The merman cut his song short when she shifted a bit closer and began speaking to him. He couldn't hear her properly. All he heard were muffled sounds, because of the reinforced glass and the fact that his tank was sealed up. He did understand English, so he would be able to understand her if he could hear her...but the material the tank was crafted out of was making that impossible.
Instead of responding--which he really couldn't, since he hadn't heard her--he raised his upper lip up over his teeth. It was a blatant threat, and a warning to back up and give him space.
