looking over at Matt, she could see he was having an internal conflict with himself on whether to believe her or not. She couldn't blame him, she wouldn't believe herself either if she hadnt witnessed all that had happened tonight.
Seeing something shuffle towards her direction,Onyx looked to see Memow clumsily making her way over. Onyx smiled at the kitten and picked her up, setting her on Onyx's lap, petting the kittens fur gently.
Onyx scrunched up her nose at Matt's question. Why had she gone back for the book? Chancing her life, and ending up in the same room of a creepy priest, that book really wasnt worth the hassle, but then again, it was.
"See, I'm a writer. And I'm currently writing a fantasy novel of a young witch who is just discovering his powers and learning to cope. Becca found this old book of supposed spells, and knowing I was writing a book about it, she bought it and gave it to me. I've literally almost lost all hope in my writing, and this book gave me my hope back. There was no way in hell I was going to leave it to be collected as evidence for the police," Onyx said this with a small yawn afterwords, after tonight, sleep wasnt coming soon enough.
((I love how cheesy I was about what her book was about, so maybe Onyx could relate to it better later on xD))
Aiden had no luck in searching for the pendant, but still checked around. He even went checked around as close he would dare to get around Rebecca. But he had no such luck, so Aiden went to the foot of the bed, and turned towards Rebecca, whilst scanning the room. He was going to keep an eye her just in case she woke up, he didn't want her finding him around. Sometime when he looked away she shot up in bed like something swiftly pulled her up. He was alittle surprised but when he gathered himself he made like the wind and left. Hopefully she didn't see him but even if she did it looked like she might have been having a nightmare.
Rebecca could possible blame her mind for playing tricks on her after alll she's been through. Aiden looked back towards the window. Dammit, I forgot to close the window. It should be fine. He thought as he stood there for two more seconds before sprinting off back to his usually hangout spot, the cemetery. And once he got there he was greeted by Sasha. "Let's go home, need to go tidy up the place. Besides I need to change, can't wear the same thing... I already have a unsavory title." He narrowed his eyes as he thought about it.
It took them awhile to get to where Bloodlake Camp was, because Sasha couldn't nearly run as fast with her being just a normal unique creature. But once they got there, she decided to take a nap by the front door on the inside of the house. The particular spot so she can still guard the house without being seen and sneaked upon. Plus it will give her the element of surprised, no one would suspect a wolf to be in a house.
Aiden on the other hand just paced around the house for quite along time thinking about all of what happened today and possible strategies. After a hour or two, maybe more or less, he decided to just call it a night. He didn't really need to sleep but it helped speed things along quite nicely.
I call him Lord Hiro, because it's blatantly obvious to me he once was a lord. Even if he isn't now. And as for why I call you lord is, I feel as if I am unworthy of your attentions. The crimson haired vampire admitted with a blush. He felt embarrassed to be stating this but was also feeling more comfortable around the blond by the moment. He didn't even care if it was going to leave him broke and mugged on the side of the road for trusting him. Varten had not been around others for so long he craved the contact.
Then it came. The physical contact. Kasimir put his arm around his waist. Varten continued to walk with Kasimir's hand on his waist, even though it made him frightened. It felt good to be in contact with someone that seemed interested in him. Well we don't talk much anymore. But when we do it's almost as if we had stayed friends. I think he was just lonely. At least that's what I've always told myself over the years when doubt steps in.
"Hiro was a prince, actually. Rightful heir and all that nonsense, he doesn't like talking about himself though. Painful memories I suppose, but that's his story to tell not mine." Kasimir spoke the words easily, as if such details weren't important at all, and really why would such things be important? "Trust me, if you weren't worthy of my attentions, I wouldn't be giving it to you." He pulled Varten even closer, if that was at all possible with his arm around the other's waist.
