When the body dies, it rots. Then the soul is released to Purgatory, where you relive your life in a world of gray. When you've found out the purpose that your life was supposed to have (however long that takes), you get 'reborn'. Until you discover you're purpose, you get to remain in purgatory.
Actually this was a dream I had once. Before then, I believed in nothing, and that depressed me. I couldn't handle the bleakness of nothingness. So when I had this dream, my brain just wouldn't let go of it. It was my personal savior from suicide....
But thats just what I believe.
