Use some room spray like Febreeze or something like that? Maybe use thin chicken wire or something to keep the fish from jumping, or a mesh screen -- can get those at any home improvement store.

I have to clean out my cat's litter box as soon as my kitty goes in there, otherwise the entire house will stink like the box.