"I'd probably be lonely, living so long like that without a friend or lover at my side. Still, to turn someone like that, when they aren't thinking clearly or to even force it on someone violently, just isn't right. Vampires shouldn't be trusted easily." He said that, about not trusting vampires and yet here he was, hanging all over one he barely knew. Not to mention that he'd been wandering around for a year or more with Alistair, following the vampire like a lost puppy..Well, it was more like Alistair followed him around like a lost puppy, but that didn't matter.
Alistair made his way quickly and quietly, slipping around the house into the backyard and from there into the woods. Effortlessly avoiding cops and paramedics. Slipping away unseen. A frown on his lips, that hand, the one that had grabbed the cross was still clenched tightly into a tight fist. Fingernails biting hard into the burn on his palm. It didn't take him long to find Kasimir and Varten's trail. Their scents unmistakable, clearly different. Easy to follow. At least, Kasimir's scent was easy to follow for Alistair. So familiar with it from all the time he spent with the blonde human. He glided like a shadow almost, as he followed their trail. Quiet, each movement as seamless as flowing water. He was just another shadow melding into the other shadows of his surroundings. Mostly thanks to the black of his costume...Ruined with the blood of the vampires he had killed in Varten's house. That was alright, the costume should have been thrown away a long time ago anyway.
Randolph looked at the list the Captain had given him. Rebecca Dalton was the last person on it. The list consisted of people who survivors had been reported being at the party by survivors, but were not among the wounded at the hospital or the dead at the morgue. He was supposed to check to make sure that they had made it home, and report back. There were a few bodies so mangled as not to be easily identifiable, and there might be people who had run off into the woods, injured, and not made it back out.
Randolph winced as he remembered the Captains reaction to his report. No, he hadn't actually been injured, he had just passed out. No, he hadn't killed the wolf he shot at, although he had hit it. No, there had only been one that he saw. No, he hadn't seen anything else suspicious. The Captain hadn't acted scornful or annoyed, which Randolph could've handled, but more disappointed, and Randolph knew he wasn't getting any closer to being trusted.
He reached the Dalton's house, and parked. So far, everyone he'd been sent to check on had made it home, and he hoped Rebecca had too. As he got out of the car and headed to the door, he noticed there were lights on, so at least someone was up. He rang the doorbell, and waited for someone to answer.
Matt nodded seriously. It wasn't like he'd never done anything stupid for something he thought to be important. Who hadn't? He could tell Onyx was clearly shaken up by the night, and exhausted. He placed a hand on her shoulder to give her some reassuring words, but before any came, the doorbell rang.
"Excuse me," he said as he hopped up quickly so that his parents wouldn't be woken. Not that they really would anyway. His father could sleep through a hurricane, and he snored louder than a bear, thus, keeping their mother from hearing anything else either. Matt opened up the wooden door with the large professionally fogged glass window to see a police man standing there.
Onyx and his sister were here safe, so surly the cop wasn't delivering any bad news. At least not tonight. He was the same height as Matt, more blonde, and with eyes similar to his sister's. "How can I help you officer?" he asked, still serious and anxious just at the sight of the officer. What was he here for? Was there still trouble about?
A young man answered the door. Well, probably not that much younger then Randolph, but still. “I'm looking for Rebecca Dalton? She was seen at the party tonight, and we want to make sure she got home safely.” Randolph could tell the man was a little nervous, but he had found that was normal when a police officer rang the doorbell. Those guilty of something worried they'd be caught, and the innocent worried something was wrong, like perhaps a loved one had been injured or involved in a crime. He tried to make his tone as reassuring as possible.
Well, his sister was probably asleep, and she was here just fine. But Matt knew it would be required of the officer to see her personally, so he knew for sure she was alive and well. He glanced over his shoulder at Onyx and then back at the police officer.
"You can come in," he said, "I need to go upstairs and get Bec. Onyx there was at the party, too. If you have any questions, she can probably answer some of them." He stepped aside and allowed the officer in before shutting the door. He turned and made his way up the stairs, swingin by the bathroom before anything else, since it had been hours since his bladder had had any relief.
