Are You Challenging Me?

Kate sat in the back of the classroom, almost dozing off. She was supposed to be doing homework, but sleeping and reading manga was much more interesting. She was really surprised the other kids hadn't caught on to the greatness of it.

Not like she hadn't finished her work ages ago. The plus to being a genius kid- much more time to slack off and do whatever the hell she wanted.

The teacher was making her rounds, seeing what everyone was doing and helping out the kids that needed it. Kate glanced around and smirked. As if she would ever need that teacher's help. She kind of questioned where the woman had even gotten her degree- most of the information she passed off to her students as "fact" was either biased drivel or entire fiction.

And this was a problem as an English teacher. You had to at least have some grasp of the English language and how it works. Ms. Caram obviously had no clue. She made basic grammatical errors in almost every single sentence.

And of course, Kate noted every occurrence. Not that she said anything- that was just plain stupid, something she was not.

Ms. Caram reached her row, and was visibly displeased at what Kate thought to do with her class time. "Why aren't you doing your work?"

"Because I finished it in the first five minutes of class." This was common behavior for the two. Ms. Caram seemed to loath Kate. The most likely culprit was the fact that Kate was smarter than her, and probably felt threatened. "See for yourself." She pulled the creative writing assignment out from under her manga and held it aloft for Ms. Caram to see.

The peeved teacher snatched the paper from Kate's hands and pored over it quickly. "You didn't write about what I told you to write about."

"But I thought the topic was love?" Kate stated nonchalantly.

"Are you challenging me?" The teacher exploded, fire practically whipping from the corners of her eyes.

"Yes, actually," replied Kate, perfectly calm in the face of the tyrant. "You told us to write about love. You didn't define which type of love, so I assumed I could write about any type I chose. I chose to write about the love between a girl and her pet. Is that wrong?"

"Well... um..." Ms. Caram blustered for a minute, then turned around and stalked back to her desk. "Attention, class." she screeched when she was seated. "Thanks to your classmate being super kind, you will all be writing an extra assignment tonight. I would like you each to write a two-page essay about why it is better to not talk back to the people in charge of you!"

Kate smirked again. Another chance to teach her where she's wrong, she plotted.

Pulling out a new sheet of paper, she began to write.

"It is best not to talk back to your elders because then you can't challenge the rules that are unfair and clearly favor some students over others. In this way nothing gets changed, and regulations can be passed that further limit the rights of these students. This makes it extremely hard for anything in our school society to progress....

A slow grin spread across Kate's face as she continued writing.
