In the Dark
They told him not to go on, but as usual, Szen didn’t listen. He had felt sure that his small but quick structure could get him back to town before nightfall, but as the sun set behind the trees, a shiver escaped him. He had never been out in the forest alone at night. Truthfully, he hadn’t lived around this forest for long; his home had been a rather large city, but after his parents’ death in a fire, he didn’t want to remain, and took the first boat to Grove, a little village on the edge of the forest and accepted the job of a delivery boy. He hadn’t known it would take him through the forest, though. And despite having traveled the road quite a few times already, the villagers seemed particularly adamant about keeping him in town until morning. Fighting the wariness that filled him, though, Szen took off with his delivery, a small box that was actually heavier than it looked. Carrying the box close to his chest, Szen looked around. The shadows had gotten longer, and the wind through the trees wasn’t helping his nerves as they made the shadows jump and shudder all around him, keeping up a constant rustle and rush of leaves and grass. Szen almost felt cold, but it was warm out, not quite halfway through spring. Squinting through the settling evening and darkening of the sky, he found it harder to make out the narrow road through the trees. Stopping for a moment, he stared hard ahead of him, and sighed. He was already too far away from Grove to go back, and despite his better judgment, he wanted to prove he could get to town without coming back in terror. Standing like a statue in the middle of the packed dirt road, he almost didn’t hear the snap of a stick to his left. Looking around, he tried to brush it off as an animal, which wasn’t rare in the forest, but intuition told him it was much larger. When it showed itself, Szen gasped and threw himself back, dropping the box. Red-brown hair, a black shirt, and carrying a dark red bag, the stranger didn’t seem threatening, unless height was taken into account, which it was. But he didn’t act as though he wanted to kill Szen. He acted almost as scared as Szen himself was. His face was kind, a little confused, and when he spoke, his voice was calm: “Relax, kid. I’m not a thief looking for children to kill and rob.” Szen felt his face grow hot. “I’m not a… a kid.” He muttered, retrieving his box and reaching up to straighten his hat. “I…” He sighed. He was always being mistaken as a child, or called a kid, when he was at least sixteen years old. But his small stature and delicate structure said otherwise. He’d even been mistaken as a girl in some situations. He shook his head. “Forget it… Uh, where you headed?” Taken aback by the boy’s straightforward attitude, Milo shook his head. “Town.” He said. “Off ten miles from here.” Szen sighed. “Ten miles.” He hesitated, looking at the ground. “Seems we’re going the same way. Think I can come along too? Name’s Szen, by the way.” Milo smiled a bit. “I don’t see why not.” He said. “I’m Milo.” He added, stepping forward. “C’mon, kid, maybe we’ll get to town by midnight.” Szen held his box close to him, following on. At least, he thought, he wasn’t alone anymore. And Milo seemed to know the place well enough. |
She was on a trip, off someplace she had never heard of, and yet, her parents were excited of the news. A wealthy and well-renowned man had sent her family a letter, stating that he would like her and his son to marry, thus creating an ultimate pool of wealth and business for both families. Chiki sighed, her family was full of greedy people. Being the only daughter of the family, Chiki was sent straight away, her parents sending her in a carriage with the new driver to the faraway district that was unknown to her, yet not to the newbie driving her carriage.*
Her golden eyes scanned the forest beyond the trail they were taking, and she bit her lip, long travels never went by well with her, and she didn't find the destination of this trip to be oh so appealing either. Her mood was crappy, she was getting arranged to a marriage because of money, and she was stuck in a carriage, not even some kind of automobile, he parents refused to subdue to such low ways of transportation, that they use horse drawn carriages to this day. Though, she did admire them for their class. A hand reached out, small and delicate, and was placed on her shoulder. The brown haired girl turned, and saw a small boy, with black spiked hair and the same golden eyes looking up at her. Who said Chiki was alone in the horse drawn carriage? The boy looked at her worriedly, "Big sis, are you okay? You seem really mad..." Chiki looked at him tensely, before she relaxed and placed a hand on the boys head, "Don't worry about it Peter, I'm just thinking about something..." Peter's expression of concern quickly changed into a skeptical one, but still replied with an, "Okay.." Chiki smiled at her brother, even with him being merely 15, and she herself being only 19, she was to get married as soon as possible. As soon as she went to look back out the window, she saw a black figure quickly run past the carriage, and it suddenly stopped. Peter was panicking already, while Chiki went through her bag and pulled out a shiny revolver and a decent sized blade out of it's sheath. She was clueless on how to use the gun, the the blade was no stranger to the brunette. Handing the gun to Peter, seeing that he was the one taking the hunting lessons, she faced the right door, while Peter took his place at the left door. After a few minutes of silence, the right door opened, and Chiki took no chance and let out a war cry, and tackled the culprit to the ground,"EAT BLOODY METAL YOU DEMON!"* "Hey, HEY! WE'RE ON THE SAME SIDE!" Chiki looked down, and sure enough, it was the driver, William. Gray eyes and pale orange hair hiding under a brown cap as he laid on the floor, glaring up at the girl who was about to stab him to death. She stood up, and checked herself, no rips on her sweater, and none to be seen on her skirt, or the tights she was wearing under them, and her rain boots seemed to be okay, save some dirt. "William, why did you stop the carriage? You know that's a stupid move." William gave her a look,"It's not my fault! The horses thought they saw something, and they got scared!" Chiki thought back to the black figure, what could that be? She dismissed the thought,"Well, you just damaged the wheel, so we'll have to take the horses by themselves. Thanks a lot you idiot." "But it's not my fault!" "Peter, you're riding with me." "Yes big sis!" "Hey! Don't ignore me!" [[;-; Is this fine? I think it's a bit short -3-]] |