Randolph nodded, and entered, looking around to determine where Onyx was. He saw a young woman with long, wavy, black hair and gray eyes sitting on the couch. “Are you Onyx?” He did his best to appear non-threatening. “I'm Lieutenant Randolph Smythe.” He made a quick check to make sure she wasn't injured in way before continuing, noticing that as her hair was wet, she had probably showered. He wondered if she had had to wash off blood.
“If you were at the party, I do have a few questions I need to ask. “ He paused. “I know it was probably a frightening experience, and probably the last thing you want to do right now is relive it for me, but the things you remember may help us figure out exactly what went on, or if there is anyone still missing.”
Feeling the warmth of Matts hand on her shoulder, almost made her shiver. He was so warm on such a cold night. And believe it or not, Onyx was REALLY attracted to Matt.
Hearing a knock on the door, and the absence of Matt, Onyx became slightly nervous. Maybe it was just Creeper coming back, or maybe something worse. Something that had been at the party. That's when Onyx heard muffled voices, hearing the word Lieutenant, Onyx instantly relaxed. He was probably just checking in on everyone to make sure things were alright. But thats when the police officer came into the living room, and asked if she were Onyx.
"Uh, yeah. I'm Onyx. And it's totally cool, I'm willing to go through it again to make sure others can be safe," Onyx said this somewhat confidently, and she was proud of herself for this. But on the inside, she was about ready to burst out into years and cry for the family that hates her so much now.
((Sorry Kas! Didn't see you'd already made your post! ))
Matt knocked on Becca's door. "Bec?" he called. He got no response. He turned the handle and cracked the door open. His sister was in bed sleeping. He was surprised she'd actually fallen asleep rather than coming back down to see him. It had been over a year since they'd last seen each other. Not to mention, she had a friend there.
She must have been exhausted. He moved into the room and sat on the edge of the bed. "Becca," he said softly. "Hm?" she said, still mostly asleep. "You need to get up for a few minutes." Becca groaned. "Come on," he said, "There's an officer downstairs who's asking for you."
Becca's blue eyes finally opened and she looked at Matt with a frown. "An officer?" She sat up. "Why?" Matt shrugged. "He said he'd heard you were at the party tonight." Becca just watched him for a moment. "Does he think I did something wrong?" she asked nervously.
There was a good number of townspeople who thought Becca was some kind of creature of the night. Since her arrival in town, the deaths and disappearances had spiked drastically. It was stupid to her. Why wouldn't they think her mom or dad were creatures, too. Though the deaths and disappearances weren't exactly a coincidence, they weren't her fault either.
"I don't think so," Matt said. "I think he's checking on you and the others who were at the party but weren't found..." he slowed down, afraid to make her upset, "among the bodies." Becca looked down and nodded. "Okay." Matt hugged her. "I know I always joke about your disastrous life, but I'm glad you're ok sis."
Becca hugged him back and then he got up and left the room. Becca got out of bed and pulled on a robe. She didn't bother to tie it up, it wasn't that cold in the house, it was more just for a little more cover over her gown. She arrived downstairs right behind Matt who was already moving to sit next to Onyx again.
She'd known her brother her whole life, and she knew that he was sitting there, close to Onyx, protectively. He liked her. Of course. Becca sighed mentally and shook her head the smallest amount. She looked at the officer, who was about eight inches taller than her. Who wasn't taller than her? She was so short. That's why she always wore heels and boots.
"I'm Rebecca Dalton," she said, unsure of what exactly he wanted from her. Her robe had half sleeves and was about the length of her gown which came to just below her knees. She had various scrapes and cuts on her arms, legs and even her chest as well as one or two on her neck and face. They were all minor, thankfully, and would probably be mostly unnoticeable by tomorrow evening.
Randolph nodded at Onyx. “Thank you, ma'am.. First of all, could I get your full name?” As he spoke, he pulled out a notebook and a pen, preparing to write down the information she gave him. Before Onyx could answer, though, a woman with long brown hair came in wearing a nightgown and robe, and introduced herself as Rebecca Dalton.
