Nikholas' smile brightened a bit as his transfar was mentioned. The possibility of transfer was a shock to him as well, actually remembering te news vividly. His father worked within the ministry, and had somehow, much to Nikholas' great disbelief, found a way to transfer his son to Hogwarts. "I didn't think so either... but, hey, somehow it worked out." He'd then shrug, unsure of how to further explain it, not knowing himself, really. His father had handled it all. The shock at the mention of his house he had seen multiple times before, in his cousin, his parents, his old friends at Durmstrang even- it was surely an error, and it was an embarrassing one. The coldness that followed in Karen's expression frightened him a bit, but he showed no outward signs of it, merely shifting awkwardly in his seat until the coldness left. That was a relief. After relaxing again, Nikholas laughed with the two girls, glad that they didn't seem to mind, smiling at the responses that brought on. After they spoke, he flashed them a smile, now more on the warm side as opposed to the shy, polite one he had earlier shown. He let out another small laugh at Ginny's joke, answering after the laughter stopped. "I'm sure it was a mistake, but that was the most insistant hat I've ever met..." Then, going back to the mention of his housemates' nastiness, "I was afraid of that. As for being shunned- that's alright. I didn't think I'd get along with them anyways." And Nikholas really did seem not to care. His family consisted of mostly Gryfindors, anyways, he didn't think he could find it in himself to accept his house being Slytherin.

Nikholas nodded to show understanding as he was told their years, his smile coming back immediately. His cousin was a second year, explaining why she was friends with neither of them. However, he was a fifth year, meaning there was a chance he now knew someone that might be in his classes. "I'm in my fifth year as well." Then, after noticing something that may be confusion. he went on to explain, "Durmstrang also has a system similar to the years Hogwarts has, so that's how it worked out." When a pause in conversation came, his gaze went to the compartment across the way, glancing over at his sister and his friends. There was much giggling coming from that direction, muffled voices mingling in the air, clearly telling him that that compartment would have been too loud for him. His gaze then went to the window, noticing the time, wondering if they were nearing their destination yet.
