This boy will definitely be a pain in the ass, but he much rather have this child around than to continue living alone. He cant leave him alone either way, he'll stop aging around his twenties and it'd be bad if he ends up in a lab. Either way their kind is almost extinct, or in good hiding that he has no knowledge of. In the end, he wants the boy to stick around.