“I'm sorry to wake you Miss Dalton, but we wanted to make sure you were all right, as people remembered seeing you at the party.”
Randolph took in the many scratches and minor wounds on her arms and legs, and wondered if she had gotten them in the process of fleeing, or from one of the creatures responsible for the slaughter. He was sure there had to have been more than one wolf at least, and given the … man... who had threatened him, he was fairly sure vampires had been involved as well.
“Also, we wanted to get your impressions of what happened, just to make sure we have the full picture.”
He paused. “Do either of you remember seeing anyone at the party that you know hasn't made it home yet? Or even anyone who you don't know if they made it home? I know that the second part is probably a fairly long list, and if you would prefer, you could write that out and bring it to the station tomorrow.
Becca looked at Onyx. There had been vampires at the party. Would they tell that to the police officer? Would he believe them? She looked then at her brother, and then to the officer. "Well," she started, casting one last glance at Onyx. "There were a lot of people there. Some people we didn't recognize from living in town."
She moved to sit in a cushioned lounge chair, drawing her legs up onto the chair beside her. Matt got up and moved into the kitchen, allowing the girls their privacy with the officer. He was still within hearing distance, purposely, but he'd make them some chocolate and pretend to be busy anyway.
Becca continued. "Onyx and I went outside to get fresh air and Alison Lerucce came running out of the forest. She was screaming and she had blood," Becca motioned to her entire body, "all over. And, on her neck." She looked at Onyx again and then the officer.
"When she came onto the porch, she seemed really scared. She'd been crying and she was all dirty like she'd fallen or something, too. She said that, a vampire, did that to her. Onyx and I thought she was joking," she looked at Onyx again and then to the floor. "But I felt her neck. Her blood got on me... the holes were real."
She quickly looked at the officer and spoke again, "She may have been on drugs though, it could have been a prank or a prank gone wrong, too. I- guess." Becca looked at Onyx. They knew the truth, it was just hard to assume that anyone would believe them at all. They wouldn't have believed themselves only a night earlier either.
"But then there was this guy. I've never seen him in town before either. He was maybe six feet tall, with dark hair and black eyes it looked like. But it was dark, I don't know for sure... He was on the roof somehow, and then he was on the porch. I don't know how he did it all so quickly."
"He had blood on his mouth. It was dripping from his chin. Then there was a huge panic and everyone was screaming and running. Onyx and I ran into the woods, but we got split up." Becca was staring at the floor now. She was lost to herself in the story, remembering it detail by detail.
She could feel the burn in her legs from running on heels. She could smell the forest and feel the breeze. The hairs stood up on the back of her neck at the sight of the shadowy thing chasing her deeper and deeper into the woods. "There was something in the woods," she said hollowly.
After another few moments she snapped out of it. "I met a man in the cemetery," she added. "He brought me home and a little while later Onyx showed up. We've been here ever since." She watched him for a minute, writing in his book. "I wasn't drinking," she added, suddenly defensive. "We didn't do any drugs either."
She thought that was important information. Not that it would cause him to believe her any better. After another moment, she asked a question of her own. "Do you really think it was wolves?" she asked.
Matt was standing at the living room entrance where the kitchen and living room joined. He'd heard Bec's story. Earlier he'd heard Onyx's. And they weren't on drugs... Little bits and pieces of their grandparents' stories were floating back to him. Could it be? Could vampires truly exist? Had his sister and Onyx encountered them tonight?
He was suddenly furious. If these creatures existed. If they did this kind of thing to people. They needed to be stopped. They needed to be exterminated. Matt took a breath and waited, listening to the exchanges in the living room. He couldn't go jumping to conclusions after all.
Hearing the officers question, Onyx immediately replied, "Onyx Claire Nguyen, that's my full name." Onyx always hated her name. It's as if her parents were on drugs when naming her. Onyx Claire wasnt exactly a name to proud of exactly. It was weird, difficult, and just plain awkward. Which Onyx was none of these besides difficult.
