I think this is about the things unknown. Things we once heald greater than ourselves ages past, now returning to bring their revenge on the world. The children are sybolic of the innocence of ones who know nothing of these old gods, but in thier pure souls, can sense the return of these ominous beings. As for the mention of water...The least explored part of out planet is the depths of the ocean, and I suppose if these beings are actual, tangible creatures, that would be the only place on the planet they could have slept for all these millenia.

All once began in darkness
from the womb we came
naugt but warmth and dark
Eyes closed
and def to all but the beating of our mother's heart.

Within the shadows
we remember the dark
the place none can return
forever expelled
from the only dark we have never feared

But it is the final dark
my true heart longs for
cloaked in my own darkness
and fear
I dream of the eternal dark awaiting me
