Ships often avoided this little patch of ocean. For one it was rocky...the air was usually frigid and dropped below zero degrees at night, so ice coated the top of the water, as well. Storms wracked the area and made it nearly impassible at times.
But these reasons were not the main reasons why ships avoided the area.
The entire area was a massive ship graveyard, full of sunken and battle-downed ships. In the shallower areas parts of old ships could be seen sticking out from underneath the water. The going was treacherous, especially for bigger boats that could get caught on sunken ships underwater and end up sinking their whole ship. Due to the sheer amount of ships that appeared to have sunken here, the area was deemed cursed by many superstitious individuals...
Nowadays the only boats that dared to wander near this deathtrap were pirate vessels in search of old and valuable treasures from times gone past. And there were treasures for those who looked closely enough and accepted the challenge of overcoming the graveyard--large chests full of old, mint condition coins...golden goblets...silver platters...as well as many other goodies. The challenge, though, was navigating painstakingly through the graveyard without damaging the ship...with so much debris it was nearly impossible.
...Especially with the added threat of what was lurking in the water...