After a short while, Becca popped up, beginning on the story. Whenever the officer would look to Onyx for confirmation, she would nod her head in agreement to Becca's story. Onyx had a way with words, but Becca always knew how to string them together better.
Finally when Becca finished with the sentence, saying how they weren't drunk or on drugs, Onyx automatically blurted out, "I have a legitimate fear of drugs, and for once, I'm completely sober." This was very true. This was the actual first time that Onyx had gone a night without getting drunk since her twenty-first birthday one year ago.
As Onyx gave Randolph her full name he wrote it down in his notebook. He nodded when Rebecca said that there were people at the party from out of town who were therefore unknown to her. Randolph waited well she sat down and positioned herself, recognizing a delaying tactic, but not commenting on it. What ever had happened had probably been fairly traumatic, especially if she had seen anything of a supernatural nature. He was grateful when the older brother tactfully left the room.
He made a note in his book, that they had been on the porch when Alison Lerucce showed up injured. As she confirmed that there had indeed been vampires among the attackers, he did his best to keep his face completely neutral, wanting to get the full story before he decided what to say. He wondered what she had seen in the woods that she didn't seem to want to elaborate on, and who, exactly had brought her home.
Randolph nodded as both Rebecca and Onyx asserted that they were not drunk or on drugs. He was considering what to tell them when she asked him if he believed the official story. He temporized by saying “That's what my Captain has told me the current theory is.” Looking at the two of them, and knowing that at least some of those responsible for the massacre had not been killed or caught, he could not justify putting them in continued danger by leading them to believe a lie.
He closed his eyes briefly, then opened them and closed his notebook. “What I am about to tell you is completely off the record, and if you tell anyone I said any of it, I will deny it.” He met each girl's eyes in turn to make sure they understood. “I know that you're not crazy. I think the reason wolves are being blamed is that werewolves were preying on the party goers as well as vampires. I would recommend carrying a piece of large silver jewelry with a sharp edge, as both the wolves and vampires are susceptible to it.”
He paused. “I would not recommend, however, trying to convince people that vampires attacked. Most people are unwilling to believe in the supernatural, even when there own senses tell them it is real, so they will chose to believe you are crazy.
He closed his eyes, remembering the rounds of psychologists his parents had insisted he see after his wife and unborn child had been horrifically murdered as part of a witch's ritual. He felt the profound loss, but even stronger was the rage that no one had been willing to believe him, that he had to lie to be left alone so that he could pursue the justice that the system couldn't give him
Becca looked at Onyx when she swore on being sober. She'd noticed that about her friend, and it was strange. Very unlike her. Becca wondered why Onyx hadn't partied like her normal self. She'd have to ask her later.
The officer had closed his book, and Becca was hoping he was done here. She didn't want to relive the night anymore. Not now and not tomorrow, or ever again. For a brief moment she wondered if she'd ever see Aiden again and how he disappeared so quickly without being noticed.
The words 'off the record' brought Becca back to the immediate present. She nodded her understanding as he continued, but stopped suddenly. So they weren't crazy, and it hadn't been a prank gone wrong. And there really had been wolves there. Werewolves.
Vampires and werewolves existed. And what else then!? Becca felt dizzy. They'd been at a party with vampires and werewolves. It was okay, they'd survived. But not everyone was so lucky...
Becca was nodding again. Silver. Okay. She should say something. Ask him if she was on a prank show, or thank him, or tell him to go away, or something. But she couldn't. She couldn't say anything. It was as if the officer's acknowledgement of the situation had slapped her right in the face.
She was shocked. It wasn't as if she hadn't seen the things for herself. But a part of her was hoping there was some other explanation. There wasn't, and it was all soaking in, right now at this exact moment.
Matt came back into the room and said something, but he sounded far away. Becca's ears were ringing. She couldn't be down here anymore. She pushed herself out of the chair and fled the room. No one else even registered in her mind. She took the stairs and rushed into her room, trying to breathe.
She couldn't breathe! She crossed the room and threw the window open again, leaning out of it, taking in huge breaths of the cool night air. She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself.
Downstairs Matt looked at Onyx. "Onyx," he said to get her attention. "Would you mind giving us a minute, and checking on Bec?" He waited until Onyx was up the stairs before turning to the officer. He just watched him for a long moment, somewhat sizing him up.
"How do you know that vampires and werewolves exist?" he asked with his hazel eyes narrowed. "I've heard about you people, the people who live in Farefield. You're all superstitious. Have you even seen real proof of the supernatural? Have you seen one of them with your own eyes?"
It wasn't that Matt refused to believe what had happened. He was just pissed about it. And, if the officer had more information on how to rid the town of these creatures, well, damnit, it was in Matt's blood. He'd take it upon himself to rid the town of them; keep his family safe, and that included Onyx.
Randolph opened his eyes when he heard footsteps. Rebecca appeared to be fleeing. He clenched his fist in frustration, he'd been too damn blunt and only succeeded in frightening the girl. That hadn't been his intention, he'd intended to relieve her of the fear she was going crazy.
As the man, who he presumed was an older brother from his resemblance to Ms. Dalton, sent the other girl off to check on her, he prepared himself to be kicked out of the house for 'playing such a horrible prank' or 'making fun of two scared girls'. He was somewhat surprised when that wasn't exactly what happened. The man's disbelief still angered him, and a part of him worried that the unreasonable anger was related to his new condition.
He did his best not to let the anger show, to keep it under control as he responded. “First of all, I'm not from Farefield. I only moved here a few weeks ago. As for how I know, do you want that chronologically, or are you just interested in tonight?” He didn't give the boy a chance to respond, before continuing. “I know werewolves were involved tonight, because I was attacked by a wolf that ignored being shot by regular bullets, and continued to charge me after receiving what should have been fatal wounds, but fled, badly wounded when I stabbed it with a silver cross. The good part was I had the cross on me, the bad part is that since I hadn't brought silver bullets, the damn thing bit me before I could get away, so I have until the next full moon to find and kill it, or I'll become one of the monsters I've been protecting people from ever since my wife and child were killed by a witch.” His voice became gradually louder as he spoke, until the last part was yelled. He realized he'd said far more then he intended to, and stopped, running a hand through his hair, wincing.
Matt didn't back down, even for an officer of the law. It wasn't until Randolph spoke of being attacked, bitten, and having only until the next full moon to stop his own transformation did Matt's expression soften from one of anger, to one of shock. Then he finished his speech angrily. Informing Matt that his wife and child were killed by a witch.
He just stood there for a moment, in a sort of stupor. "Shit," he finally said, still trying to wrap his mind around everything Randolph had said. Vampires, werewolves, witches... The officer was going to become a, a werewolf then? But he didn't want to, he wanted to stop it.
Randolph had been too loud. If the girls had heard him it might worry them even more. Matt ushered the officer out the front door so that they could stand on the porch in private conversation. He made sure to close the door behind him, and keep his voice low, knowing that Becca always left her window open. If his sister found out he was going to get himself involved in this mess, she'd lose her mind.
Matt just stared at Randolph for a long moment, thinking. "Let me help you," he finally said. "You train me in all things, creepy, and I'll help you find your wolf. I want to get rid of these creatures, these monsters. Innocent people are dying, and my sister could have been one of them."
And Matt wasn't about to take no for an answer. If Randolph refused him, he'd figure it out on his own. But he did have some information of his own... "I believe it, all of it, because generations ago, my family fought vampires. They were trained to kill the monsters off, it was something somewhat bestowed on them."
"It's in my blood," he added, before turning to look out into the night. "I never believed the stories until now." He glanced back at Randolph, ready to listen and do whatever it took. He'd join the force if he had to, or take martial arts classes, train every night of his life under the officer, whatever needed to be done.
